WICHITA FALLS, Texas (TNN) – During the self quarantine, it may be tough for some to get out to get food or groceries.
The MSU-Texas cycling team has been delivering groceries to anyone in need during their bike rides throughout the pandemic.
“It’s primarily senior citizens like one person ran to Walmart, then somebody just wanted Whataburger and was worried about getting around,†said MSU Cycling Coach Charlie Zamastil.

Once my spring semester ended, I started working full time at the bike shop. Having never worked full time before, particularly outside in the heat and on my feet all day (my previous job was the same so I’m no stranger to these conditions, but I was working half the time), it has been incredibly exhausting and I just don’t have the energy or motivation to do anything, and I haven’t been doing the things I love to do and even though I’ve been working, these last 2 weeks have felt incredibly unproductive. I hate that feeling and I want to get back into the groove, plus I have other side projects I wanna work on too so I need to find a solution that allows me to ride as much as I want, run enough to build and maintain fitness and finish the 1000k, work a full time job, and develop this blog and other side gigs I want to …
May is recognized as National Bike Month. Established in 1956, National Bike Month is a chance to show the benefits of bicycling and a way to encourage more people to give biking a try!
In a normal year, Bike Month is kicked off here on campus in May with our annual Bike to UT Day. Bike to UT Day has historically been celebrated by handing out breakfast to those biking into campus and holding afternoon cycling festivities on Speedway Plaza. May usually offers the chance to promote various events and organizations around Austin and campus who are encouraging people to get out and get riding.

When I set out on today’s bike ride I had three goals: ride enough miles for the week to total 200+ miles, leave early to see other cyclists along the route, and test the new GoPro mic setup. I accomplished all three of those. I biked 31.34 miles making the week’s total 208.51 miles. The month totals 734.35 miles, 74 miles above my goal. I saw many other cyclists, most of them are in the video but a few surprised me before I could record them. The new mic set improved my voice level but I think the mic position and movement while I rode added scratches maybe from rubbing the jersey zipper. I will move the mic to my helmet strap below my chin on the next ride to see if that helps.
In the video I said the route I planned on biking but I changed it by not going through Walden on the way back to Kingwood. The route became “Atascocita – Huffman – Atascocita” rather than “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden”. The 8:27 AM start would have been earlier except for pre-ride issues. I finished the bike ride at 10:53 AM which helped me be on time for an appointment later.
Humidity didn’t have time to go down with the 8:27 AM start so I sweated quickly. Shorts and short sleeve Texbiker.net jersey were the attire. Weather during the bike ride: start 82 (88% humidity, 78.3 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 13 mph. Finish 89 (71% humidity, 78.7 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 10 mph. The wind felt good when I stopped on Old Atascocita Road for some of the video clips. I was in the country with all of the smells in the air.
For some reason I got my average speed up quickly to 13 mph and then to 14+ mph and held it above 14 mph until I returned to Kingwood. Long stretches of uninterrupted biking help do that.
Memorial Day weekend and some potential for rain is a good time to take off from biking for two days. This will give my legs some rest.
