About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Humans of UD: Lindy Litzenburger

By Mia Samaniego | udallasnews.com

As a frequent lobbyist in Washington D.C. with her bicycle-shop owning family since she was 12 years old, junior Lindy Lizenburger was determined to major in politics upon entering the University of Dallas.

Litzenburger began to take interest in politics when she watched the presidential debates between Barack Obama and John McCain during the 2008 presidential election.

“I was old enough to understand what was going on,” Litzenburger said. The debates were interesting even to her 8 year-old-self, and they inspired her to study politics.

Her family lobbies for causes on their trips to D.C. including more accessible routes for bicyclists and funding for bicycle lanes on the side of the road. The Litzenburger family brings these causes forward out of concern for the safety of bicyclists, some of which are …

Beat the Street, Sweetwater, Texas September 26, 2020

Roy and Christine | roy-pedalpushers.blogspot.com

Registration was set up by course length so the processing time went fast and smoothly.

I don’t know the count but an impressive number of riders showed up despite the event having been postponed from the original date.

PowerPod Back, New Route Start, Personal Segment Record

Texbiker.net Posted on October 1, 2020 by Rick AnkrumOctober 1, 2020

October biking got off to a great start today. Weather was almost perfect (warmer being prefect) as I rolled out on my Lynskey R300 bike at 11:14 AM. Before starting I visualized the route and came up with a different 7 miles. Normally I loop through Sherwood Trails and back to Hunters Ridge but today I didn’t return to Hunters Ridge until the end of the ride at 1:52 PM. This happened on what I call the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route. In those 7 miles I rode on streets and greenbelt trails in these Kingwood villages: Sherwood Trails, Elm Grove, Greentree, Sand Fork. Some of the greenbelt trails have been a long time since my last visit.

Changing the start of the route ended up with me biking 33.66 miles, about a mile and a half longer than usual. This is a good start towards my 615 mile goal for October. I need to ride 19.84 miles each day to get there and today gave me a small cushion. The goal is lower than September because there may be some days when the temperature is below my 60 degree threshold.

I used the foam windscreen on the GoPro Hero 7 Black camera wrapped around the camera frame. The audio was slightly better but not to the level that I want. For the next ride I changed the mic setting back to “Wind” and look for something to shield the mics.

The PowerPod provided power readings during the ride since I am back to using the Wahoo Elemnt Bolt computer which connects easily to the PowerPod. It required an Out & Back calibration at the beginning of the ride but after that it sent data to the Bolt. The charts below do not include heart rate because the PowerPod didn’t connect to my Tickr Fit but I uploaded the profile with that connection for the next ride.

10-1-2020 PowerPod Bike Ride Data Charts

I recorded a new personal record for a Strava segment on part of the different starting route along Kingwood Drive.

Tyler State Park

By hurronnicane | austinmountainbiking.com

While it may not qualify as a destination based on the amount of riding, Tyler State Park is a great place to camp, ride, and kayak if you have reason to be near here. Roughly five hours from Austin, it is a world apart. My wife’s family lives nearby and I have escaped into the woods to ride for the last 20+ years. The trail system has more vertical relief than you might expect, the trail surface is mostly sand or …

Tour de Texas, Week 4: Battling High Winds and Exhaustion in the Panhandle

By Aaron Chamberlain | www.texasmonthly.com

I struggled to keep my bike straight on stretches of desolate highway this week. When the wind was at my back, I’d never been more thankful.

This week had it all—highs and lows. I spent most of the week traveling through the Panhandle, a region of Texas I had never visited before. It challenged me with a few long rides and rolling hills, but mostly wind. The winds in the Panhandle are surely a mighty foe, but they can also become a loving friend when least expected. In Dalhart, as I was bringing my bike into my hotel room, my neighbor asked where I was headed. When I told him about the ride, he said, “You’re a machine.” Just like all machines, we all break down from time to time—and it helps to know a good mechanic. …

September Biking Ends On High Note, Great Weather

Texbiker.net Posted on September 30, 2020 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 30, 2020

What a blue sky for the last day of biking in September! I readied my Canyon Endurace bike with my replacement Wahoo Elemnt Bolt computer and rolled out on today’s bike ride at 10:57 AM. I rode north on what I label the “Kingwood – SH 242 – Kingwood” route. I needed to ride 35 miles to make it an 800 mile month and exceeded that biking 37.19 miles. This put my total for September at 802.46 miles, 102 miles over my goal. I more than made up the miles I was short on my August goal. A summary of September biking.

9-30-2020 RWGPS September Bike Rides Summary

Missing 6 days made me wonder if I could reach my goal but once the weather got better I was back on the road.

For the second day the sky was solid blue from rim to rim. When I awoke this morning a quick check of my home weather station showed 51 degrees but I knew the forecast called for 80+ degrees. By the time I started at 10:57 AM it was 80 and at the 1:49 PM finish 84 degrees. Wind wasn’t much of a problem after the strong wind the last two days with 5 mph at the beginning and 7 mph at the end. Humidity and dew point were extremely low for our area making it feel cool. Overall weather during the ride: start 80 (40% humidity, 53.7 dew point), fair, wind SW 5 mph. Finish 84 (33% humidity, 51.8 dew point), fair, wind variable 7 mph. I wore arm sleeves instead of a long sleeve jersey and felt comfortable.

My testing mic muffs on the GoPro camera had mixed results today. Sometimes the wind noise frowned out my voice but overall it was okay. Tomorrow I will remove the wind muffs, put the Hero 7 Black in the frame with the foam windscreen. The frame adds fills the foam better than just using the camera.

Getting the Wahoo Elemnt Bolt computer back into use was refreshing. It’s features and setup was easier than the Lezyne Macro Plus. Text message alerts and phone calls work better on the Bolt. Also the PowerPod connects with Bolt which I plan on using on tomorrow’s bike ride on my Lynskey R300. I forgot to change the setting in the Favero app to double the power sent to the Bolt but it appeared to ignore it since I saw power reading with odd numbers which would happen if the pedals doubled the power.

Today marked the 10th time biking today’s route in 2020. 9 times on my Canyon Endurace and once on my Lynskey R300.
