About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

We Are Running Out Of Bikes

By Travis Engel | www.bikemag.com

But the coronavirus boom isn’t all to blame

Two months ago, bike shops were facing the same challenge as every other business: Stay above water when it seems the whole world is drowning. Many were preparing for a sort of hibernation, including putting a halt to the often huge speculative restocking orders that happen that time of year. For most shops, that hibernation lasted about a week. Then suddenly, bikes started selling like toilet paper, a phenomenon we just recently covered. Now, two months later, the world’s supply of new bikes is running out. Like toilet paper. …

But I Would Bike 500 Miles, And I Would Bike 500 More

A Dude Abikes | adudeabikes.com

Does it surprise you that I’m still riding my bicycle around 17 miles a day, which totals 500 for the month? It surprises me a little, even though I’m the one who decided to “make it so.” That’s because it’s a lot of effing work. Like most everyone, I’m having to deal with how our long international nightmare is impacting life. And a big part of my life is bicycling. I also had to move residences mostly by myself, have been having knee pain, had a fall and although minor the road rash just finally healed, and I am not exactly …

Get on a Bike, Then Get Some of Dallas’ Best Beer

PHILIP KINGSTON | www.dallasobserver.com

The need to distance during the COVID-19 pandemic combined with people working from home or not working at all, combined with cabin fever, has created an unprecedented demand for trails and parks.

Major cities around the world have responded to this demand by closing streets to automotive traffic to make more room for pedestrians and bicycles with appropriate distancing. …

Bike sales jump in area as more people flock to trails for exercise during COVID-19

by Jim Lefko | news4sanantonio.com

SAN ANTONIO – If it seems like you’re seeing more people cycling around San Antonio during the pandemic, it’s may be because bike sales are way up.

That’s a huge benefit to a city that struggles with obesity. But there might a downside too.

"Bike sales are certainly up. but it’s a different type of bike," says Brian Mikiten, owner of Crossroads Bikes ."We’re seeing a lot of …

After canoe trip, Franklin High trio reunites for bike ride to Alamo

By Brooke Wanser | www.williamsonherald.com

In a sequel to their canoe trip from the Harpeth River to the Gulf Coast, three Franklin High School graduates have begun a bicycle trip to the Alamo, in San Antonio, Texas.

Job Dooley, Jonah Albert and Luke Saulters set off on a canoe trip last summer, just days after graduating from Franklin High. They gained a local following as they canoed down the Harpeth to Mobile, Alabama, over the span of a month.

Saulters and Albert went on to attend …

Feeling Misty, Then Sunny, But No Audio Biking to FM 1485

Texbiker.net Posted on May 13, 2020 by Rick AnkrumMay 13, 2020

Due to an afternoon appointment for a haircut I started today’s bike ride a little earlier than usual for a weekday with wheels rolling at 10:40 AM. I chose a slightly shorter route with “Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood” riding 31.65 miles. This is about a mile longer than the typical bike ride on this route. So far in 2020 I rode this route 8 times, 5 times on the Canyon Endurace CF SLX and 3 times on the Lynskey R300. Today I rode the Lynskey R300. A summary of those bike rides below.

5-13-2020 YTD Ride Summaries Kingwood FM1485 Kingwood

Weather at the beginning looked iffy with a fine mist off and on until I reached Woodridge Forest. After that some of the roads were damp on the edge but dry where traffic traveled. I washed the Lynskey after the ride because of the grit and mud picked up on the damp to wet shoulders, mostly north of Community Drive. Overall weather during the bike ride: start 77 (90% humidity, 73.8 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 8 mph. Finish 86 (64% humidity, 72.4 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 10 mph. Today I wore shorts and a short sleeve jersey, no long sleeve jersey this time, and I felt comfortable. Probably the light wind and higher humidity helped my comfort. By the time I finished at 1:17 PM the threat of rain vanished. I have an opportunity to ride 200+ miles this week if the weather cooperates.

I continue to search for an audio solution in the video. Today I used the GoPro, the GoPro mic adapter, and a USB-C microphone. This did not work except for one clip when I slowed down on Loop 494 at the bridge closed barriers. That is why the video has music instead of my voice. I will continue to try different settings. I think I need to select which mic picks up the sound.

With the earlier start and shorter route I passed Pat’s donuts in Porter before they closed. I tried to resist but one of the two remaining apple fritters called my name so I stopped and bought it. I waited until after finishing the bike ride to eat it. I was hoping they would give the other one since closing time was about 40 minutes away but not today.

Some Drivers Express Frustrations as More Cyclists Hit Streets

By Meg Bonacorsi | spectrumlocalnews.com

AUSTIN, Texas — You’ve probably noticed a lot more people are out and about walking the dog, jogging or taking their bikes for a spin, but it’s causing tension with some drivers.

Austin recently spent about $4 million to improve the North Shoal Creek neighborhood for cyclists, but not everyone agrees. A 50-year resident who chose to remain anonymous isn’t a fan of the changes.

"Everybody was getting along with everybody. There was never an incident or accident or anything. I’ve seen more cases now that …

This Article is not correct – Tailwind Bicycles to relocate, change name to Kingwood Bicycles in June

By Kelly Schafler | communityimpact.com

Tailwind Bicycles will soon relocate from its current location at 2714 W. Lake Houston Parkway, Ste. 120, Kingwood, to 4003 Rustic Woods Drive, Ste. D. The store will close May 17 at its current location and reopen at the new location in early June. While the current store repaired bikes and offered a large retail selection, owner Ben McQuade said the new store will focus more on repairs than new bike sales to meet the needs of the community. The shop will also have its name changed to Kingwood Bicycles. www.kingwoodbicycles.com

Headwind, Tailwind Correction, Overcast Sky, Loop to Huffman

Texbiker.net Posted on May 12, 2020 by Rick AnkrumMay 12, 2020

I rode south again today following what I call the ” Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route. Starting at 11:07 AM riding my Canyon Endurace CF SLX bike I felt better about riding through the bridge repair section on W. Lake Houston Parkway at the San Jacinto river. The walkway is closed on the northbound bridge but several people are walking on the southbound walkway even though my request to the City of Houston to mow the brush at both ends was rejected. I wouldn’t be surprised if someone took a Weedeater or brush cutter and cleared them out.

Today’s bike ride covered 34.39 miles, a little longer than usual as I changed the early part of the route. The week now totals 70.45 miles, May stands at 390.89 miles towards my 660 mile goal, and year to date I biked 2890 road miles and 542 Zwift miles. I rode this route 16 times so far in 2020. An interesting chart from Golden Cheetah shows the breakdown of rides this year by distance and bike. Today’s route occupies the largest block with my 2 bikes.

In today’s video not many bikers appeared so I included some other people. As I rode on the WLHP bridge I took video clips, The ride south is wider than the ride north. Watch the video to check what was going on around me.

The blue sky left and overcast clouds moved in as the wind shifted to the SE. At the beginning of the ride I felt a couple of rain drops but that was all. Rain might drop in later in the day. With the clouds I wimped out and wore a long sleeve jersey, short sleeve jersey, and shorts. What it was like while I biked: start 79 (74% humidity, 69.6 dew point), overcast, wind SE 17 mph. Finish 83 (66% humidity, 70.1 dew point), overcast, wind SE 15 mph. The wind was tough getting to FM 2100 and Old Atascocita Road. I struggled to get my average speed to 13 mph. Once I moved to FM 2100 northbound the tailwind helped me boost the average speed to 13.5 mph until I got back into Kingwood.

Yesterday in my daily biking news I included an article about Tailwind Bicycles closing on May 17th, moving to Rustic Woods in Kingwood and changing their name to Kingwood Bicycles. Today’s ride went in front of Tailwind Bicycles so I decided to stop and ask about the changes. It turns out Community Impact got the story all wrong. Tailwind Bicycles is not closing. One of the people at Tailwind is leaving to open Kingwood Bicycles on Rustic Woods Drive. Nice to know.
