Houston's huge increase in biking during the pandemic this summer, even compared to other cities, demonstrates a few things: – Biking demand exists – The demand is being suppressed by danger from motor vehicles, not weather. – Road space is finite, and should be treated as such https://t.co/BxfOpE2CSk

My usual early Saturday morning start for biking got delayed today while I waited for the temperature to get in the 70’s and watching stage 8 of the Giro d’Italia. I read the newspaper too (probably a waste of time). Wheels rolled at 10:45 AM as I started the ride on my Lynskey R300. Since I missed the last 2 days due to Hurricane Delta I decided to ride longer than my usual Saturday. Due to the construction on FM 2100 I rode to Ramsey Road and back on what I will label the “Kingwood to Ramsey Road – Walden” route for 36.16 miles. Missing those 2 days means this won’t be a 200 mile week though. My week total moved to 142.56 miles with Sunday still left I can bump it higher. Today’s route name is new but all of the roads and streets are ones I bike on frequently.
Those 2 missed days impacted my standing on my 615 mile goal for October but I am still ahead of the pace I need to get there.
I have to agree with Strava that today’s bike ride was harder than my usual effort. The light wind helped some but I think the biggest contributor was the 2 days of not biking. I built my average speed up to 14.5 mph and held it there for a number of miles.
A few cyclists crossed my route but I suspect more finished before I got started.
Weather conditions: start 75 (85% humidity, 70.2 dew point), partly cloudy, wind N 5 mph. Finish 84 (66% humidity, 71.8 dew point), fair, wind NW 8 mph. I wore a short sleeve action fabric T-shirt under my short sleeve jersey because of the coolness at the start along with arm sleeves for sun protection. At the beginning I thought maybe the extra T-shirt was too much making me feel hot but that went away after awhile.
The PowerPod bike ride data charts show the wind direction change after I made the turn around at Ramsey Road. Riding there I thought the wind would be a tailwind on the way back but instead it was a headwind though not so strong and I held my pace, mostly.
Relive.cc recounts today’s ride in under a minute.

Anything can be a work of art—even your bike. This weekend nonprofit bike sharing program Houston BCycle is proving that with its Unicorn Bike Show at Sawyer Yards. Local artists have hand-painted 10 bikes, using public murals they had previously painted in the city as inspiration. All the bikes, along with large-scale photography of the original murals, will be showcased together at this outdoor exhibition during this month’s Second Saturday at Sawyer Park. The event is free, but face masks are required.

A prohibition on parking in Houston’s bike lanes will have to wait another week amid city council confusion about enforcement strategy.
City council opted Wednesday to delay a vote on an ordinance that would forbid motorists from blocking the lanes amid questions about whether the city can offer a free educational class in lieu of a $100 fine for initial violations.
The original ordinance — which was delayed last week — called for …

"My cycling story began in 2017 when I purchased a bike from Walmart to commute to work, about 8-10 miles a day. This was all great until my wheel broke in 2018 and I wasn’t able to fix my bike. This year I moved downtown and I noticed a large amount of people riding as groups. I was inspired to purchase another bike.
Since April, I’ve been riding daily and have lost over 20 pounds since the pandemic stated. I attribute riding to easing the …
OK, COVID is starting to loosen up and AustinBike World Headquarters is starting to approve travel requests so I can start doing trail reviews again.
This week I went out to Grelle Recreation area, which is just west of Muleshoe off of 71.
Here is the full review: http://www.austinbike.com/index.php/west-of-austin/378-grelle
If you are a hard core rider and want to ride with others at your level, I would not recommend making the trek out there, it is like Muleshoe but without as much trail (only 8.5, I think MS is 9.8 officially I usually track between 10-12 per lap.) If you have kids, a spouse, or friends that want to get into biking and you …

At first, I had only cows and wind turbines for company on lonely stretches of Panhandle highway. Then supporters showed up to help the miles go faster.
This was my final week in the Panhandle, traveling from near the top of the region’s western side all the way to its bottom, near Kermit. I got to spend a day off with my family, which was not long enough, and I welcomed a new member to my team, my brother-in-law Javier. I was also lucky to get in a ride with an old friend and two new ones. All in all, it was a solid week of riding. …
The Austin Transportation Department removed two segments of Healthy Streets last week, and barring another wave of cases of Covid-19, will continue winding down the initiative by removing one or two street projects every couple of weeks until all eight are gone. With social distancing still a necessity, however, Bike Austin is calling on the city to reverse the wind-down at least through the end of the pandemic.

It appears to have been another successful bike rally and scavenger hunt for the Houston Heights Association (HHA), and a number of area residents wound up winners last weekend.

As with most if not all of my posts, I’m writing it because I think it might help others in some small way. But I’m a work in progress also trying to figure things out myself. This comes after 2.75 years of daily walking and writing, 4.75 years of blogging, 5.75 years of a whole bunch of bicycling and almost 1.00 year of daily biking, plus 6.75 years of daily yoga. So I know a thing or two about my own sports psychology. (I’m no professional though, so see a real doctor if you need one.) As I approach the zenith of several goals, one quite …
