About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Weather Change, 12 MPH Wind Both Ways to Splendora

Texbiker.net Posted on July 20, 2020 by Rick AnkrumJuly 20, 2020

Started the week with 43.61 miles on my Lynskey R300 bike as we rode the “Kingwood – Splendora – Kingwood” route for the 5th time this year. Wheels rolled at 9:55 AM. My Lynskey R300 carried me 4 of those and my Canyon Endurace the other ride. That is unusual since I ride the Canyon Endurace bike more often. This ride puts me within 161 miles of reaching my goal for July of 800 miles. If the weather and my legs cooperate I may reach that goal by the end of the week.

7-20-2020 YTD Bike Rides Summary Today's Route

Speaking of the weather, it will probably be cooler and wetter this week than last week. Lots of clouds filled the sky as I rode north to Splendora and back to Kingwood. At times some of them looked like rain but it held off and I finished the ride at 1:30 PM without getting rained on but I got plenty wet from sweating. Getting to Splendora I rode into a 12 mph headwind and enjoyed easier pedaling back to the south with a tailwind. Weather conditions: start 84 (82% humidity, 77.6 dew point), partly cloudy, wind NE 12 mph. Finish 89 (68% humidity, 77.4 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind NE 12 mph.

Several bikers passed me or I passed them along the route. Some made it into the video but I missed the others because my quick draw camera move is too slow. I will be glad when my Hero 7 Black camera returns.

Strava says today’s bike ride was harder than my usual effort. I think the wind played a part in that. Some ride data:

  • average heart rate 128 bps
  • max heart rate 155 bps
  • average power 78 watts
  • max power 347 watts
  • moving time 3:06:55, total time 3:34:33

I stopped at the Grand Parkway and Valley Ranch Parkway for a short break to eat a Clif Bar and take a few of selfies.

The PowerPod bike ride data charts show the effect of the wind on the way to Splendora and back where the blue is above and below. I turned south around the 21 mile point in the bike ride.

Author: Marlen Trevino | www.myfoxzone.com

The 2020 MS150 Midland ride took place Saturday and started at the TXDoT headquarters.

SAN ANGELO, Texas — The West Texas heat did not stop riders from participating in the 2020 MS150 Midland Bike Ride. The 72-mile ride began at 7 a.m. Saturday at the Texas Department of Transportation, 4502 Knickerbocker Road.

The route included several locations for riders wanting a shorter ride, and provided rest areas, as well as support throughout the ride. Some rode 20 miles, some rode 40 and others completed a 75-mile trek in support of those affected by multiple sclerosis. …

To some, Saturday mornings are for mountain biking. Saturday marked a virtual ride for Bike MS, a charity to help those with Multiple Sclerosis, with some local cyclists taking part across the Basin. 77 Degree Start, A Plethora of Bikers, 200+ Mile Week

Texbiker.net Posted on July 18, 2020 by Rick AnkrumJuly 18, 2020

Wheels rolled at 8:13 AM to start the bike ride. The Canyon Endurace CF SLX bike and I set out on the “Atascocita – Huffman _ Walden” route to ride at least 18 miles to reach 200 miles for the week and to see other cyclists. I accomplished both of those biking 32.58 miles and seeing numerous bikers. The week’s total now stands at 214.68 miles and July is at 595.65 miles leaving 205 miles to reach my goal for the month. I biked this route for the 12th time this year. Sunday will be a rest day. A summary of the week and rides on this route are below.

For the first time in many bike rides the starting temperature was not in the 80’s but a humid 77 degrees. By the 10:40 AM finish it was “only” 88 degrees, almost a cold front compared to the 100 degree days earlier in the week. The forecast calls for several days of low 90’s high temperature. While the temperature stayed low I sweated a lot today, feeling like I swam at the end when I sat on an old T-shirt on the patio to absorb some of the sweat before going inside. Weather conditions: start 77 (96% humidity, 75.4 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind calm. Finish 88 (74% humidity, 78.5 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind calm. The calm wind didn’t help evaporate the sweat.

Saturday bike rides are special when I see all of the other bikers along the route. If I got out of bed earlier to get to Bike Barn at FM 1960 I could ride with the group from there but that’s too early. Some times I see many bikers with today being average. When organized rides fall on Saturday the number drops off. I always try to wave or say hi when we pass.
