The Road to 799: Counting Miles on Familiar Roads

Biking south and east today following my Atascocita – Walden – Spanish Cove Drive route. This was the 9th time biking this route in 2024. Probably one of the routes rode this year. The other contender is my Atascocita – Walden – Huffman route. I started earlier than yesterday at 11:09 AM on my Cervelo Caledonia bike. The cloudy sky didn’t look threatening but on Woodland Hills Drive a few raindrops landed on the Bolt computer screen. That wasn’t the last time that happened until I reached Atascocita Shores Drive at FM1960. From there the sky brightened some until I finished at 1:55 PM. The wind was strong enough to dissuade me from riding south on FM2100 to Indian Shores Road settling to make the u-turn at Spanish Cove Drive. I saw another cyclist on Old Atascocita Road going the opposite direction. Today’s 36.35 miles is the average distance for the route and got to within 58.4 miles of my April goal of 799 miles. YTD 2024 miles is neck to neck with 2023 miles with 2929 versus 2927 for 2023.

Weather: Start 75 degrees, humidity 88%, dew point 70.8, cloudy, wind SE 13 mph; @25 miles 77 degrees, humidity 79%, dew point 70, cloudy, wind S 11 mph; Finish 79 degrees, humidity 78%, dew point 71.8, cloudy, wind SE 13 mph. After I finished the ride the wind picked up to 21 mph with 33 mph gusts like the forecast said.

Fort Worth Police hosting bike safety event in Northwest ISD

All Northwest ISD students and families are invited to a bike safety event hosted by the Fort Worth Police Department on Saturday, May 18, at 10 a.m. at J.C. Thompson Elementary School (440 Wishbone Lane, Haslet).

Organized by certified bike officers from FWPD, the event will include presentations on crosswalk crossing safety, how to correctly maneuver safely with a bike while crossing the street, proper bike hand signals, explanations of street signs, etc.

Lubbock community invited to free event to learn about bike and pedestrian safety

LUBBOCK, Texas — The City of Lubbock Parks and Recreation invited the community to a bike rodeo on May 18 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at 4500 Avenue U, according to a social media post.

MS150 ride passing through Burton

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – The two day MS150 bike race is this weekend and will end at Texas A&M University.

KBTX spoke with rider Kathy Langlotz, who’s been participating in the race for over 20 years.

“A group of my triathlon buddies had done the MS ride the year before and convinced me that I needed to go along and that it was a fun adventure to do on a bike. That sounded fun to me, I thought it would be a great fun to do with my triathlon buddies and it really really was,” said Langlotz.

MS 150 seeking volunteers for Kyle Field finish line

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – The MS 150 cycling event needs more volunteers to help at the finish line celebration in Kyle Field.

Bike MS is a charity cycling event that raises money for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s efforts in empowerment and research for people with Multiple Sclerosis. The event will be from April 27 to April 28.

“It takes over 2,000 volunteers across all of our communities to come together to help make the event happen, “ said Andrew Davis, Senior Specialist of Volunteer Engagement for the National MS Society. “We only have about 80 or so staff members in the state of Texas, and we’re anticipating anywhere between 5,000 to 6,000 riders to hit the road this weekend. Almost 250 of those volunteers, if we get all of our shifts filled, will be there at our Kyle Field finish line.”

April Aspirations: Closing in on the 799-Mile Goal

After yesterday’s chip seal experience on FM1960 I rode north today on mostly smoother roads and streets to Tavola. It has been over 2 months since I rode the New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch route and I wondered what changes I would see. The Lynskey Helix bike wheels were down at 11:36 AM and I was riding. I rode through Hunters Ridge Village, Elm Grove Village, Sherwood Trails Village, and Woodridge Forest on the way to US59’s northbound frontage road. The wind was less than 10 mph from the south but the sun was covered by clouds or overcast. At the start it was 77 degrees and the humidity was the same number making for a moist ride though I didn’t really notice it. My legs powered me along to Tavola, through the streets and back to US9 for the ride to Kingwood. I expected some headwind biking south but it wasn’t overpowering. The hardest section was on Valley Ranch Parkway from TX 99 to FM1314. I finished the ride at 2:38 PM covering 37.89 miles. The miles moved me to within 95 miles of my April goal of 799 miles.

Weather: Start 77 degrees, humidity 77%, dew point 69.2, mostly cloudy, wind S 7 mph; Finish 82 degrees, humidity 64%, dew point 69.0, overcast, wind S 5 mph. A short sleeve jersey and arm sleeves kept me comfortable. I wore a new pair of Voler gun metal blue Caliber shorts. They were very comfortable and resemble my Giordiana shorts.

My Lynskey Helix bike crossed over 4,000 miles on the ride.

I Biked 165 Miles Behind the Pine Curtain of East Texas

Bikepacking—long-distance adventure cycling and camping—is on the rise in Texas. During the muddy, exhausting East Texas Showdown, I found out why.

On a damp March morning, I strapped bags full of camping gear to the frame of my gravel bike and joined about 250 cyclists for the fourth annual East Texas Showdown, one of the state’s biggest and longest bikepacking events. The starting line was in Point Blank, about twenty miles east of Huntsville. Police have increased patrols at the Stockyards, more measures may be on the way

… “An officer on a bike, it doesn’t matter what direction the traffic is going, the bicycle unit can go in and out of traffic, cross the street, ride on sidewalks, so they can get to that call for service quicker than a vehicle would,” he explained.

City council member Carlos Flores, whose district includes the Stockyards, said he’s trying to get more resources for a dedicated bike patrol in the area.

“Recently, specialized bicycles and equipment were donated to the Northwest Division for the division’s own bike patrol. In addition to specialized bicycles and equipment, there is necessary training for Bike Patrol officers,” Flores wrote in an email to NBC 5.

College Station cyclist taken to hospital with life threatening injures following crash

COLLEGE STATON, Texas (KBTX) – One person was seriously injured in a crash involving a vehicle and a bicyclist Tuesday afternoon.

It happened at George Bush Drive and Holik Street around 4 p.m. According to College Station Police, the cyclist was traveling in the eastbound bicycle lane of George Bush Drive in an electric bicycle. The cyclist struck the passenger side of a pickup truck as the pickup was turning onto Holik from the westbound left turn lane.

The cyclist was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries.
