About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Getting Close To My Month’s Goal, Strava Segments, Waning Summer

Texbiker.net Posted on October 19, 2020 by Rick AnkrumOctober 19, 2020

No bike race to watch today with the Giro d’Italia on a rest day. Tomorrow two races take place: Giro and Vuelta a Espana. Hopefully they don’t delay my bike ride too much. I started today’s bike ride at 10:40 AM. The bike for the ride was my Canyon Endurace which is getting close to 20,000 miles. I might get there by the end of the month. Biking 37.33 miles today moved me closer to that and my goal for October.

10-19-2020 MTD Mileage Goal Status

I only need to ride another 65 miles to reach my goal. Unless the weather turns ugly I should do it. Counting the three days I didn’t ride I averaged 28.9 miles per day, 9 miles more than I need. I am 172 miles ahead of schedule.

Summer weather is waning but still hot enough to bring sweat out of my body. I wore a short sleeve jersey and arm sleeves which got wet from sweating. Weather for today’s bike ride: start 81 (87% humidity, 77.2 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S calm; finish 85 (79% humidity, 77.4 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 10 mph. The wind wasn’t a problem today as I had my average speed up to 14.7 mph for several miles before stopping at the Circle K on FM 1314 at Sorters Road. For some reason while I ate a Clif bar it went down to 14.6 mph and bounced up to 14.7 and down to 14.6 until I entered Kingwood where slower riding lowered it to 14.3 mph when I finished at 1:39 PM. As I walked my bike inside the house at the end of the ride I heard rain hitting the fabric patio cover but it didn’t last long.

The route I chose was the “New Caney – Gene Campbell Road”. This was the 14th time this year for the route, 10 times on my Canyon Endurace and 4 times on my Lynskey R300. Next time I should ride the Lynskey.

YTD Bike Rides Summary on Today's Route

The first ride this year on the route was on my birthday back in February.

Looking at the ride data in the Golden Cheetah program shows these results. 55% of the ride I rode in power zones 2, 3, and 4. 92% of the ride I was in heart rate zones 2 and 3. I haven’t figured out what the W’bal zones are yet.

  • 10-19-2020 Golden Cheetah Bike Ride Data-2

Strava reports the ride was consistent with my usual efforts. No personal records either. Only 8 segments over the route. I need to create one. Looking at the Gene Campbell Rd segment the best time is held by Tom Plank at 4:58 versus my 7:53 today. Other segments show similar time differences. I need to ride faster is what it boils down too.

Houston Parks Board Responds To Our Questions

bikehouston.org

This is the response we received from the Houston Parks Board PR person. Hopefully, we can get more details soon! These pieces of infrastructure are absolutely essential and crucial.

“We recently saw Phoebe’s blog on questionable trail connections in Houston and wanted to provide some updates on the trails mentioned in the story. All three areas are being actively addressed and, while there is not a timeframe in place for when connections will be complete, we thought you might like some information on the status of each. …

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.com

As summer winds down and autumn finally cools us off, my stock is trending upward and quarterly reports are good. By that I mean my bicycling progress, of course. As mentioned in my post 55-Mile 2020 Birthday Bike Ride with Friends; 5,009 Miles for the Year, I’ve surpassed 2019’s total miles of 5,005. And, that was 81 days early, too. While I continue to come nowhere close to breaking any wind, um speed records, like the …

Even through the national bike shortage, ‘Yellow Bike Project’ helps people get bikes

Hank Cavagnaro | www.kvue.com

AUSTIN, Texas — Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve heard of a national bike shortage. More people want to spend time outside and there’s not enough supply to make that happen.

One organization in Austin had to make some changes, but it was able to help make a dent in that shortage.

There have been a lot of changes at …

Local businesses host fundraisers for fire department

By Rosemond Crown | www.kwtx.com

SALADO, Texas (KWTX) – An Oktoberfest bike ride and a fall festival in Salado Saturday both raised money to help the Salado Volunteer Fire Department.

Barrow Brewing Company typically hosts a robust Oktoberfest celebration. The company had to cancel the event this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead they opted to do a fundraiser bike ride.

The organizer of the ride, Berta Davis, said 250 people participated in the ride raising about $12,000 for the department.

After the ride, the brewery hosted a small scale …

New Power Pedals, 200 Mile Week

Texbiker.net Posted on October 18, 2020 by Rick AnkrumOctober 18, 2020

The goal for today’s bike ride: cover at least 15 miles to make it a 200 mile week. That goal succeeded with 26.58 miles as I rode my Lynskey R300 bike on what I call the “Oakhurst – Valley Ranch” route. The actual total for the week is 212.11 miles after coming in below 200 miles last week.

10-18-2020 Week's Bike Rides Summary

Weather conditions warmed up from yesterday’s start to the mid 80’s. Wind picked up from the start bringing gusts into play. No cold weather clothing needed. Weather for the ride: start 84 (75% humidity, 75.4 dew point), partly cloudy, wind S 10 mph. Finish 84 (73% humidity, 74.8 dew point), partly cloudy, wind SE 15 mph gusts 18 mph. Out on the road I thought the wind felt stronger but maybe the change in direction accounted for it.

New equipment on today’s bike ride: Favero Assiomo Uno power meter pedals. I thought they were setup but power was not showing on my Wahoo bolt computer a few hundred yards into the ride. Checking the Bolt I failed to calibrate the pedals to the computer. After several attempts to calibrate it completed. From that point power readings appeared in the Bolt screen. Now I wear the same Sidi shoes on the Lynskey and Canyon bikes.

Moving closer to my goal for the month. Only 104 miles to go. If the weather lets me there may be the opportunity to exceed the goal. Year to date my road miles are at 7,325.

Hidden park in Arlington with enticing name is a joyously hilly enclave

By Stacy Breen | fortworth.culturemap.com

My latest park adventure was a bit of a departure. When I look for parks, I try to find remote destinations that could be a day excursion. But this week, my boyfriend had an appointment in Arlington to get fingerprinted.

This meant that we had to find a park nearby.

I searched for parks in Arlington, but they all looked too much like paved neighborhood parks. That’s fine, but it wasn’t what we look for. A park with paved walkways doesn’t fit the criteria. You want nature.

But the morning of, he found a place called …
