About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Fort Worth Paschal junior’s bike was stolen. The football team pitched in for a new one

BY BRIAN GOSSET | www.star-telegram.com

Fort Worth Paschal junior Sean Miller, who films football practices, received a new bike from the football players after his was stolen earlier in September.

Sean Miller loves football at Fort Worth Paschal.

He doesn’t play.

He films the practices and flies the team’s drone, but the program treats him as if he was another player. So when Miller’s bike – his main source of transportation – was stolen, the team decided to get him a new one.

“I’ve known Sean since middle school,” Paschal junior cornerback …

Temperature, Humidity, Dew Point Drop Below Normal But Not Biking

Texbiker.net Posted on September 29, 2020 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 29, 2020

Whoa, 53 degrees outside when I got up. I read the forecast which promised warming up to about 80 after noon. I didn’t wait that long for the temperature to get in the 70’s and began my bike ride at 11:01 AM. Riding my Canyon Endurace I set out on what I call the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route planning on biking at least 31 miles. I actually rode 33.53 miles boosting my week’s total to 59.97 miles. I reached my 700 mile goal for September on Sunday but today’s miles added enough to make up for my short fall on my August goal. One more biking day in September to add more miles, maybe get to 800 for September. September goal recap.

9-29-2020 MTD Mileage Goal Status

I altered today’s route by not actually biking through Huffman. Because of the strong wind I didn’t go north on FM 2100 to FM 1960 but instead returned west on Old Atascocita Road and Fairlake Lane. The trees lining Old Atascocita Road provided some wind break going west. My legs needed that.

Last night I watched a YouTube video on the Loam Ranger channel about the best settings for a GoPro camera. I made some changes to my Hero 7 Black and added some homemade wind muffs. Today’s ride tested the muffs and they failed. I don’t know if the muffs are too small or if the mic I left uncovered picked up all the wind noise. I moved one muff to the uncovered mic and will test that on tomorrow’s bike ride. The foam windscreen worked better. Some pictures of the muffs.

  • 9-29-2020 GoPro Hero 7 Black Mic Muffs-1
  • 9-29-2020 GoPro Hero 7 Black Mic Muffs-2

While yesterday’s front moved on the wind stayed behind making the bike ride challenging whenever I hit the headwind. At the start the northerly wind was a not too bad 8 mph but by the time I finished at 1:39 PM the wind increased 15 mph gusting to 24 mph from the north. That made for tough pedaling once I turned north on the return to Kingwood from FM 1960. Weather conditions at the start and finish: start 77 (42% humidity, 51.8 dew point), fair, wind N 8 mph. Finish 78 (29% humidity, 43.4 dew point), fair, wind N 15 mph gusts 24 mph. Notice the low humidity and dew point at the end of the ride. Those levels have not been around here in quite a while.

I decided to wear a long sleeve jersey under a short sleeve jersey because of the temperature but didn’t think about the wind picking up so much. Glad I made that choice; at times in the shade and the wind kicking up it was cool.

Stopping for a few minutes on Old Atascocita Road east of FM 2100 I took these photos. I liked the design and massive size of the gates. Lots of blue sky too.

Houston’s ghost bikes are memorials to the riders in our blind spots

By Jay R. Jordan | www.chron.com

For most Houstonians, including yours truly, our cars are our lives. If you commute to work in a car or enjoy a Sunday drive, that space becomes a second home. A natural part of life.

But in another way, cars are often the death of us.

It was only a few weeks after Stoney R. Jackson was hit and killed by a motorist while riding down Old Spanish Trail that his life was publicly memorialized on the route with a ghastly bicycle.

Like nearly all other cyclists …

123 Days of Summer Ends. Breakout Cold Wear Gear

Texbiker.net Posted on September 28, 2020 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 28, 2020

I try to not lead off with the weather but it dominates today’s bike ride. Around 9 AM I noticed the temperature going down and the wind picking up. The front Space City Weather wrote about arrived. I got ready to ride but I brought out some of my “cold weather” clothing: leg warmers, thermal long sleeve jersey, and wind jacket. I needed them for the 11:04 AM start but by the 1:15 PM finish the temperature actually rebounded from 68 to 72 but the wind didn’t let up.

Yesterday I wore summer bike kit clothes.

Because of the strong wind I decided to ride what I label the “Kingwood – Community Drive-Valley Ranch” route. Heading north into the 15 mph wind and 22 mph gusts required strong pedaling. I glanced at the Lezyne Macro Plus computer at times to see how much power it took to keep the Canyon Endurace moving. Sometimes the watts exceeded 200 for several seconds. Fortunately the route included some west facing sections tallow my legs to recover before hitting the headwind again. At Community Drive I turned back to the south and the strong wind became a tailwind. I don’t know if the tailwind canceled all of the energy to get there but it came close. Weather: start 68 (88% humidity, 64.3 dew point), overcast, wind N 15 mph gusts 22 mph. Finish 72 (77% humidity, 64 dew point), overcast, wind N 23 mph.

The ride totaled 26.43 miles, improving September’s total miles to 731.73 padding my goal breaking. Two more potential biking days to add more miles.
