About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Koobi Saddle Swap Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 11, 2019 by Rick AnkrumJuly 11, 2019

Today’s bike ride got out the door earlier at 9:51 AM. I wanted to get a head start on the heat and finish before 1 PM, finishing at 12:33 PM. The ride followed my “Atascocita South – Walden – Huffman” route for a total of 34.38 miles.

I wasn’t the only biker out today. I saw the first biker on Cedar Knolls Drive in Kingwood followed by another at Kingwood High School. The second cyclist and I see each other from time to time. Number 3 was on Old Atascocita Road as we both came up over the railroad track crossing. Everyone waved back and said hello.

Weather during the bike ride: start 87 (72% humidity, 76.6 dew point), partly cloudy, wind N 7 mph. Finish 92 (67% humidity, 79.7 dew point), a few clouds, wind variable 4 mph. I am still wearing the arm sleeves for sun protection and they don’t cause a heat problem. The salt builds up above my wrists as sweat evaporates.

Last evening I swapped out saddles on the Canyon Endurace CF SLX. The Fizik saddle started to be uncomfortable and I remembered the Koobi PRS Century saddle from previous bikes was in my parts bin. I first rode the Koobi on my Motobecane Le Champion CF LTD on 10/23/2010 so it has been around for awhile. I had it repaired several years ago after a dog crash tore the side. I should have swapped out saddles months ago when the Fizik started making my butt sore. The Koobi was so much better on today’s ride. Bumps absorption and comfort were vastly improved and my sit bones aligned with the seat pad area. The bump pads made the rough pavement much easier to handle. The Fizik now moves to the parts bin.

Friday weather was questionable with Tropical Storm Barry to the east but as now not a threat to the Houston area. I plan on biking.

Tavola In The Heat Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 10, 2019 by Rick AnkrumJuly 10, 2019

More summer heat for today’s bike ride. I left at 10:22 AM to ride the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route. Weather during the ride: start 91 (68% humidity, 79.3 dew point), partly cloudy, wind calm. Finish 92 (60% humidity, 76.2 dew point), partly cloudy, wind calm.

The ride totaled 33.39 miles, a mile or so shorter than normal because I left a couple streets out to get back home in time for an appointment. I am up to 121.73 miles for the week and 335.41 miles for the month; 42% of my goal for July.

With the heat I stopped two times for ice and water; the Mobil station in New Caney and the Stripes station on FM 1314.

The last few rides I noticed some wildflowers growing along the roads and I don’t think to take photos. By now the mowers have been through once and the tall wildflowers have been cut.

I finished the ride at 1:05 PM. Biking time: 2:31:56.

Last night I replaced the Ultegra R8000 pedals on my Canyon endurace CF SLX with a new pair. I think the clipping in and out went smoother. The old pedals had 11,400+ miles on them plus a couple of crashes on the sides.

Thursday looks good for biking.
