About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

How Do You Stay Inside With Weather Like This?

Texbiker.net Posted on May 18, 2020 by Rick AnkrumMay 18, 2020

Great start this week biking. I hit the road at 10:46 AM biking the “Kingwood – SH 242 – Kingwood” route. By the time I finished at 1:41 PM I rode 36.32 miles. This was the fourth time to ride this your in 2020 all on the Canyon Endurace CF SLX bike. The Canyon odometer turned to 16,644 miles with this ride.

5-18-2020 YTD Ride Summary Kingwood SH 242 Kingwood

This week the temperature will heat up into the 90’s with lots of clear sky. Today’s weather while I rode: start 87 (52% humidity, 67.5 dew point), fair, wind NE 5 mph. Finish 90 (42% humidity, 63.4 dew point), fair, wind variable 4 mph. I wore a new pair of Bellwether Endurance Gel shorts and a short sleeve jersey. Not battling a headwind made pedaling nice. I built my average speed up to 14.5 mph and held it there until I got back to Kingwood Drive.

Today’s video lasts 41 seconds showing highlights of the bike ride. I created it using the GoPro app on my phone.

Some wildflowers are holding on along the US59 frontage road headed north to FM 1314 thanks to lots of sunshine and just enough rain. I saw one other serious cyclist as I rode in Oakhurst but he surprised me before I could turn the GoPro on. The 3 second delay after I push the record button requires me to spot things in advance. I use the QuikCapture mode to save the GoPro battery. The helmet mount is what I used today. My new mic shipped today.

Two Valley priests bicycled for rain, and it poured

Matthew Wilson | www.themonitor.com

McCOOK — Revs. Juan Manual Salazar and Greg Labus hopped on their bikes around 8 a.m. Friday morning, intending to ride from Immaculate Conception Catholic Church here to San Isidro Catholic Church as a pilgrimage made in prayer for rain.

At a glance, two priests pedaling through the countryside doesn’t have anything to do with the weather. One might even consider it a laughable thought that the men really intended to bring in a stormfront by biking 21 miles.

When Saturday morning rolled around, however, the priests’ mission seemed much less …

Transportation Services to launch annual bicycle round-up May 20

Jayme Blaschke | news.txstate.edu

Transportation Services will launch the annual Texas State University bicycle round-up May 20.

The bicycle round-up is an annual collection of abandoned bicycles on campus. A bicycle will be considered abandoned if it is parked for more than a week in the same place on campus without moving, after it has been issued an abandonment notice.

Transportation Services understands that with the move to remote instruction mid-semester, many students may have left campus without making bike accommodations. Students wishing to reclaim bicycles from storage should be prepared to provide at least one of these items: …

Open Call for TxDOT Bicycle Advisory Committee Candidates

brazoscyclists.org

TxDOT is currently seeking candidates for the state’s Bicycle Advisory Committee (BAC). TxDOT’s BAC is made up of Texas bicycling community representatives, not affiliated with TxDOT, who are interested in advancing the consideration of bicycling and walking as part of transportation planning and development within Texas.

TxDOT and the Texas Transportation Commission strive for a committee that is geographically balanced, professionally diverse, and representative of the growing and diverse Texas population. To identify a …

I Made It But Not By Much

Texbiker.net Posted on May 17, 2020 by Rick AnkrumMay 17, 2020

I made it but not by very many miles. With today’s bike ride on the “Atascocita – Waden – Huffman” route of 32.81 miles my total for the week came in at 205.4 miles. I biked 6 weeks in a row of 200+ miles and since the week of March 9th 9 of the 10 weeks hit 200+ miles. Another mileage mark hit with the Lynskey R300 bike now at 1033 miles after today’s bike ride. Just for more miles May totals 525.84 miles, 135 miles left to reach May’s goal of 660 miles. A summary of this week’s rides.

5-17-2020 Week Bike Rides Summary

“Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” numbers 16 times so far in 2020, one of my most frequent routes. A summary of the rides on this route year to date.

5-17-2020 YTD Ride Summaries Atascocita Walden Huffman

At the 1:46 PM start of the ride the wind was from the NW at 10 mph which helped me ride to the south and east most of the time. I knew the return ride from Huffman would face a headwind but I didn’t know the wind would increase from the NW to 17 mph with 23 mph gusts. Before I finished at 4:17 PM I thought my legs were just tired from the ride and not eating much but when I saw how strong the wind became I gave my legs credit for powering me home, bonk or not. The PowerPod charts show how the wind came into play during the bike ride.

5-17-2020 PowerPod Ride Charts

The second chart from the top shows how the wind affected the bike ride. When the blue area is below the white line a tailwind exists and when the blue area is above the white line a headwind exists. Spikes of blue represent the gusts. Weather during my bike ride: start 83 (64% humidity, 69.4 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind NW 10 mph. Finish 85 (60% humidity, 69.8 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind NW 17 mph gusts 23 mph. I wore a new pair of Bellwether Endurance Gel Shorts (and retired a pair I first used 9/23/2018) and a short sleeve jersey to enjoy the cool wind and sun.

Ride of Silence – North Austin 5.20.2020

Red Falcon | bicycleaustin.info

The North Austin Ride of Silence is on again this year, but limited to me and the people I already share airborne water droplets with everyday. This is the recommendation of the organizers (http://www.rideofsilence.org/main.php). I’m not sure if Social Cycling is doing anything downtown this year, but I guess anyone who wants to …
