I leaned toward a bike ride outdoors until I looked at the weather. An unusual combination of conditions kept me inside on Zwift: 65 degrees, sunny, N wind at 22 mph gusts to 31 mph. The wind tipped the scale because I planned on biking north. Indoors the wind was calm and the temperature around 70.
Looking at the upcoming Zwift events I landed on the ZHCC Gravel Rash on the Watopia Serpentine 8 Course. The ride was for 60 minutes. Previously on January 1st I rode this course just after it was opened. Today I biked 14.55 miles climbing 696 feet in 1:01:00. Those miles put me 6 miles ahead of this time last year at 572 miles versus 566. When I opened the Zwift companion app before the bike ride began I noticed there 30,420 people using Zwift. A crowd but not near the peak.
I started with the group and hung with them for about 10 minutes until they pulled away. A smaller group came along side and I rode with them for awhile. Then I lost contact with them on a climb. During this I noticed the ride “sweep” getting closer from behind. When got close I made an effort to stay in front or close behind. I held that position for the rest of the bike ride until the finish. Two accomplishments during the bike ride: moved to level 19 and unlocked “Cool Shades”. 170 people signed up for the ride. Before the ride I went to my garage and selected my gravel bike but at the start the ride switched me to a mountain bike. With dust and rough surface the MTB worked but is slower. According to ZwiftPower.com I finished near the back of the group but not rankings for this ride. From the bike ride data Golden Cheetah calculated my average power at 117 watts and max at 229 watts. The suspension bridge is a tough climb from the bottom of the sway and the course went over it twice.
Since this course is only a month old the segments in Strava show one and I set a personal record on it.
HOUSTON – As a whole, we’ve been studying and counting cars on our roads for more than 70 years, but data on cyclists and pedestrians is limited.
We know a lot about where cars and trucks are going, but The Texas Department of Transportation and other agencies don’t have the same amount of information for bicyclists and pedestrians.
TxDOT has teamed up with Texas A&M Transportation Institute researchers to evaluate the best pedestrian bicycle monitoring technology to get an accurate pulse of those who walk or bike on our Texas roadways.

The temperature reversed yesterday’s move starting cooler and warming up. Today’s bike ride headed south and east on my “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route. Riding my Canyon Endurace bike I began at 11:11 AM, 5 minutes earlier than Monday. I also finished 5 minutes earlier at 1:37 PM. The bike ride covered 32.81 miles in 2:20:00. I am now within 7 miles of reaching my 300 mile goal for January. I noticed the Canyon Endurace is now at 20,395 miles.
I wasn’t the only cyclist out riding. Before leaving Kingwood I passed 3 cyclists. On Fairlake Lane 2 cyclists passed me and I saw them again on FM 1960 as I rode west.
Riding north on FM 2100 the road to the right of the barriers is now gone so I rode in the main lanes. I will pause riding on FM 2100 until the construction works allows me to ride on the new road.
Weather conditions: start 69 (36%humidity, 40.9 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind NE 9 mph; 72 (33% humidity, 41 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind N 9 mph. I wore shorts, a long sleeve thermal jersey, a windbreaker jacket, and new Pearl Izumi Red Elite Gel gloves.
No more new gloves for now but I do have a new long sleeve jersey waiting to be worn. My legs were chilly at the start but after 15 minutes they warmed up. There were times when I felt chilly like when I crossed Lake Houston but overall I dressed correctly. Wind wasn’t an issue today most of the ride.
Strava told me today’s bike ride was harder than my usual efforts.
According to the power breakdown in Golden Cheetah 49% of my riding times was in zones 1 and 2 leaving 51% in zones 3 through 7.

TxDOT Houston District proposes to add bike lanes on the outside shoulders of north bound and south bound SH 3 between Richey Street to FM 518, spanning a length of 14.25 miles. The proposed improvements are located in Houston, South Houston, Webster, and League City in Harris and Galveston counties.
Current Conditions
At intersections, the existing highway facility typically includes four 11-foot mainlanes (two in each direction), one 14-foot left turn lane, and 6- to 8-foot outside shoulders. The existing roadway does not acommodate bicycles.
Proposed Improvements
The addition of bike lanes will utilize the existing shoulders and will require approximately two to five feet of pavement widening in some areas, mostly on …
Went out last week to have a look around. I had ridden here a few years back and walked away saying "not worth the trip." It was pretty deep in the south side and only had about 5-6 miles of trail, much of it seemed to be double track or non-inspiring singletrack. But a lot has changed since then. Not as much because of the trail itself, but the connection to SATN. Now we are at the point where a ride that starts here has connection to another huge network of SATN trails.
I started out by doing the mileage in the …
