About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Some cars that hit him didn’t even stop, police said.

“Several vehicles that struck the male did not stop and the Traffic Unit would like to speak with the operators of those vehicles, or any other witnesses, about the accident,” the Killeen Police Department said in a news release.

Police have not named the man, pending notification of next of kin. …

Frustrations, Late Start, Coming Weather Changes

Texbiker.net Posted on September 19, 2020 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 19, 2020

A late start for today’s bike due to a commitment elsewhere. I missed the end of stage 20 of the Tour de France and the University of Cincinnati football game, plus some other non-biking technology failures. I and my Lynskey R300 began the bike ride at 3:47 PM and finished at 4:59 PM after biking on Kingwood streets 15.63 miles. This was enough miles to make it a 205.96 mile week. I lost some of the miles I was ahead on my 700 mile goal but still have a lead. Below is a summary of the week’s rides and how I stand on my monthly goal.

Summary of this week's bike rides
9-19-2020 MTD Mileage Goal Status

The weather is subject to change with a tropical storm running around in the Gulf of Mexico. I could’ve waited until to tomorrow to ride but rain is possible and that would mean not hitting 200 miles and loosing miles I am ahead for my month goal.

Wind was strong during today’s bike ride. The Kingwood trees helped a little but whenever I got out in the open it was hard riding into. Weather conditions: Weather: start 86 (51% humidity, 65.9 dew point), a few clouds, wind NE 16 mph gusts 21 mph. Finish 86 (54% humidity, 67.2 dew point), partly cloudy, wind NE 15 mph. Tropical storm warning, flash flood watch, hurricane statement. Next week might be very wet.

I received the Barfly out front adapter for my Lezyne computer allowing me to use the computer on my Lynskey bike. No problem pairing the speed, cadence, and heart rate sensors but the PowerPod refused to pair with the Lezyne computer. This meant no power reading during the bike ride or after. I posted a question on the PowerPod forum to see if I am doing something wrong.

Also I ordered a pair of foam windscreens for the GoPro cameras. Maybe these will improve the audio on my videos, particularly with the Hero 7 Silver which doesn’t connect to an external mic.

August & September 2020: Executive Director’s Report

By Nick Hellyar | bikehouston.org

August and September have gone by in a flash!

We have some pretty exciting news to relay this month.

For starters, we’ve started selling ride packets for The Moonlight Ramble 2020! This will be the 49th year of operation. That’s 49 years of late night riding (often in costume) around Houston! Due to COVID, we’ve had to change a few things. This year there will be no group ride or ride support. Meaning that people ride on their own time (this year, we’re recommending that people ride during the day). We have assembled a pretty awesome ride packet this year that includes: …

Texas Tumbleweed 100 sets a record

John Key | www.moorenews.com

In spite of the COVID crisis, or perhaps because of it, a record 148 people turned out Saturday to ride in the Texas Tumbleweed 100 and raise money for the Moore County YMCA. "We were pleasantly surprised by how many came out despite COVID," said Susan Riseling, one of the chief organizers of the event. "We were worried … but we just pressed on, acted like it wasn’t there, and it worked."

YMCA Board President Harold Grall said it was too soon to know how much money had been raised, but he thought it would be more than previous years. Because of the COVID crisis, they event this year had been …

Upcoming Withdraw Symptoms, What A Dew Point Relief But With Wind

Texbiker.net Posted on September 18, 2020 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 18, 2020

As the Tour de France approaches the end I am anticipating withdraw symptoms to appear on Monday morning. In the meantime I will be on the bike fighting off those symptoms. I watched stage 19 today before rolling down the driveway on my Canyon Endurace bike at 11:11 AM. Stage 19 included some hills but my bike ride on the “New Caney – Gene Campbell Road” route was flat ground in comparison. I biked 38.94 miles which positioned me to only need 10 more miles to hit 200 miles for the week. Another milestone: my Canyon Endurace reached 19,000 miles. Those miles accumulated from February 2018 to now. Today’s bike ride was the 12th time on the route in 2020. The last bike ride was July 31st. Today was the 229th bike ride of 2020.

Lower humidity and especially the dew point made it feel cooler and comfortable during the bike ride. For a change when I finished the ride at 2:24 PM I wasn’t drenched in sweat. But the strong NE wind required extra energy getting to the north side of Caney Creek where I turned back to the south to go right on FM 1485 where the wind was more helpful. Weather conditions: start 82 (59% humidity, 66 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind NE 13 mph. Finish 89 (41% humidity, 62.3 dew point), partly cloudy, wind N 15 mph.

Not caught on video one other cyclist passed me early in the bike ride. The other cyclist appears near the end. Video doesn’t capture the wind rustling my arm sleeves as I rode nor the pleasant weather coolness. I thought it was perfect Texas weather.

Check my Strava ride activity to see bike ride data. The link to my SportTracks activity page.
