About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

77 Degrees, Blue Sky Bike Ride to Tavola

Texbiker.net Posted on February 23, 2021 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 23, 2021

Some fantastic spring weather today in February. I was able to start today’s bike ride earlier with wheel rolling at 11:28 AM. Not waiting on anybody today. I ride my Canyon Endurace bike north on my “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route. The bike ride went 36.09 miles. this boosted my road miles for February to 257.2 leaving 143 miles to reach my goal for February. I don’t think I going to get there but I may get close. Including Zwift miles my total is 412.99, only 87 miles short of the combined goal of 500 miles. This one looks more reachable.

The video shows the bright blue sky and excellent spring weather. Weather conditions for the bike ride: start 74 (30% humidity, 40.8 dew point), a few clouds, wind S 10 mph; finish 77 (30% humidity, 43.6 dew point), a few clouds, wind S 10 mph. No need for leg warmers and I probably could’ve swapped a short sleeve jersey for the jacket but I wasn’t sure how the wind chill would be. I wore a new pair of Bellwether Endurance Gel shorts for the ride. These replaced a pair that I first wore on 8-2-2019.

By the time I reached Tavola I built my average speed to 14.2 mph. I thought once I turned back to the south that would go down but I held it until the southbound US59 frontage road at Kellington before Kingwood Drive. For some reason I seem to lose about a .1 mph average speed riding from Kingwood Place Drive to the frontage road. There is a slight incline on Kellington but I try to power through it, sometimes successfully and other times not. Power zone riding time according to Golden Cheetah was typical.

Planned Route Stymied As I Basked In Sun

Texbiker.net Posted on February 22, 2021 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 22, 2021

A week ago the weather turned nasty but today it turned beautiful. I delayed the start of the bike while waiting for the appliance delivery truck to arrive with my replacement washing machine. My old one was a victim of the cold weather I think or just decided to break in sympathy. I rolled away at 1:07 PM on my Canyon Endurace bike planning on biking my “Atascocita – Walden – FM 2100” route. I followed the route until I got to Fairlake Lane. When I arrived there cars were backed up from the south as far as I could see and not moving except when one turned around and retreated to FM 1960. I have never seen this happen before on Fairlake Lane. Guessing I thought there was a problem at the railroad crossing on Old Atascocita Road or at FM 2100 where the construction is.

Since the traffic was jammed I changed the route to “Atascocita – Walden – E Lake Houston Parkway”. Instead of biking 31+ miles I settled for 28.4 miles. February biking is running into all kind of problems. I did reduce the difference between February 2020 and February 2021 to 32 miles. Reaching my 400 road mile goal for February keeps getting harder.

With the later start the temperature had time to add a couple more degrees. Weather conditions for the bike ride: start 72 (25% humidity, 33.9 dew point), fair, wind N 3 mph; finish 73 (19% humidity, 28.6 dew point), fair, wind N 12 mph. No need for leg warmers but I did wear a long sleeve jersey and windbreaker jacket. I thought with all of the cold weather last week that riding across Lake Houston the wind would be cold as blew over the water but the sun more than offset it.

Looking at the ride summary in Golden Cheetah I see better results than yesterday. Maybe I am building back after the week off the bike. 51% of the riding time was in power zones 3 through 7. The light wind probably helped and reduced the need to be in zones 6and 7 as much.

Some Icy Biking With Cranky Geese On Frozen Sikes Lake

Durango Texas | durangotexas.blogspot.com

With the temperature soaring well above freezing, into the balmy 50s zone, and with snow sufficiently melted, I decided my bike needed to do some rolling.

And so on this 3rd Sunday morning of the 2021 version of February I rolled north on the Circle Trail til I got to Hamilton Park. I experienced only a little snow or ice in only a couple shady locations on the Circle Trail.

Leaving Hamilton Park I encountered no icy dicey conditions rolling through the Wichita Falls Beverley Hills zone.

Same with rolling through the …
