About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Abilene ranked No. 2 in Carinsurance.org study of most dangerous cities for cyclists

Laura Gutschke | www.reporternews.com

The five bicyclist fatalities in Abilene from 2014-17 make the city the second most dangerous for cyclists in the country, according to new report by carinsurance.org.

Researchers analyzed fatality data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System for those years and population data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey, according to a news release from carinusrance.org.

In the study, the cities were ranked by the number of cyclist deaths in relation to the …

Tour de Zwift: Stage 1 (D)

Texbiker.net Posted on January 12, 2020 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 12, 2020

No time to warm up at the start of stage 1 like the Zwifting I usually ride. The weather outside (overcast, 44 degrees) ruled out biking outside. I wanted to stay with a group to get the advantage of drafting. I started out around 205th position and as the raced progressed I caught groups in front of me moving up to 145th by the end of the race (259 racers showed on the ride position list).

The race traveled 10.74 miles in 28:15 and while I averaged 22.8 mph my maximum speed only came to 31.8 mph. I think that shows my speed consistency.

Strava recorded at least 3 personal records but as I scrolled down the segments listing in Strava I saw several more. Checking the list of other Strava people who rode the stage no fellow Texans appeared.

I streamed the race live on Twitch.tv/texbiker.

Tomorrow outdoor biking looks iffy with a 50% chance of rain and a high of 66 degrees.

What’s It Like to Bike 90 Days in a Row for a Total of 1,985 Miles?

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.com

My recent year-end recap, 5,633 Miles in 2019: 5,006 Biking, 627 Walking — My Longest Year Yet!, did not completely capture the immense efforts I put out to reach that biking goal. I don’t say that to brag; it’s just the fact. I began back on October 11th and up to January 8th, I rode for three months, biking every single day. I pedaled on average 22 miles per day. I can assure that is a lot of work, but if I can do it, it’s doable for many people. (For confirmation, check out my Training Log on Strava.) For more numbers and what they mean, do …

Note there are several errors in the draft map regarding existing bike lanes. There are NOT any existing bike lanes on: Spencer, Oakland, Crescent, McCormick, Jagoe, Fulton. Ector is a parking lane, not a designated bike lane. Oak St DOES have bike lane between Fulton & Ave C.

Veteran rides to raise suicide awareness

By Mark Archibald | www.corsicanadailysun.com

Every day in America, 19 veterans die by suicide.

“19 is 19 too many” said Dan Hurd, who has lost 34 friends to suicide. He attempted it three times himself and was planning a fourth before a friend got him on a bicycle, a journey Hurd credits with changing his perspective and willingness to live.

The Daily Sun was lucky enough to catch up with Hurd and Joe Hill, Texas Veterans Parade Founding Co-Chair, Monday. Hurd slowed down his …

New year, new look for Bagby Street with bike lane, wider sidewalks

Dug Begley | www.houstonchronicle.com

Bagby Street has seen better days. Now, with the new year underway, downtown-area officials are doing to the street what a lot of people promised for themselves in 2020: slimming down, fixing up and promising to put walking and biking front and center.

Beaten by flooding and traffic, the street on the western edge of downtown is home to some of the oldest infrastructure in the central business district. It is showing its age as the pavement undulates and …
