About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Fort Davis to Iraan TX: So glad it’s not raining

Thursday March 5, 2020, 111 miles (179 km) – Total so far: 1,095 miles (1,762 km) Back to better weather! Upper 60s and sun makes for much better riding. And almost no wind too! Stayed on frontage road to I-10 all day today until I made it to the 190 split. Iraan was only 15 from there. The theme for the day was wildlife. I saw more animals today (mostly dead, but hey…) than I have the entire trip so far. The only real encounter with live animals came just before I turned onto 190. 3 wild pigs blocked the frontage road ahead of me. I stopped, took a picture of course, and …

Iraan Tx to Eldorado Tx: Who said Texas was flat?

Friday March 6, 2020, 80 miles (129 km) – Total so far: 1,175 miles (1,891 km) Today was all about the hills. Lots of them! Beautiful weather for a second day was welcomed, not as much the headwinds. Ended up only doing 80 miles and ending up in Eldorado for the night First flat of the trip today. Happened when I stopped for a sandwich and rode into the grass off the shoulder. A giant thorn from a mowed piece of bush went right into the tire. I was setup tubeless so I pumped the tire back up and hopped it would seal… Rode for about …

Next Steps for the St. Johns Bikeway in Austin, Texas

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.com

Last month your faithful cyclist and semi-regular bicycle activist (moi) attended a City of Austin open house. Today they sent out a follow-up notice, and I’m sharing it with you. It has some interesting approaches to making this street safer, but they aren’t a done deal yet. We have to make sure Austin doesn’t give up and cede the road back to cars. Even if you don’t live here, you might find the way they (we) do things here to improve safety for walkers and bicyclists interesting.

Sorry, with coronavirus rearing its ugly head, even leading to the cancellation of South by Southwest for the first time in its 34-year history, I should say …

Baytown YMCA Gator Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on March 7, 2020 by Rick AnkrumMarch 7, 2020

Getting up at 5:05 AM to go the ride is not my most favorite thing but throw in 39 degrees and windy, whoa! I left home at 6:31 AM, about a minute late, I arrived at Lee College around 7:20 AM to 48 degrees which felt colder with the wind. Before going to the gym to pickup my ride number and T-shirt I walked around the parking lot handing out Texbiker business cards. I gave away all I brought with thank yous from each person.

I decided using my phone for a bike computer is not my thing. The phone battery runs down before the rides ends (I switched to a backup phone at rest stop 3), the phone mount on the Canyon did not want to stay straight and at each bump it twisted, and the data display options are not what I want. So until my new computer arrives on Monday I will be Zwifting.

Weather dominated today’s bike ride and I dressed accordingly: shorts, leg warmers, long sleeve thermal jersey, long sleeve regular jersey, wind jacket, full finger gloves, and in case it warmed up half finger gloves but they never got used. At rest stop 2 I looked at the weather and saw the 17 mph wind, no wonder it was so hard pedaling but I didn’t see the power output on the phone. I started rolling at 8:05 AM and finished at 12:11 PM. Thank goodness for the Chick-Fil-A sack lunch at the finish. I sat in the Jeep after putting the Canyon Endurace away and ate the warm sandwich, Lays chips, and 2 Oreo cookies. Now I could drive home.

The video compresses the 51 mile ride into 16 minutes while it took me 3:31:59 to ride it.

The SportTracks activity page lacks power and cadence when I switched phones because I didn’t connect those sensors. I thought I did connect them at the rest stop.

The Strava ride activity covers two because of the split when I changed phones.

HCHSA Insider: BXM racer Tanner Sebesta won’t let ‘freak accident’ slow him down

Boy, The Phone Is A Big Bike Computer Screen! And A Flat Tire?

Texbiker.net Posted on March 6, 2020 by Rick AnkrumMarch 6, 2020

Got a phone mount to put on the Canyon Endurace bike while I wait for the replacement Wahoo Elemnt Bolt to arrive on Monday. I went to Tailwind Bicycles in Kingwood to buy the mount. They had three to choose from and I got the Delta Smartphone Holder XL. The smaller one was long enough but not wide enough to hold my Pixel 3XL.

The Holder XL has two mounting options: handlebar or stem cap. Neither of those work on the Canyon because of the aero shape of the handlebar and the unusual shape of the stem cap and bolt assembly. My solution: remove the insert from the out front Wahoo computer mount and put the stem mount there.

Another potential place was to turn the out front mount over and attach the phone mount to the GoPro fingers but that required too many changes to revert back once the Bolt arrives.

With the phone mount in place I got ready to ride and left at 12:52 PM to follow the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route. With the phone out front I was sure to press the start button today at the beginning of the ride.

Weather during the bike ride: start 69 (26% humidity, 32.8 dew point), a few clouds, wind N 10 mph. Finish 72 (20% humidity, 28.6 dew point), partly cloudy, wind N 8 mph. I can’t believe the low humidity today. I hoped it would warm up so I left the leg warmers at home and wore shorts, long sleeve thermal jersey, regular gloves, and a jacket. I felt comfortable the whole ride except for a few times in the shade when a gust of cool wind hit.

The ride went well until about 23 miles when I ran over some sharp object with my rear tire with a big jolt. At the time I thought a pinch flat on the Lake Houston causeway was coming but the tire didn’t seem to suffer but by the time I got to 28.33 miles it was obvious a pinch flat happened. I thought this might be coming as I turned right off Kings River Drive and stayed on the greenbelt to cross the river rather the road like I normally do. About 200 feet later the tire wobbled and I reached down and squeezed it, flat tire. With all of the noise from passing traffic I decided to walk across the bridge to Kings Harbor on the north side to find a quiet place to fix the tire. It was a long mile but I made it. I pulled the tube out, pumped up the tube several times to locate the hole which was tiny and stuck a screw in it to mark the spot. The glue in the patch kit concerned me as I squeezed some out but there was enough to cover the area where the patch would go. I applied the patch, pumped the tube up and it held air. Back in the tire and mounted on the rim I pumped it up to hard enough that I couldn’t squeeze the tire. With the wheel back in the Canyon I put all of the parts in their place and dropped the tube of glue in the trash. While I was on the bridge one cyclist stopped to offer a tube or help but I told him I was okay. Two other bikers passed but didn’t stop.

Back on the bike I head to the finish. All went well until about 1/2 mile from the end the computer screen went black; the phone’s battery was dead. I hope that doesn’t happen tomorrow during the Gator Ride. I will save the battery until the ride begins. I finished the ride at 4:14 PM, later than planned thanks to the flat. Second ride in a row where the phone app didn’t get to record the complete ride.
