About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Bike Riding With The Fishing Lady Of Sikes Lake

Durango Texas | durangotexas.blogspot.com

The weather has been a bit inclement of late, so I have not been getting my regular dose of endorphins via aerobic activity.

The 4th Monday of the 2021 version of May is also a bit inclement, with a threatening sky, and predictions of downpours and thunder.

Feeling stir crazy, today I decided to brave the elements to go on a bike ride.

I ended up having myself a mighty fine time rolling my wheels north on the Circle Trail, then through the Wichita Falls version of Beverly Hills, passing through the virtually empty Midwestern State University campus before crossing Midwestern Boulevard to …

Permian Basin Ride of Silence set for Tuesday

By Kate Porter | www.cbs7.com

MIDLAND, Texas (KOSA) – The Permian Basin Ride of Silence was postponed due to severe weather, but riders still gathered to honor cyclists killed while riding.

Three years ago, Jason Haislip was cycling with his two friends – Camron Stotts and Mike Mestas – when a drunk driver hit them.

Stotts and Mestas died as a result of the collision, and Haislip was severely injured.

Haislip says he participates in the Ride of Silence because he wants people to be aware of the dangers cyclists face on the road.

“Ever since we were run over, it definitely has …

River crossings and rain: Ten Dam holds off Strickland after late mechanical to win Gravel Locos

By Daniel Benson | www.cyclingnews.com

‘I got a Texas cowboy boot as a trophy and it’s honestly the best trophy I’ve ever had’ says flying Dutchman

The American gravel scene saw its best field of 2021 descend on Hico, Texas on Saturday for the inaugural Gravel Locos with Laurens ten Dam holding off a late charge from Colin Strickland to win the 155-mile gravel race.

In the pouring rain, the race came down to a crack group of eight that included Ten Dam, Strickland, Ted King, Peter Stetina, Adam Roberge, Dylan Johnson, Sam Boardman, and Mat Stephens but with 40km remaining Ten Dam struck for home.

His move looked to be enough to secure victory but a late mechanical at the final river crossing meant that ten Dam was unable to change gear for the final 10 kilometres. However the former Tour de France top 10 finisher managed to …

Local hero Emily Newsom storms to victory in Gravel Locos

By Daniel Benson | www.cyclingnews.com

Local professional rider Emily Newsom (Tibco-Silicon Valley Bank) came out on top in the elite women’s race at the first-ever Gravel Locos event in Hico, Texas on Saturday.

The 37-year-old, who raced a full campaign of Spring Classics in Europe earlier in the year finished the 155-mile gravel race in a time of 8:04:28 and beat Katie Kantzes by almost 20 minutes

Alison Tetrick and Jessica Cerra finished 22 minutes down but crossed the finish line together to claim joint-third in the race. In the men’s race Laurens ten Dam beat gravel specialist Colin Strickland by 38 seconds.

"Gravel Locos was what …

Connected Bull Creek Greenbelt closer to reality

Super exciting news for old spicewood. Legit trail from 360 to St Eds. Here is the link for Community Impact; can’t find the digital story:

https://editions.communityimpact.com/view/864435178/

The city plans to use this property, combined with an adjacent 11-acre plot of land currently under eminent domain proceedings, to build nature trails with creek access. These trails will help connect the existing trail systems between the 47-acre Bull Creek District Park and the 80-acre St. Edward’s Park to create one continuous Bull Creek greenbelt that runs through some of the unblemished nature preserves left in Northwest Austin’s pocket of Hill Country. …

Another Day, Another Bike Ride

A Dude Abikes | adudeabikes.com

Here at A Dude Abikes, we (that is, the royal we) appreciate guts, intestinal fortitude, and chutzpah. That extends to anyone taking the chance, choice, and time to read. Though we know we’re no ex-Prince Harry, we do like to think of ourselves as having a quality that our former overlapping roommate said one day recently, i.e. intrepid. It’s been raining buckets here in Central Texas (a good thing because we’re behind for the year). I told the roomie, who’s quite a cyclist, that I was going for a walk, despite the chance of rain and not having slept a lot (partially because of his late and early packing racket). That’s when …

Planning for mobility issues: Transportation modes for Temple discussed

By DAVID STONE | kdhnews.com

More sidewalks, expanded bus services and shorter waits at traffic lights were among comments made during a city of Temple Mobile Master Plan community meeting Wednesday.

The meeting — held virtually via Zoom and Facebook Live — was designed to gather recommendations for improving all modes of transportation in Temple, including roadways, bicycle and walking trails and bus routes.

According to Emma Martinez of Alliance Transportation Group, an Austin-based company that works with cities to develop mobile plan guidelines, Wednesday’s session was a big step for Temple.

“We are in the initial phase of this project,” she said. “We want recommendations and ideas from Temple …

No Escaping Falling Moisture Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 22, 2021 by Rick AnkrumMay 22, 2021

It took two tries to get biking today. The first attempt failed as I walked to the door and rain started. I waited until 11:48 AM for the second attempt to allow time for the streets to dry off a little. I rode my Canyon Endurace CF SLX bike and followed my “Atascocita – FM 2100 – Walden” route for 32.13 miles. My week total now stands at 119.83 miles. Hopefully the rain leaves so I can bike tomorrow after church. This was the 7th time biking this route in 2021, all on the same bike.

This has been a rainy week and today it continued. Earlier this morning it rained but I thought it would dry off so I could ride around 11 AM. That was the failed attempt. I was inspired to ride after watching three races on GCN+: Giro d”Italia, Vuelta a Andalucia – Ruta del Sol, and Tour du Finistère.

An overcast sky and strong wind made for a sticky bike ride. Weather conditions: start 78 (86% humidity, 73.9 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 20 mph gusts 28 mph; finish 77 (89% humidity, 73.3 dew point), drizzle, mostly cloudy, wind SE 18 mph gusts 28 mph. Getting to FM 2100 I battled a headwind most of the way. After maing the u-turn at FM 2100 a tailwind helped me return to Kingwood. The drizzle started when I reached Atascocita Shores Drive at FM 1960 biking back to Kingwood. It wasn’t heavy enough to feel but the spots on my handlebars didn’t go away.

No other cyclists crossed my path. Either they stayed home or rode before my time.

After finishing at 2:22 PM I hosed off the Canyon bike. It was too gritty to just wipe down.
