About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Texas Biking News February 17th 2021

Texbiker.net Posted on February 17, 2021 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 17, 2021

With all of the winter weather and dire conditions biking news has been rare this week.

Panel: Grant may aid open space park effort

Douglas Clark | www.amarillo.com

During its regular virtual session, the Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Advisory Committee indicated an effort is underway to designate trails in the area of Ninth Street in Amarillo as an open space park.

"We do have some trails that have been built by volunteers over the last 10 to 15 years," Angela Harney, who has served as the committee’s chairperson, said with regard to the area. "And it is not, technically, an open space park. It is not designated as anything, officially, by the city. The (Amarillo Parks and Recreation) Parks Board has been …

Across the country in 20 days: Princeton student bikes cross-country for St Jude’s

Patrycja Pajdak | www.dailyprincetonian.com

In the last 25 miles of 141 that day, Matthew Marquardt ’21 looked up from pedaling to find himself completely alone on the open road ahead. With golden hour fast approaching, the January sun was beginning to set near Animas, New Mexico, signaling the end of his fifth biking day.

Hearing only the sound of the wheels spinning below him, he admired the mountains lining each side of the open landscape, while attempting to maintain his average speed of 20.2 miles per hour. After all, thousands of miles remained if he was to meet his goal of biking across the US in 23 days. …

… Marquardt began his ride from Torrey Pines State Beach, Calif., on Dec. 30. Hugging the U.S. border, he rode to Texas and then straight across the state, followed by a ride along the coastline and through the middle of Florida’s panhandle to Jacksonville Beach. …

There’s No Biking Like Snow Biking and Walking in a Winter Wonderland in Austin, Texas

A Dude Abikes | adudeabikes.com

Hot it’s not. Hotter than hell would be swell right about now. Because here in Central Texas the Valentine’s / Presidents Day cold front is a weeklong blast that has 2 million people statewide without electricity. Like much of the US, we’ve suffering through an Arctic weather pattern that is so cold (how cold IS it?) that temperatures are below what it normally is in Anchorage, Alaska. It was forecast to be 5 degrees F tonight, and we got our …

Texas Hill Country Bike Away Weekend

Friday, Mar 19, 2021 Fredericksburg, Texas, United States Tour

Gather in historic Fredericksburg to experience the center of German heritage in Texas. This community founded in 1846 by German settlers is rooted in its European past, but influenced by the Texas landscape and culture. Authentic German food along with Tex-Mex and barbecue, and now numerous wineries all merge here.

The cycling is some of the best in Texas with scenic views provided by, you guessed it, hills! Springtime is also special around here as it is famous for its wildflowers. For a laid back break there’s nearby Luckenbach, where Waylon and Willie hung out. Enjoy the beauty and challenge of the Willow City Loop, which Bicycling Magazine called the best ride in Texas. …

Getting around a challenge as historic snow storm paralyzes North Texas

By David Sentendrey | www.fox4news.com

DALLAS – North Texans are trying to stay off the roads and are making the best of a bad situation.

A front-wheel drive car, like others in Dallas, was stuck in the snow Monday. Thankfully, Good Samaritans are lending a tow.

It’s not just cars. Semi-trailer trucks, like one seen in Uptown, are struggling, too.

Lanes off the North Central Expressway are fairly covered. Some Downtown …

SZR Evening Joyride – 2 Laps of Watopia Tick Tock Route

Texbiker.net Posted on February 15, 2021 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 15, 2021

With the worst winter storm since 1989 outdoor biking is not an option for me, a converted northerner. Yesterday I skipped Zwifting and watched four bike race replays on GCN+. This morning I woke to snow covering my yard, front and back so no outside biking today either. The temperature is 22 degrees as I write this, 15 when I got up. Looking at Zwift for an event to warm me up I chose the SZR Evening Joyride Group D for 2 laps on the Watopia Tick Tock route. I rode for 1:05:07 covering 22.88 miles (the advertised distance was 22.4 miles) and 367 feet of climbing. Once I warmed up no more chills until I finished.

According to ZwiftInsider.com, ““Tick Tock” is a clockwise loop covering Fuego Flats and portions of the Ocean Boulevard tube. Released as part of Zwift’s Fuego Flats desert expansion, this route is flatter than Watopia Flat or Volcano Flat, with the only pitchy bits being in and out of Fuego Flats, and in and out of the ocean tunnel.” The climbing was spread out enough to not be an issue for this flatlander.

For lap 1 I stayed with the large group up front ahead of the fence. Somehow on lap 2 almost everyone behind me, including the leader and sweeper, leapfrogged ahead and I rode with two other Zwifters to the finish. I averaged 21 mph for the ride, I wish I did that on the road. I tried to stay with other riders to benefit from the draft. On the last climb out of the underwater tunnel I used a feather powerup to ease up the power and get ahead of two other riders. One of them caught and passed me before we crossed the finish line. From Golden Cheetah a summary of the bike ride data. I was surprised by the power zone breakdown with only 13% of the ride time in zones 1 and 2.

2-15-2021 Golden Cheetah Zwift Bike Ride Summary

I used a USB extension cable to move the ANT+ dongle closer to the bike and had no drop outs today on any sensor.

A recap of last weeks bike rides. Monday and Tuesday I rode outside. Wednesday through Saturday was Zwifting. I am 54 miles ahead of where I was last year as of today, even after skipping yesterday. So far in February I am at 325.32 miles, 175 miles short of my goal.
