About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Solid Patch Work, Closing In On 200, Ice Water On The Go With Light Wind

Texbiker.net Posted on July 3, 2020 by Rick AnkrumJuly 3, 2020

As I began today’s bike ride I felt some concern about the patched tube and boot in the rear tire of the Lynskey R300 bike from Tuesday flat but after a few minutes of riding those disappeared. The rear tire turned smoothly without a flat spot like Tuesday after I patched the tube and used the patch foil as a boot on the cut sidewall. I aired up the front tire before the ride because it felt a little soft when I squeezed it hard. After the ride the front tire felt firm.

The bike ride began at 9:39 AM as I and the Lynskey R300 bike rolled onto the street to begin riding the “New Caney – Gene Campbell Road” route for the 9th time this year. The ride finished at 12:37 PM after biking 37.41 miles. With those miles the week now totals 191.14 miles and July at 105.5 miles. I am in good position to bike 200+ miles this week. After 3 days of biking in July I am at 13% of my 800 mile goal. Below is a summary of the rides on today’s route so far this year.

7-3-2020 YTD Bike Rides Summary Todays Route

July weather is in full force. Getting on the road before the heat hits is a good idea. I stopped a couple of times in the shade and felt the coolness as the breeze blew around me. Conditions at the start and finish of the ride: start 86 (83% humidity, 79.8 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SW 6 mph. Finish 92 (62% humidity, 77.5 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SW 7 mph. I added some extra ice to the CamelBak before leaving home and the cold water lasted until the end. After the ride I sat on the patio cover letting the breeze cool me down before going inside. Wind wasn’t too strong today letting my legs turn a higher gear. I built my overall average speed to 14.0 mph and held it there until I got back to Kingwood.

Strava reports that today’s bike ride was consistent with my usual effort.

Strava Bike Ride Summary

I like to include the PowerPod charts when I ride the Lynskey R300 because it shows different data in the chart format. Wind is important to biking because of the resistance or assistance it provides. Today the wind impact on the ride shows in the second chart from the top. With the blue area below the white line I enjoy a tailwind and a headwind when the blue is above the white line. Biking on FM 1314 to the SE starting around mile 21 the wind does not show a big difference from the road speed, reflecting low to no headwind.

BCycle operates bike shares across the country, including in Fort Worth. Some users received a letter in the past week informing them that BCycle found malware on its website that allowed a hacker to see personal information between Jan. 24 and April 26.

I grew up overweight, and I was even given the nickname “Porky.” The bike was everything, but once I got a car, I stopped exercising and gained weight through college.

Eventually, I attempted to go on a diet with a friend when I was 20. I dropped nearly 150 pounds, but I was barely eating and knew this wasn’t the way to go, so I started to study diet and exercise. …

I Should Know This Route By Heart After 21 Times to Huffman

Texbiker.net Posted on July 2, 2020 by Rick AnkrumJuly 2, 2020

An earlier than normal start on today’s bike ride. The Canyon Endurace CF SLX bike and I started turning the pedals at 9:07 AM as I began the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route biking 32.25 miles. The week’s total now stands at 153.74 miles and July at 68.1 miles. This puts me in a good position to bike 200+ miles this week. This is the most often rode route at 21 times in 2020. The Canyon Endurace went 13 times and the Lynksey R300 8 times. The screenshots below are from Golden Cheetah program breaking out the routes and bikes on each route.

  • 7-2-2020 YTD Bike Rides Summary on Canyon Endurace Todays Route
  • 7-2-2020 YTD Bike Rides Summary on Lynskey R300 Todays Route

It felt extra humid starting this early. Weather during the bike ride: start 87 (83% humidity, 80.9 dew point), mostly cloudy with haze, wind variable 6 mph. Finish 91 (71% humidity, 80.2 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SW 8 mph. Wind wasn’t much a factor today. My legs felt good as I got my overall average speed up to 14.2 mph before returning to Kingwood.

A few cyclists didn’t make the video today because they passed out of camera range before I could record them.

I rode through the area where I had the flat on Tuesday without any issues. I am watchful after a flat when I return to the scene of the crime.
