About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

2021-11-12: Coldspring to Silsbee

Friday November 12, 2021, 82 miles (132 km) – Total so far: 1,956 miles (3,148 km) I didn’t intend on riding this much but I made a wrong turn leaving Coldspring. It must be at least two miles before I realized I was on the wrong way and turned back. Another 3-4 miles were added because the hotel didn’t enter the right address. Instead of business 96, I was sent to highway 96. Apparently many people went to the wrong location.

I was bitten by fire ants. This painful experience happened because I was investigating something hit my fender and accidentally I stepped on its mound. I did get bitten before so I took it seriously. …

Dallas Is Using $2 Million to Update the City’s Biking Infrastructure

Jacob Vaughn | www.dallasobserver.com

For the first time in a decade, Dallas is updating its bike plan.

The 2022 budget allocates $2 million for Dallas’ bike lane program. Some of that money will go toward filling “critical gaps” in the city’s 2011 bike plan. The city is also trying extend the bike network’s reach and connect it to more destinations. With the update, Dallas’ leaders want to figure out where biking infrastructure is needed and reconsider current routes.

Dallas has several projects lined up to …

Souther Tier, San Diego to St Augustine

2021-11-11: Navasota to Coldspring

Thursday November 11, 2021, 67 miles (108 km) – Total so far: 1,874 miles (3,016 km) It was pouring in the morning but was cleared before sun came out. My ride today was quite enjoyable after I got away from the city. But I got a big nail into the tire 5 miles into the ride. Fixing it is easier because the culprit was located easily.

$7.4 Million For Improvements to BIke/Hiking Trails in Bowie & Red River Counties

Lisa Lindsey | kkyr.com

Well, how awesome is this? Improvements have been approved for the longest hiking, bicycle and horseback riding trail in Texas that extends into Bowie and Red River Counties.

It all stems from TxDot as they approved over $7.4 million for the projects that will make improvements to over a 27-mile area of the Northeast Texas Trail System (NETT). …

Remember When Austin’s Hike-and-Bike Trail Didn’t Have Enough Trees?

James Rambin | austin.towers.net

Lady Bird Johnson on the Shoal Creek Peninsula in the 1970s — this area has grown so much it’s actually impossible to get this view from this perspective now, and we don’t mean the skyline. Image: The Trail Foundation

If you’re an Austin old-timer, what we’re about to tell you sounds insultingly simple — but did you know the city’s famously lush Hike-and-Bike Trail wasn’t always so green? If you’re one of the many people that moved here yesterday, you’d have no idea that much of the current tree cover shading many sections of the trail, particularly in the downtown area, is technically artificial in its placement — the majority planted no earlier than the 1970s by the Town Lake Beautification Committee and famously …

Inflation, supply issues hitting small businesses in San Antonio

Jessie Degollado | www.ksat.com

Some businesses were better prepared than others, expert says SAN ANTONIO – Anyone who has bought almost anything these days already knew what the Consumer Price Index was last month, a jump of 6.2%, the largest increase in 30 years.

Economists blame soaring fuel prices and the seemingly endless supply chain issues.

Not only are consumers paying the price, so are small businesses.

Clay Williams, owner of the San Antonio Bike Shop, has been impacted to the point he’s decided to close the shop sometime next month.

“I wanted to be an old man running a bike shop,” Williams said. “It’s really emotional and it hurts that I have to close it.”

But with a family to support and taking care of his elderly parents, Williams said he had to make the most …

2021-11-10: La Grange to Navasota

Wednesday November 10, 2021, 69 miles (111 km) – Total so far: 1,807 miles (2,908 km) During my exploration of La Grange, I found a donut shop right next to the motel. It opens at 5 am. So I had to have breakfast there. They served kolaches. And it was owned by a Cambodian. Just like the donut shop in Kerrville. Coincedence?

I was passing thru Independence during lunch time. From the ACA map There should be a convenient store. Them I saw many trucks all congregate in one spot and I found the store. They served lunch and was quite good. …

EF won’t fire Craddock for riding the wrong bike either

by Dane Cash | cyclingtips.com

EF Education-Nippo has come to ‘an amicable agreement’ with another outgoing rider who recently rode on non-sponsor-correct equipment.

Only a few days after news emerged that Sergio Higuita had received a termination notice – and had then come to an arrangement with the team – after being seen on a Specialized bike instead of a Cannondale at an event in Colombia, Cyclingnews reported that Lawson Craddock posted photos of himself riding a Giant bike at an event in Texas. He has since deleted the photos from social media.

2021-11-09: Smithville to La Grange

Tuesday November 9, 2021, 29 miles (47 km) – Total so far: 1,738 miles (2,797 km) I will have a short ride to La Grange so I started later than usual. It was cloudy but pleasant temperature. I can feel higher humidity but not unbearable.

I rode into La Grange about noon time. Met a local guy in DQ, who told me about a two day ride from Austin to Houston with La Grange as the mid point. Had the afternoon to explore the historic downtown area. There are plaques talking about local history. It’s very educational especially for local people but today is Tuesday and most people are here for the business. …
