About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Carrot and Stick? No, Apple Fritter and Stick

Texbiker.net Posted on June 4, 2020 by Rick AnkrumJune 4, 2020

I tried to get started before 10 AM but little things sidetracked me so the bike ride started at 10:04 AM. I will try harder tomorrow. The Lynskey R300 and I set out on the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route for the 20th time this year, 8 times on the Lynskey R300 and 12 times on the Canyon Endurace. The route covered 33.08 miles today boosting my week and month total to 139.12 miles, 17% of the way to my goal for June.

One of the things that sidetracked my start was moving the GoPro camera from below the bike computer to the handlebar stem. I am not sure I didn’t try this before since I had the mount for many months. The reason I moved it was in anticipation of the new GoPro frame arriving today that will raise the position by 1/2″ with the mic adapter slot under the frame. Also It is easier to push the record button now and I can hear the beeps from the camera.

  • 6-4-2020 GoPro Setup Lynskey R300-1
  • 6-4-2020 GoPro Setup Lynskey R300-2
  • 6-4-2020 GoPro Setup Lynskey R300-3

The rubber band is temporary until the new frame arrives. I remembered to go into the settings and change the “touch screen” lock position so the video would be upright. This saves time after the bike ride. The rolling video studio continues to evolve.

Weather was much better than yesterday with no rain and warming up as the ride progressed. I wore shorts, short sleeve jersey, and sunscreen. I kept the Tickr Fit on my right forearm to give my left forearm more time in the sun to tan the strip where the Tickr Fit was. During the bike ride: start 82 (86% humidity, 77.8 dew point), partly cloudy, wind W 5 mph. Finish 90 (65% humidity, 76.7 dew point), partly cloudy, wind variable 5 mph.

The apple fritter reward for completing today’s bike ride came from Pat’s Donuts on yesterday’s ride. I showed will power by not eating it yesterday.

Bikes pedal back into favor in Galveston County amid pandemic, social distancing

By KERI HEATH | www.galvnews.com

They say you never forget how to ride a bike, and many residents around Galveston County are proving that adage to be true.

Bicycle sales are soaring across the county as people trying to find socially distant activities flood bike shops with orders and calls for service.

It’s a boon to a bicycle industry that for years had been waning as fewer people took interest in going outside, shop owners said.

Bike Patrol – Police with Peddle Power!

Lytle Texas | lytletx.org

Officers assigned to the Bike Patrol Team use specially equipped mountain bikes and are required to complete a minimum of 40 hours of law enforcement bicycle patrol school. The bike patrol serves many purposes.

It is deployed for routine patrol, targeted enforcement (special crime issues), and for special events. It allows officers to easily interact with citizens since officers on a bike are more accessible than those in a car. Officers are also able to move quickly through parking lots and special events.

Space City Weather Forecast Turned Into Reality

Texbiker.net Posted on June 3, 2020 by Rick AnkrumJune 3, 2020

Third bike ride in June as I work towards my 800 mile goal. The bike ride started at 11:02 AM on the Lynskey R300 bike. I plan on riding the Lynskey R300 on tomorrow’s bike ride too. I chose a northerly route following what I label “New Caney – Gene Campbell Road” since I rode to the south yesterday. To add to the distance in the beginning I went on some extra streets in Elm Grove Village ending up riding 37.74 miles. The week now totals 106.04 miles.

Reading the Space City Weather forecast for today they mentioned afternoon showers as a possibility. Well the possibility turned into reality around mile 26 on FM 1314. I had been saying to myself the sky looked like rain but it seemed to move as I got closer. To prepare I thought of places to get out of the rain after leaving Pat’s Donuts. I thought of the Stripes store at Valley Ranch Parkway but the rain came down faster so I decided to stop at the Ace Hardware store. When I pulled under the front metal porch about 1:08 PM the rain hitting the metal was loud but slowly became quieter. I was going to stop later to eat a Blueberry Crisp Clif Bar but decided to take advantage of the rain delay and eat it while I waited. By 1:20 PM the rain slowed enough for me to roll out. I hoped the rain fell in a small area and briefly on Briar Berry Lane found some dry streets but that faded away. In front of the 2 schools the light rain returned and stayed with until I reached Kingwood Place. The streets were wet there but no more rain. The wet streets continued until I crossed Loop 494 into Kings Manor. From there to home dry streets ruled though some places the curb was damp. I finished the ride at 2:11 PM with some sunshine. As I write this 2 hours later it is raining.

Weather at the start and finish: start 85 (79% humidity, 77.3 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind calm. Finish 89 (73% humidity, 79.1 dew point), partly cloudy, wind E 10 mph. Now that summer like weather exists my attire consists of bike shorts, short sleeve jersey, and sunscreen. When I bought groceries on Monday (Walmart pickup) they substituted 2 large spray bottles of sunscreen for the 2 pack of smaller ones I ordered. I may not need to buy sunscreen again until August.

I will have an apple fritter to eat after tomorrow’s bike ride. Watch the video to see how that came about.

I biked the “New Caney – Gene Campbell Road” route for the 8th time this year; 3 times on the Lynskey R300 bike and 5 times on the Canyon Endurace bike.

Hundreds of bikes donated each year for shop owner to fix, give away

By John DeLapp | www.chron.com

eff Currier of the Slow Twitch Niche bicycle repair shop in Seabrook trues a wheel. He started a program four years ago to repair and give away bikes, and residents have donated hundreds to his program each year.

For a guy who doesn’t sell bicycles, Jeff Currier watches an awful lot of bikes leave his repair shop with new owners.

That’s because Slow Twitch Niche, 1506 Main, Seabrook, is the home of a unique bicycle donation program.

“People will come up with a load of bikes, or sometimes an …
