About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Added PSI, Rolling Studio, Changing Weather and A Roman Forest

Texbiker.net Posted on May 27, 2020 by Rick AnkrumMay 27, 2020

The Lynskey R300 rolled out the driveway at 10:49 AM to begin the bike ride on the “New Caney – Roman Forest – Valley Ranch” route. This was the third time I biked the route in 2020 and the first time riding the Lynskey R300. The ride traveled 42.37 miles pushing the week’s total to 75.93 miles and the month to 810.28 miles. Year to date I biked 3,309 road miles and 542 Zwift miles. This puts me in a favorable spot for a 200+ mile week if the weather cooperates. The two rest days helped my legs. A summary of the three rides on this route. (click images to enlarge them)

5-27-2020 YTD Bike Ride Summaries New Caney Roman Forest Valley Ranch

Weather for the bike ride started perfect but as the ride progressed clouds began to gather in the west. some dark clouds appeared near the 2:03 PM finish but I made it home dry. Weather during the bike ride: start 86 (56% humidity, 68.4 dew point), a few clouds, wind SW 7 mph. Finish 89 (55% humidity, 70.6 dew point), partly cloudy, wind W 6 mph. I wore sunscreen, shorts and a short sleeve jersey and felt comfortable the whole bike ride. Because of the ride length and warmth I used the CamelBak for water and it was good having cold water up to the finish.

Before the ride I squeezed the tires on the Lynskey and they felt like they could use air so I pumped them up to about 83 psi. I felt the difference with the bumps a little harsher but when I put pressure on the pedals the bike glided forward easily.

Another ride to work on the audio for the video. Before breakfast I watched a YouTube video about the GoPro mic adapter which comes with no instructions. From the video I made some adjustments to my setup. I changed the mic from “standard mic+” to “standard mic”. Mic + raises the mic pickup by 20 db which I think caused the scratchy sounds in my video. I also change the “raw auto” from high to medium. I am not sure what raw audio is but I changed it anyway. According to the YouTube video raw auto is recorded in a separate file but I haven’t seen that file. The verdict is in: those changes made a big difference in the audio. The scratches are gone and the sound is clear even when I ride into the wind. I will look at getting a “dead cat” wind muff to help. I put the mic on the CamelBak chest strap which seems to be a good spot. The Lynskey GoPro and mic adapter setup is quite different from the Canyon Endurace because I use a dual GoPro finger mount to hold the GoPro and the PowerPod. Some pictures of the setup.

  • 5-27-2020 GoPro Mic Adapter PowerPod Cluster-3

I may buy another GoPro frame that houses the mic adapter to organize the setup eliminating the Velcro strap and dangling mic adapter. A rolling studio is hard to get right.

By Jay R. Jordan | www.chron.com

A bicyclist and an innocent driver are dead after they were both struck by a man fleeing police on the wrong side of the road late Monday night.

Simon Cheng. The deputy tried to pull the driver over, but he allegedly sped off south along Veterans Memorial.

Joggers accuse man of gropings, lewd conduct on Houston trails

Nicole Hensley | www.houstonchronicle.com

Police are looking for a man accused of stalking and groping female joggers — as well as exposing himself to them — throughout central Houston, according to court records.

Mark Lee Thames, 49, faces indecent assault and exposure charges in connection with a string of lewd incidents involving at least four different women — one of whom said he grabbed her last month in Midtown.

One of the women recently told investigators that a man groped her while she was jogging in the 2300 block of Bagby on the morning of April 30. Last …

Two Days Off, Joint Filler, Great Weather Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 26, 2020 by Rick AnkrumMay 26, 2020

I took two days off from biking before resuming today. I waited for the streets to dry off from the early morning rain and started the ride at 11:24 AM. Choosing the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route I biked 33.57 miles. I will need to ride longer distances on a couple of days if I want to bike 200+ miles this week. May now totals 767.91 miles. Today was the fifth time I rode this route in May. Below is the month’s summary and goals status.

  • 5-26-2020 May Ride Summary Atascocita Walden Huffman
  • 5-26-2020 SportTracks Current Goals Status

Weather included rain during the night and early morning but I trusted the forecast that the rain would leave. The rain stopped before 8 AM and by the time I started biking the streets looked like it had not rained. At first it was a little chilly as I wore shorts and a short sleeve jersey but the sun came out and warmed me up after a few miles. Weather during the bike ride: 76 (78% humidity, 68.9 dew point), partly cloudy, wind variable 5 mph. Finish 85 (60% humidity, 69.8 dew point), partly cloudy, wind W 9 mph. The light wind did not pose a problem most of the time but biking back to Kingwood on Kings River Drive into a headwind was hard until I turned north on W. Lake Houston Parkway.

In Walden I saw a fellow church member outside working so I stopped to talk. He was doing some chores before it heated up. The conversation came around to driveway joint filler and he showed me a piece of plastic he put in a seam in his driveway. Maybe another fix it project for me to try.

The mic in the video still scratches but not quite as bad as the previous video. I moved the mic to my helmet strap below my chin. Next ride I will move it to the side some. Maybe I need to learn how to do voice over.

Bikin’ Shorts – The Rides of June

Bikin Mike | bikinmike.com

Small towns and communities have supported our cycling habits since the 80s. It’s time for us to support them and say "thank you".

I remember when I discovered the North Texas Cycling Community in 1987 at the Hotter’N Hell in Wichita Falls. As 1987 rolled into 1988, I discovered that many other communities supported cycling by putting on these things called "bicycle rallies". I had begun cycling in 1974, but most of my miles were on my own or with a small group of friends up until 1987.

In 1988, I provided mechanical/technical support for the Richardson Bike Mart at rallies in Tyler, Muenster, Italy, Paris, Stephenville, Cleburne, Crowley, Waco and Wichita Falls. In some years I provided support at 25 rides – and those rides have gone on year after year since then.

I learned how much labor and planning goes into these rides, how complicated they are to manage and how much they impact these small towns and communities. I also …

… My June Ride Plans*

Yes, I know that the H’NH has officially been cancelled and turned into a Virtual Ride. I still plan to be there on August 29th and will ride the 100k route with my friends. Here are our ride plans for June. I hope this gives you some ideas that will keep you in the saddle and staying healthy. …

COVID-19 has brought bike craze through Amarillo

By Courtney Tate | www.newschannel10.com

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – The Owner of Sun Adventure Sports Shop says as soon as the Shelter-in-Place order went into effect in Amarillo, bicycle shop sales increased dramatically.

“It started here in Amarillo when the quarantine hit. We started getting bombarded on bike sales, repairs, used bikes, basically anything with two wheels. It was either crazy or just trying to get people back on bikes with repairs," said Nugget, owner of Sun Adventure Sports Shop.

Bicycle shop owners are now calling this a “bike craze,” as the quarantine has influenced many residents to …
