About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Disc Brake Fiddling, Upcoming Road Closure, Unusual Weather

Texbiker.net Posted on August 5, 2021 by Rick AnkrumAugust 5, 2021

Another bike ride start at 10:24 AM for the third day in a row. Stage 3 of the Vuelta a Burgos finish kept me from starting earlier. I chose a route to the south and east to ride on my Canyon Endurace bike. Before starting I fiddled with the rear disc brake using a business card to adjust the spacing of the disc to the caliper. I don’t know if it made much difference. I think the chain needs waxed to quiet it and then I can listen for the brake rubbing. I thought I rode today’s route (Atascocita South – Walden – Huffman) more than the previous 3 times but maybe I combined the similar “Atascocita South – Walden – FM 2100” route. I biked 35.47 miles getting me in good position for a 200 mile week with 154.45 miles so far.

YTD Combined Bike Rides on Atascocita - Walden routes
YTD Combined Bike Rides on Atascocita – Walden routes

Combining the two similar routes I biked them 7 times in 2021. Today’s mileage kept YTD 2021 11 miles in front of YTD 2020.

Unusual August weather for today’s bike ride. The temperature stayed the same at the 1:10 PM finish as the start. To compliment that the humidity and dew points went down between the start and finish. This made it feel cooler but near the end I looked at the blue arm sleeves and saw streaks of salt from sweating. Weather conditions: start 86 (54% humidity, 67.2 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind E 12 mph; finish 86 (49% humidity, 64.9 dew point), overcast, wind SE 5 mph. The strong headwind didn’t stay strong when I turned to the west hoping for the tailwind version.

At FM 2100 a big flashing signed alerted drivers that on August 6th at 6 PM until August 9th at 5 AM Old Atascocita Road would be closed at FM 2100. I think the closure is for pouring concrete. The high weeds covering the sidewalk along northbound FM 2100 met the mower. The mower left some but it was much better. My Saturday ride will stop at FM 2100. I wonder how the other bikers will handle this, especially coming from the east on Old Atascocita Road.

While waiting for the traffic light to change at FM 1960 and FM 2100 I chatted with two men collecting donations. One of them I met before and the other was new to me. Their group does that each Thursday.

Houston cyclists ride 100 miles, raise $200K for Chai Lifeline

By MATT SAMUELS | jhvonline.com

A group of Texas cyclists traveled to New Jersey last week to ride in the one-day, 100-mile Bike4Chai to benefit Jewish children who suffer from long-term illness or disabilities.

The group of mostly Houston riders raised $200,000 for Chai Lifeline, the international children’s health support network that provides social, practical and financial assistance to more than 5,000 children and their families.

Houston team captains, Yitzi Abramovitz and Andrew Serotta, led …

San Marcos, Hays County break ground on I-35 at SH 123 project

Author: Dinah Chukwu | www.kvue.com

HAYS COUNTY, Texas — Construction has officially begun on the Interstate 35 at State Highway 123 project.

On Wednesday, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) was joined by officials from the City of San Marcos, Hays County and the Capital Metropolitan Planning Organization to break ground on the project.

“San Marcos is one of the fastest growing areas in our region, with more than 155,000 vehicles traveling this segment of I-35 daily,” said TxDOT Austin District Engineer Tucker Ferguson. “The I-35 at SH 123 project is another example of how TxDOT is focused on enhancing mobility in a smart way forward for our growing communities and what better place to do that than in San Marcos.” …

… San Marcos Mayor Jane Hughson said the new changes – like elevating part of the frontage road – help address flooding issues in the area. The project will also add extended entrance and exit lanes and enhance bicycle and pedestrian paths throughout the corridor. …

Head Scratching A New Route Road Combination

Texbiker.net Posted on August 4, 2021 by Rick AnkrumAugust 4, 2021

In the quest for route variety I put my thinking cap on and came up with today’s route. It consists of roads I ride but in a different combination and direction. I had to come up with a new route name, “Porter – Woodbranch – Valley Ranch”. It goes north to Woodbranch Village, loops through Woodbranch to Roman forest Blvd. and back to I-69/US59 to return to Kingwood. After the conclusion of stage 2 of the Vuelta a Burgos on Flobike I started the bike ride at 10:24 AM. Today I rode my Lynskey R300 bike. I wasn’t sure how long the route would be but guessed 35 miles. It turned out to be 36.56 miles. This advanced the week to 118.98 miles, setting up a possible 200 mile week. August miles now total 138.29, about 17% of the way to my 800 mile goal. 2021 YTD still leads 2020 YTD by 11 miles. 2021 YTD is 5,926 miles. The bike ride finished at 1:33 PM.

No rain on today’s bike ride. I don’t miss that. The temperature remained in the 80’s while I biked. Cloud cover kept the sun from full power. Weather conditions: start 84 (74% humidity, 75.1 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind NE 10 mph; finish 87 (63% humidity, 73 dew point), overcast, wind NE 9 mph. The headwind was strong enough on the way to Woodbranch to require extra pedaling effort. I enjoyed the corresponding tailwind on the way back to Kingwood.

Since installing the Robert Axle Project Lightning thru axles on my Lynskey R300 I noticed how quietly it is while riding. Before the disc brakes rubbed and now they don’t. I haven’t changed anything other than the new axles.

On Valley Ranch Parkway at SH 99 (Grand Parkway) these bright flowers caught my eye. After taking the photos I took a short break under the overpass in the shade. The breeze felt great and I could’ve sat longer after eating the granola bar left from yesterday’s bike ride.

Another Strava result for a Local Legend on KPHS Sprint. I rarely see anyone biking on this segment but when I looked at the details at least 10 other bikers rode there.

Video: Denison approves ban on motorized vehicles on city trails

By Mike Rogers | www.kxii.com

DENISON, Texas (KXII) – The Denison City Council unanimously approved a ban on riding motorized vehicles on city trail grounds at Monday night’s meeting.

The amendment also bans riding any kind of animal on city park grounds.

But you’re still allowed to ride them on city roads and city park parking lots.

Steffi Prado is from Denison and was riding the trails at Waterloo Park on a mountain bike Monday night. She said the ban was a smart move.

“It’s really dangerous. You’re going at high speeds and …

Close the Gap in senior care; Cleburne among CEO’s cycle for awareness

By Matt Smith | www.cleburnetimesreview.com

Cleburne’s temps last week, while uncomfortable, were thankfully well short of 116 degrees.

Such was not the case for Caring Senior Service founder and CEO Jeff Salter just a few days earlier.

“The rain and cold earlier on weren’t so bad,” Salter said. “The heat’s been much worse. I was riding about 30 miles outside of Phoenix when I had two flats on the trailer. You can imagine being on the side of the highway where the sun’s been beating down all day and it’s already 105 but on that road it feels like a lot more.

“I kept drinking as much water as I could. But, expending the …

The Cove House Classic Bike Tour will return to Copperas Cove on Saturday, August 14, bright and early at 7 a.m.

The inaugural ride consisted of only 27 riders and has grown in attendance over the years, with nearly 130 registered cyclists converging on the City of Five Hills in 2019.

Many of the riders who come to the Cove House Classic Bike Tour are preparing for the Hotter’n Hell Hundred event in Wichita Falls, which will celebrate its 40th anniversary the final week of August 2021. The Cove House Classic Bike Tour acts as a warmup for …

Lilian Velez, of Houston, joined forces with a non-profit organization called Texas 4000 and is biking cross country to raise awareness and money to fight cancer.

HOUSTON – A young woman from Houston is on the ride of her life across the country, biking to raise awareness and money to fight cancer. She joined forces with a non-profit organization called Texas 4000, in hopes of sparing others from what she went through as a teenager.

Lilian Velez is getting unique views of the U.S., from the seat of her bike, on the longest annual charity bicycle ride in the world. It’s usually from Austin to Alaska, but the Canadian border is closed due to COVID-19, so they’re taking a new route.
