About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Resuscitation of an Austin Ghost Bike, Part 1

A Dude Abikes | adudeabikes.com

Two years ago almost at this time, a woman tragically was killed by a hit and run driver. He was never caught. Her mistake was having her bike trailer break down in the middle of the night and trying to fix it in the bike lane. She was a woman named Merry Daye who lived on the streets of Austin, Texas. Thousands of others still are without housing, thanks to the unaffordable rent and other reasons that cause this situation for so many worldwide. After her death, I organized a ghost bike and memorial ride. Her family came and spoke, and the TV news covered it. Recently, someone liberated the bike from the tree by the church. I live nearby and noticed. So this bike is back in the story of my bicycle journey, and with it, Merry. Merry Daye

When I saw the bike was missing, I stopped to …

Trek / BSS Guadalupe closing

TAF | austinmountainbiking.com

Housed in the former Ozone location, this little service-only shop was a real savior for many of us in the Midtown neighborhoods. Sadly, they are closing the doors tomorrow, leaving us with the option of Cycle Progression (er, no) or driving either south of the river or up to Research. "REMINDER: we’re closing Sunday, December 5 We’re closing our Guadalupe location this Sunday and joining forces with our friends at Trek Bicycle Lamar, where you’ll enjoy the same service, products, and friendly faces you’ve come to love at Guadalupe, just 10 minutes down the road. See you there!" …

Racking Up Local Legends After Fog Lifts

Texbiker.net Posted on December 4, 2021 by Rick AnkrumDecember 4, 2021

It took longer than I expected for the fog to lift delaying the start of today’s bike ride until 11:22 AM. I planned on riding my “Atascocita – FM 2100 – Walden” route but when I made the turn onto Fairlake Lane traffic was backed beyond the S-curve. When I reached FM 2100 I decided to ride north on FM 2100 to avoid the possible traffic on Fairlake Lane. This time I didn’t stay on the unopened south bound lanes all the way to the railroad crossing. At the opening across from Lake Houston United Methodist church I cut over to the sidewalk on the east side. This doesn’t go all the way to the railroad track but I moved to the main lane when the traffic was gone. This is better than trying to merge at the railroad crossing.

On the return west on FM 1960 from Huffman all of the traffic on Fairlake Lane was gone. I could’ve stuck with my planned route.

I finished the ride at 1:52 PM biking 32.21 miles. This sets up the potential for a 200 mile week with 190.82 miles so far. This was the 13th ride on the “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden” route in 2021.

Last night I cleaned the chain lube from the Canyon Endurace bike’s chain, cassette, rear derailleur, and crank because I was tired of the mess. I then waxed the chain to get back to a cleaner setup. I wanted to get it done before today’s bike ride. The Canyon was my bike for today’s ride.

There were other cyclists along the route. I didn’t expect to see any due to my late start though. The first group was on Kings River Drive near W. Lake Houston Parkway. The second group was headed west over Lake Houston while I rode east. I almost missed seeing them because I was keeping my head down and eyes on the road thinking.

When I started getting dressed for the ride the temperature was about 70 and it took me a minute or so to decide on what to wear. Finally I chose shorts, a long sleeve jersey, and a short sleeve jersey. It turned out to be a good choice. I was comfortable most of the ride. Weather conditions: start 75 (humidity 89%, dew point 71), mostly cloudy, wind N 0 mph; finish 78 (humidity 78%, dew point 71), mostly cloudy, wind variable 6 mph. The dew point being so close to the temperature caused the fog tp hang around so long. It was muggy.

Strava gave me 3 local legends. I thought I might get one of them.

  • Local Legend on Havenbrook sprint

Northeast Texas Trail Coalition awarded $7.5 million in grants to fully develop 27 miles of NE Texas Trail

myparistexas.com

The Northeast Texas Trail Coalition is very pleased to announce that four TxDOT grants totaling nearly $7.5 million were recently awarded to fully develop over 27 miles of the east half of the NETT.

These federal funding dollars were earmarked specifically for Transportation Alternatives projects such as sidewalks, shared-use paths, bike lanes, pedestrian bridges, and other features that enhance bicycle and pedestrian safety for all ages and abilities.

These grants are incredibly helpful toward realizing the NorthEast Texas Trail Coalition’s ambitious goal of becoming a Texas Parks and Wildlife State Linear Park. Once completed, the NETT will be the 4th longest trail in the United States and the longest trail in Texas.

The projects are as follows: …

City of Austin begins design of urban trail on abandoned rail corridor

By Benton Graham | communityimpact.com

The city of Austin’s Urban Trails Program has begun design on an urban trail that would run through the Bergstrom Spur Corridor, according to a Dec. 1 press release.

The trail stretches about 6.5 miles from Vinson Drive in South Austin to East Riverside Drive and US 183 in southeast Austin, near the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.

The project had been identified as an important link along the city’s pedestrian, bicycle and transit networks in 2017 by the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization and in the 2019 Austin Strategic Mobility Plan.

“Planning projects like the Bergstrom Spur Corridor study help turn aspirations into …

New Asphalt At Spring Creek Greenway. Mike’s New Bike Day

Texbiker.net Posted on December 3, 2021 by Rick AnkrumDecember 3, 2021

I managed to start today’s bike a little earlier than yesterday with the Lynskey R300 wheels down and rolling at 12:17 PM. Weather conditions were similar to yesterday with 76 degrees, mostly cloudy and a light SE 8 mph wind. There wasn’t much change when I finished at 2:37 PM except the cloud cover thickened. I rode to Jesse Jones Park on the Spring Creek Greenway, circling the parking lot area by the trailhead to go to Carter Park and beyond. In the parking lot I saw new asphalt and rode on it to see where it went. The signs give me the impression the trails are for walking not biking. Some of the branches included boardwalks. The video shows some of the new trails. I did not ride on the greenway in November. There was a notice at the entrance to the greenway to Carter Park that the trail would be closed at the 8 mile to 8.5 mile sections starting December 29th to January 20th. Those are estimated dates.

This was the 4th bike ride this year on this section of the greenway. I added some miles to the end of the ride going to HEB to pickup an item. This pushed the distance to 28.21 versus around 24 miles on the other rides. My week now totals 158.61 miles, not too far from a 200 mile week if I bike Saturday and Sunday. I don’t think I’ve done a 200 mile week in December before.

One of my YouTube channel subscribers got his new Lynskey R300 bike yesterday. He sent me some photos. I hope he was able to ride today. New Bike Day!! There are at least 2 Lynskey R300 bikes in Texas. Mike’s has fancy Ultegra DI2 electronic shifting and etched graphics.

I lost the local legend on one Strava segment but notched some personal records on the ride.
