On a sun-kissed morning, I embarked on a two-wheeled journey that wove through the picturesque neighborhoods of Kingwood, Texas. My trusty Canyon Endurace CF 7 (actually I rode my Cervelo Caledonia) bike carried me along a route that blended suburban charm with natural beauty.
Starting from Kingwood, I pedaled southward, passing through Woodridge Forest—a neighborhood adorned with lush greenery and neatly manicured lawns. The scent of blooming flowers lingered in the air as I glided along the streets, the morning sun casting long shadows on the pavement.
Next, I veered onto the Brooklyn Trails, where the path (no path streets only) meandered through wooded areas (no trees). Tall trees stood sentinel, their leaves rustling in the gentle breeze. The trail led me northward, and soon I found myself on Community Drive, where friendly waves from fellow cyclists and joggers greeted me.
As I continued, the landscape transformed. Valley Ranch unfolded before me—a community nestled amidst rolling hills (no hills here). The road widened, and I followed FM1314, heading northwest. The distant outline of the San Jacinto River framed my view (the river was not anywhere near me), and I marveled at the serene beauty of the Texas countryside.
Cumberland Boulevard beckoned, and I pedaled onward. The entrance to The Highlands—a gated enclave—appeared like a hidden gem (not a gated community as far as I could tell). I paused briefly, admiring the elegant architecture and well-tended gardens (only construction equipment at the entrance). Then, retracing my path, I rejoined FM1314, the wind whispering encouragement as I rode.
Oakhurst awaited—a neighborhood known for its friendly atmosphere and tree-lined streets. The rhythmic click of my pedals accompanied me as I explored its nooks and crannies. Finally, I completed the loop, returning to Kingwood—the place where my cycling adventures always begin and end.
As I dismounted, sweat-slicked and exhilarated, I reflected on the diverse landscapes, the camaraderie of fellow riders, and the simple joy of exploring my own backyard on two wheels. With each turn of the crank, I had not only covered miles but also woven memories into the fabric of my cycling journey.
I did take these photos in Valley Ranch at Elk Haven. The orange flowers caught my attention.

FORT WORTH — The Fort Worth community is mourning the death of a man, killed in a hit-and-run crash while riding his bike.
The incident happened in East Fort Worth near Gateway Park over the weekend off East First Street. The family said Dan Frost rode his bike down the same path nearly every day and said they were making Mother’s Day plans when they found out he died.
“One of my dad’s sayings was he felt ‘closest to God when he was on that bike.’ It breaks our heart, but I’ve been comforting my mom and my sisters by telling them that he went from feeling as close to God as he ever felt in life when he died,” said Dan Frost’s eldest son, Garrison. …

I rode south and east to Spanish Cove Drive but not on all of the usual streets on the Atascocita – Walden – Spanish Cove Drive route. Waiting until stage 10 of the Giro d’Italia finished pushed the start time to 11:22 AM. That was time enough for the temperature to get out of the 60’s to mid 70’s. My Canyon Endurace CF 7 bike carried me over the different streets. In Huffman the Amtrak Sunset Limited train and I arrived at the same time. I biked 36.74 miles, about average for the previous 10 bike rides this year. I am now ahead of the 25 miles per day average to reach my May goal of 749 miles with 360.7 miles (48% of the goal).

AUSTIN—Active transportation is an important link in the Texas transportation system connecting travelers across the state. TxDOT is developing the Statewide Active Transportation Plan to develop recommendations for improving conditions for bicycling, walking and rolling across the state.
Safe active transportation networks not only connect people to destinations, but can also improve individual health, enhance local economies and provide choices that can save people money and improve their quality of life.
The SATP focuses on community needs to identify priority areas and make connections with trails, paths, and transit to help provide safe and efficient ways to get around for people using all transportation choices. Specific strategies identified through the plan will inform TxDOT’s efforts to support travel options in the future.
In the fall of 2023, TxDOT held virtual meetings and traveled across the state to meet with and gather input from more than 4,800 people, stakeholders and other groups to shape the SATP. Through this outreach, people were encouraged to provide input on their top priorities when it comes to active transportation. Common themes included:
Increased safety. Almost 75% of those surveyed don’t feel safe using active transportation. They want to see lower speed limits and additional lighting on sidewalks and bike lanes. ...
