About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

TxDOT: Concerns grow as pedestrian, bicyclist deaths increase in Texas

Taylor Pettaway | www.mysanantonio.com

Fatalities with pedestrians have been increasing over the last several years, causing concern for the Texas Department of Transportation, the department said in a news release.

Last year, pedestrian fatalities accounted for 1 in 5 of the state’s traffic deaths with nearly 700 people dying and 1,300 injured in pedestrian-related traffic incidents in Texas— a 5 percent increase from 2018. Crashes involving …

I Bicycled Every Day for an Entire Year: Lessons Learned

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.com

Here’s the thing: I didn’t set out to bike 366 days in a row. If you had a crystal ball and told me my future a year ago, I wouldn’t have believed you. I just went on my birthday ride, a mile per year of life, as I have done the last several years. But instead of taking the next day or more off to rest like a normal person, I became more like Forrest Gump: I just kept bike-ing and bike-ing and bike-ing… Except there was no …

Video: New campaign hopes to limit local bicyclist fatalities

By Ryan Cross | www.newschannel10.com

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – TxDOT’s first ever public education campaign towards bicyclist safety plans to help Amarillo’s local riders.

Some bicyclist groups throughout the nation think this campaign is a step in the right direction.

A few members don’t even ride on typical bicycle lanes throughout the city due to the increased fear of getting hit by a motorist.

“I think Amarillo scores pretty low on the bicycle for people group as score for cycling safety,” said Heath Wakefield, vice president of the Old Tascosa Cycling. …

Among those facilities still closed by local ordinances are gyms. And Seth G, a gym owner, found himself with time on his hands to contemplate current events.

Warm Fall Bike Ride on Spring Creek Greenway

Texbiker.net Posted on October 12, 2020 by Rick AnkrumOctober 12, 2020

The timing was right for me to ride the Spring Creek Greenway today. It helped that the weather was great too. At 10:54 AM I rolled out the driveway on my Lynskey R300 bike to begin the bike ride. I rode 44.49 miles getting my week off to a good start towards 200 miles. I hope the weather cooperates. Apparently I favor my Lynskey R300 to ride the greenway. Out of the 9 times this year 7 have been on it with the other 2 on my Canyon Endurace bike.

Shooting video during the ride I created several “blooper” clips plus the GoPro errors required more editing than usual.

Weather conditions: start 83 (78% humidity, 75.5 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind W 12 mph. Finish 89 (63% humidity, 74.9 dew point), partly cloudy, wind W 9 mph. Getting to the US59 trailhead it was hot but once I was on the greenway the combination of wind and shade made for a comfortable bike ride.

Traffic on the greenway seemed light. A few walkers and maybe a dozen unique bicyclists passed me, some more than once. I thought there might be more since it is Columbus Day. At the 14.2 mile point from the US59 trailhead the greenway was closed for pipeline construction. I wasn’t going to ride to that point but I was curious after seeing several signs warning of the closure.

Today’s bike ride added enough miles towards my 615 mile goal to push me past the halfway point.

10-12-2020 MTD Mileage Goal Status

Strava recorded 4 personal records of various levels. I didn’t look at the segments in advance to target anything of them. Maybe next time I will think of that.

Gravel Bicycle Ride in Castell, Texas

Barron Fujimoto | www.10nineteen.com

Today I headed out west to the Texas Hill Country to do my first proper gravel ride. The route I took starts in the small town of Castell, and loops around to the south before ending back at the town for a total of 31 miles. I rode in the counter-clockwise direction, which pretty much starts out on gravel, and ends on paved roads. I think that worked out great, because at the end of the …

Summer Like Bike Ride Through Oakhurst – Valley Ranch

Texbiker.net Posted on October 11, 2020 by Rick AnkrumOctober 11, 2020

Summer poked its way back into fall with 92 degrees by the end of today’s bike ride through Oakhurst and Valley Ranch before returning to Kingwood. Starting at 1:25 PM after getting home from church on my Canyon Endurace bike I wanted to ride at least 28 miles and ended up biking 29.07 miles. I fell 29 miles short of a 200 mile week because of not biking two days. A summary of the week’s rides.

10-11-2020 Week Bike Rides Summary

I got closer to my 615 mile goal for October with today’s miles. Almost halfway to my goal after 9 days of biking out of 11.

10-11-2020 Month to date progress toward October's goal

During the ride I passed a couple of “casual” bikers along Kingwood Drive with the man riding a nice Fat Tire bike. Later on Briar Berry Lane a cyclist passed going the opposite direction. My camera finger was too slow to catch either of them.

Weather during the ride: start 90 (60% humidity, 74.5 dew point), a few clouds, wind SW 7 mph. Finish 92 (57% humidity, 74.8 dew point), a few clouds, wind S 8 mph. Though the heat was here it didn’t feel quite as hot as it would in July or August.

Another powerful ride with my average speed getting to 14.3 mph before settling to 14.1 by the 3:35 PM finish. After the ride I watched replays of the Giro d’Italia stage 9 and Gent-Wevelgem. both of those races suffered from rain with Stage 9 temperature at the mountain top finish at 9 C. The winner of the stage was shaking during the TV interview with a jacket on. I can’t come close to their power and speed but I enjoy watching and the scenery.

Strava alerted me to a new personal record on “Wildwood” segment and a third on the “Woodridge Forest Straightaway” segment. I don’t get these very often.
