About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Video: Tyler bike stripes project virtual meeting scheduled for Monday

By Alex Leroux | www.kltv.com

TYLER, Texas (KLTV) – An online virtual public meeting will be held by the city of Tyler on Monday, May 11, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., to present a formal hearing and presentation for proposed bike lane striping on roadways.

“This has been long in development and this is the last step before we finalize design,” said Cameron Williams, the traffic engineer in charge of the project. “The plan is to go out to bid in August, with this project, and hopefully have some bike lanes on the ground by the fall.”

The City of Tyler is reaching the final stages of it’s bike stripes project.

“We’re going to be providing information on …

The Tyler Bike Stripes project plans to begin adding new bike lanes to the city by September, and they want your input.

TYLER, Texas — The City of Tyler will hold a virtual meeting to allow residents to debate plans for new bike lane expansions.

While the city does not have many bike lanes, city leaders hope a new proposal will make travel a little safer for bicyclists.

“It has a combination of bike lanes," Cameron Williams, City of Tyler Traffic Engineer, said. "And also buffered bike lanes and routes."

The city’s current plan includes …

HazMat At Railroad Tracks, Blue Sky Above, AC Unit Needed

Texbiker.net Posted on May 11, 2020 by Rick AnkrumMay 11, 2020

Started the week off biking on my “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route. This is a route I ride often especially with the bridge repair on my southerly rides. (See the YTD ride summaries below) Wheels down at 11:15 AM and finished at 2:06 PM. I rode 36.06 miles on my Canyon Endurace CF SLX bike hopefully setting up a 200+ mile week.

5-11-2020 YTD Rides Summary New Caney Tavola Valley Ranch

Before the ride the AC repairman came to inspect my 22 year old unit. The reason for the visit was find out why it is not putting out cold air and the cause is the Freon is down 2 pounds. This means the system has a leak. Due to the age it is time to replace the system before the summer heat arrives. The furnace is even older with 35 years on it. It will be replaced too.

Weather while I biked to Tavola and back: start 81 (39% humidity, 53.9 dew point), a few clouds, wind E 10 mph. Finish 83 (39% humidity, 55.4 dew point), partly cloudy, wind variable 6 mph. As the sun rose this morning the temperature warmed up from 57. I wore shorts and a short sleeve jersey. At the beginning I felt a slight chill when I rode in the shade but once I warmed up no problem staying warm. With the wind from the east I didn’t fight a headwind or tailwind most of the bike ride. Nice!

Riding north on the frontage road after crossing FM 1314 I heard the train horn to the east but it sounded different. I thought by the time I got to Loop 494 which parallels the tracks the train would be long gone but it was still moving south. When I came to the Roman Forest Blvd. crossing I saw why it took time for the train to travel south. Watch the video to see why.

Mother’s Day Memories Under A Blue Sky Bicycling Kingwood Streets

Texbiker.net Posted on May 10, 2020 by Rick AnkrumMay 10, 2020

Wrapping up the week’s bike rides I chose to ride the Kingwood streets traveling 22.63 miles. I started at 1:41 PM after getting home from church and a trip to the attic to light the water heater and finished at 3:27 PM. With today’s miles the week’ bike rides came in at 224.02 miles. Since the week ending March 9th except for 1 week I rode 200+ miles or 8 out of the last 9 weeks. I was able to reach the 200+ miles this week with 6 bike rides. A summary of the week’s bike rides are below. I rode the Lynskey R300 bike today.

5-10-2020 Week Bike Rides Summary

For Mother’s Day the weather was picture perfect with a bright blue sky. When I got up this morning the temperature was in the mid 50’s but by ride time it warmed up so that all I needed to wear was shorts and a short sleeve jersey. Weather while I biked around Kingwood: start 78 (49% humidity, 57.2 dew point), a few clouds, wind E 8 mph. Finish 81 (45% humidity, 57.6 dew point), a few clouds, wind E 12 mph.

Several groups of people seemed to be celebrating Mother’s Day. In Woodridge Forest one home had a large BBQ pit trailer cooking away in the driveway. At another home a group of people sat in lawn chairs under a large tree in the front yard. On Cedar Knoll Drive a family of 6 or 7 walked along the side of the street. Driving home from church numerous restaurants’ drive through lanes had cars waiting. In Town Center one restaurant seated people outside, separated safely. For me, Mother’s Day this year is different. My wife passed away in 2019 and my mother passed away in 2013 so the mother’s in my life are no longer around but their memories are.

Year to date biking surpasses all previous years at this point with 3,361 miles. The graph below compares biking miles since 2011.
