About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Lynskey R300 For Two, Bringing Some Heat, Visiting A Past Biking Buddy

Texbiker.net Posted on June 8, 2020 by Rick AnkrumJune 8, 2020

With 8 days into June biking I thought I would’ve ridden today’s route more than just 2 times this year but that is the case. On top of that, both times were on my Lynskey R300 bike. This was the second day in a row that I rode the Lynskey R300 which I don’t normally do. Today’s bike ride started at 10:32 AM and lasted 2:56:19 riding time finishing at 2:10 PM covering 41.34 miles. A good start to the week’s biking. I wanted to start earlier but just couldn’t get out the door.

6-8-2020 YTD Bike Rides Summary Kingwood Splendora Kingwood

Part of the reason I wanted to start earlier was the high temperature forecast of mid to upper 90’s. Another reason was I needed to get back in time for a late afternoon appointment. The weather during the bike ride: start 90 (68% humidity, 78 dew point), partly cloudy, wind W 9 mph. Finish 95 (55% humidity, 76.7 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind NW 9 mph. It was a good idea to use the CamelBak for water with the heat and longer bike ride. I stopped at Buster Brown Propane in New Caney to visit with Mark Peterson and this time he was there. We talked about biking in the past, the present and how the propane business is doing.

After that stop the next one was a short break to eat a Clif Bar to power me back home. Just before that stop I took these pictures of the Lynskey R300 and the Valley Ranch flower.

  • 6-8-2020 Bike Ride Valley Ranch-2
  • 6-8-2020 Bike Ride Valley Ranch-3

With the Clif Bar and somewhat rested legs I set off to finish the ride. The clouds seemed to increase as I neared Kingwood, probably from Tropical Storm Cristobal in Louisiana. Later driving to my appointment it was raining in a small area; glad I didn’t get caught there.

No GoPro video freezes today and the audio recorded good too. This doesn’t support my heat theory on yesterday’s freezes. It was hotter today and the ride was today was 20 miles longer.

The PowerPod charts show the power and other data but I look closer at the wind, the second graph from the top with blue and white lines. Blue below the white line means tailwind and blue above shows headwind. I enjoyed both today. Biking to Splendora with the tailwind was nice and the headwind coming back had some tall spikes causing me to pedal harder.

Hike-bike trail study gets OK; Route would give access to Bahia Grande

Steve Clark | www.themonitor.com

The city of Brownsville has gotten the green light for a feasibility study on creating a scenic hike-and-bike trail through the Bahia Grande as part of the Caracara Trails network.

The 25,000-acre Bahia Grande Unit of the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge includes 10,000 of estuary that was turned into a dust bowl by construction of the Brownsville Ship Channel in the 1930s and highway construction in the 1950s, but has been about 90 percent restored. The trail would link Brownsville to the …

Walnut Creek PSA

By TheX | austinmountainbiking.com

Now that people have realized that the WuFlu Infodemic was overblown, and they are out in force again…riders at Walnut seem to have forgotten that the trails are bi-directional, and MULTI-USE. There are people walking/hiking/running, kids, and dogs off-leash. There are places to ride that are more MTB centered, and they can be ridden with less chance of injuring, or just pissing off people. I rode out there yesterday, and hiked with …

When Its Hot The GoPro Is Not, 200+ Mile Week, Can You Hear Me Now?

Texbiker.net Posted on June 7, 2020 by Rick AnkrumJune 7, 2020

Sundays’ are when I start bike rides after church and today I rolled out at 1:56 PM and finished at 3:44 PM. I rode the Lynskey R300 bike on the “Kingwood Streets” route for 21.78 miles. The week finished with 232.86 miles, the most miles in a week since the week beginning April 20th. June also totals 232.86 miles, 29% of the way to my 800 mile goal. Today marks the 7th time I rode this route in 2020.

6-7-2020 YTD Bike Rides Summary Kingwood Streets

A summary of this week’s bike rides.

With the late start the temperature was 92 with a stiff northerly wind. I wore arm sleeves for sun protection and also their cooling effect. To go along with them I wore a short sleeve jersey and bike shorts. Weather during the ride: start 91 (58% humidity, 74.5 dew point), a few clouds, wind N 17 mph. Finish 92 (60% humidity, 76.2 dew point), partly cloudy, wind NE 16 mph. Pedaling into the headwind was hard but the wind helped cool me off.

Today was the first time to use the new GoPro mic adapter frame on the Lynskey R300 bike. During the bike ride the GoPro froze twice, maybe due to the heat. Each time I pulled the battery out and that fix it. The frame vibrates back when I ride on rough roads, just like on the Canyon Endurace. How it looks on the Lynskey R300.

  • 6-7-2020 Lynskey R300 GoPro Setup-2
  • 6-7-2020 Lynskey R300 GoPro Setup-3
  • 6-7-2020 Lynskey R300 GoPro Setup-1

Sound issues continue with the mic apparently cutting out when the road is rough. Maybe the mic plug into the jack is loose? Searching for perfection is hard. I would do more clips off the bike if the mic could pick up my voice. A wireless mic might solve that problem but it is more money.

Link to my Strava bike activity page. I would include the embed code from Strava.com but it says “too many requests”. So I will use the RideWithGPS.com code.

Bike Ride for Black Lives Matter, Racial Equality, and Justice For All

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.com

Word arrived that this bike ride was happening Friday night. My social calendar being empty as always, and not sitting shiva either, it seemed like a good way to reduce some of my white privilege. I’ve been an ally in a variety of causes ever since I was a baby; my mom took me to civil rights protest in Little Rock, Arkansas and Dallas, Texas. I’ve wanted to be solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement, but a small number of people hijacked protests with violence, and …
