About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Sweltering Bike Ride To Calm Cool Sikes Lake

Durango Texas | durangotexas.blogspot.com

My bike took me north on the Circle Trail this morning, before it got too HOT to be fun to do such a thing.

Long before noon I stopped for a shady moment under a Sikes Lake gazebo, where I checked my phone to see the temperature was 90, with the humidity making it really feel like 93.

As you can see via the ripple-less water on the lake the air is …

Lost Local Legend On Atascocita South – Walden – FM 2100 Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 16, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJune 16, 2021

Last night a surprisingly strong storm moved through the Kingwood area. I lost electricity for a couple of hours. This morning the temperature cooled several degrees from what it has been. When I began today’s bike ride at 9:43 AM it felt cooler but I knew it wouldn’t last through the afternoon. Riding my Canyon Endurace CF SLX bike I headed south and east on what I label the “Atascocita South – Walden – FM 2100” route. This was the 3rd time on this route in 2021, twice on my Canyon and once on my Lynskey R300. With the rain I didn’t ride north on the FM 2100 sidewalk because of the several low places where water stands.

Today’s bike ride was longer than the previous two on this route coming in at 35.38 miles. I altered the way through Kingwood swinging through Woodridge Forest before turning south. My week now totals 104.39 miles and June 521.04 miles. Getting closer to my 800 mile goal for June. Based on a daily average of 26.67 miles after 16 days I would be at 426.67 miles so I am almost 100 miles ahead of that pace. I lost ground to YTD 2020 with 2021 now trailing by 145 miles. Last year on June 16th I biked a longer route going 41.8 miles.

Weather Conditions at the start and finish today.

While I biking Strava sent me a notice that “You just lost the title of Local Legend on Kings View U. Mark Crosno’s 34 efforts set the new bar for the most attempts completed on that segment in the past 90 days.” This segment was on today’s route and I received the email about the time I was on the segment.

Developers of huge McKinney community plan miles of trails to draw homebuyers

By Bill Hethcock | www.bizjournals.com/dallas

Oxland Advisors, the Dallas-based developers of the huge Painted Tree residential community in McKinney, is banking on the desire of homebuyers to take a hike. Or a bike ride. Or a run.

Some 69 percent of potential homebuyers in Dallas-Fort Worth and 54 percent nationwide rank walking and bike trails as the most desired outdoor amenity in a residential community, according to survey data collected by housing research firm Zonda.

Oxland Advisors is taking those statistics to heart with plans for 25 miles of looped paths and trails and outdoor-centric amenities in the development, plus pools and playgrounds.

Oxland brought in national trail design-build experts …

Avoiding Some Heat, Update On Soft Tire, Out & Back to Tavola

Texbiker.net Posted on June 15, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJune 15, 2021

With no live bike racing I decided to start today’s bike ride a little earlier than yesterday’s ride. I rolled out of the driveway at 9:29 AM on my Canyon Endurace CF SLX bike to bike my “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route. When I finished at 12:14 PM that marked the 8th time using this route in 2021 (5 on my Canyon and 3 on my Lynskey).

6-15-2021 Bike Ride Canyon Endurace
My Canyon Endurace at the finish of the bike ride

Today’s bike ride covered 35.37 miles increasing my week’s total to 69.01 miles and June to 485.67 miles. The Canyon has registered 22,546 miles since I bought it in 2018. YTD miles in 2021 compared to 2020 trails last year by 139 miles, a slight increase from yesterday.

Heat continues to dominate the weather scene which is one reason I started early. Weather for today’s bike ride: start 88 (69% humidity, 76.4 dew point), a few clouds, wind N 4 mph; finish 91 (59% humidity, 74.5 dew point), partly cloudy, wind N 5 mph. The humidity dropped helping to offset the lack of wind movement.

Yesterday I wrote about my other bike, the Lynskey R300, having a soft rear tire before the ride, pumping up the tire before the ride and finishing the ride with no problems. After the ride I looked at the rear tire and found this wire sticking in the tire. I don’t remember seeing it before the ride.

6-15-2021 Lynskey Rear Tire Flat Tire Cause

When I removed the tube the wire penetrated another patch. I tried removing the old patch but it was glued firmly and wouldn’t peel off. Not wanting to put a patch on a patch I put a new tube in. Checking today the rear tire is firm.
