About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Denied A Stem Ride, Zwifting With ZHCC in Watopia

Texbiker.net Posted on February 10, 2021 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 10, 2021

I hoped to ride outdoors today but the below 60 degree temperature and sporadic rain said no. Before Zwifting today I installed a new FSA Gossamer stem on my Lynksey R300 bike. Nothing wrong with the old stem except it is 100mm long and the new one is 90mm long. I wanted to test the new stem but not today; actually it might be a bunch of days if the weather forecast holds for the next week. Photos of the stems.

With the stem installation finished I checked Zwift for events. The ZHCC Sub 2 Wednesday Gravel Rash started at 12:30 PM which gave enough time o get ready. The course ran on the Watopia Serpentine 8 for 60 minutes. ZwiftInsider.com describes the course, “Introduced in Zwift’s December 2020 update, Serpentine 8 is the first route to use the new Mayan Bridge road – a twisty stretch of dirt/stone/wood road crossing the jungle waters and bisecting the Mayan Jungle Circuit. This is a figure 8 route in terms of road layout, but it is ridden in such a way as to cover all roads (the Jungle Circuit and Mayan Bridge) in both directions. It also features a substantial lead-in which includes your first trip over the bridge.“

The route is 11.8 miles long but today biking 60 minutes we covered the course more than one time. My distance came in at 15.69 miles and 768 feet climbing. The 60 minutes ended while climbing which I would’ve preferred to be downhill. When I signed onto the Zwift companion app over 42,000 people were there. At the finish of my bike ride nearby Zwifters totaled 12,116 which I think means the same course but not necessarily the same event. At the start the event had 69 participants. ZwiftPower.com lists the ride and my results along with other Zwifters.

Strava results. 4 medals out of the 6 segments shown.

Currently San Antonio's at 1.5 million people and Bexar County is projected to grow from 1.9 million people in 2020 to over 3.3 million people by 2050. A bike park would be beneficial in centrally located O.P. Schnabel park.

Overdressed As The Weather Warmed on Bike Ride Through Atascocita, Walden And On To FM 2100

Texbiker.net Posted on February 9, 2021 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 9, 2021

A little warmer today for my bike ride. Fog and mist hung around long enough to dampen the ride for a minute or so as I rode through North Woodland Hills in Kingwood. I started the bike ride at 11:40 AM and finished at 2:24 PM. The route name is new but the roads are the same: “Atascocita South – Walden – FM 2100”. The new part of the route is leaving out Huffman due to road construction at FM 2100 where I made a u-turn to head back to Kingwood. The ride was a little longer than I guessed at the start with 33.89 miles. This improved my February total road miles to 169.5 leaving 230.5 miles to reach my goal.

Weather conditions: start 68 (90% humidity, 65.2 dew point), fog/mist, wind E 3 mph; finish 73 (76% dew point, 65.2 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 8 mph. The wind was much lower today than yesterday. The starting temperature was on the borderline of whether to wear leg warmers and I chose to wear them. As the ride progressed the clouds thinned enough for more sun to come through warming me up. I could’ve taken the leg warmers off but then I would’ve had to stuff them in jersey pockets that had other things in them. I wore shorts, leg warmers, long sleeve thermal jersey, and a windbreaker jacket. I was plenty warm, no wind chill today. I prefer overdressed to underdressed.

The weather forecast still talks about a strong cold front arriving late Thursday and hanging around until Monday or Tuesday. A whole lot of Zwifting those days!

The ride wasn’t as powerful as yesterday’s. I rode my Lynskey R300 bike. 54% of the 2:31:26 moving time was in power zones 1 and 2. This was more than yesterday. I am expecting a new FSA handlebar stem today which will shorten my reach by 10mm. I think I am stretched a little too far on the bars. This hopefully will ease my back muscles and improve my pedaling.

Strava assessed the bike ride as harder than my usual efforts even though my power output was lower.

City council to discuss possible active transportation plan

By Barbara Campos | www.kgns.tv

The idea is to connect different sites of town by adding more biking trails, lanes, and walkways that would motivate locals to have a healthier lifestyle.

LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) – Imagine being able to feel safe enough to ride a bike on a city street.

Well, a committee is is proposing solutions so that the city’s roadways can be safer.

Whether you are heading to school, work, going shopping with or without a car, for the Laredo and Webb County Metropolitan Planning Organization, their main goal is to keep the streets safer for drivers as well as pedestrians.

The Laredo and Webb County Metropolitan Planning Organization says the intersection of McPherson and Del Mar, I-35 and Matamoros Street, and Ross Street and Highway 83 are the top three intersections in the city with the most auto accidents.

MPO says one factor for this may have been …
