About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Wind Tunnel Practice Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 21, 2019 by Rick AnkrumMay 21, 2019

If you need to get some wind tunnel practice this is the place. I knew it was windy outside with the trees moving around but when I looked at the NWAA app it surprised me with 36 mph gusts. I chose the “Atascocita South – Walden – Huffman” route for some variety for the first time since March 19th. Any direction with an “S” in it was a headwind. The start was at 10:52 AM.

The ride went 34.01 miles boosting May to 550.75 miles, 83% of the way to my 660 mile goal.

Other than the wind the weather agreed with biking: start 84 (74% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind S 28 mph 36 mph gusts. Finish 87 (71% humidity), overcast, wind S 15 mph 24 mph gusts. I wore shorts, short sleeve jersey, and arm sleeves. This was a good test about how hot the arm sleeves would be and they were comfortable with the wind moving through and around them.

  • Bike Ride Airport Weather Start
  • Bike Ride Airport Weather Finish

I got a sense of the wind when I stopped waiting for traffic at Old Atascocita Road and FM 2100. I put my right foot down like I usually do and a gust hit me almost pushing me over to the left. I moved my right foot out another 12″ to counter the wind. The next challenge was riding west over Lake Houston on FM 1960. The wind was so strong I shifted down one gear to push through the wind and the gusts from my left pushed me to the right. When traffic went by there was a brief relief and then I got slammed with another gust.

Finally making the right turn onto Pinehurst Trail Drive the wind shifted to a tailwind and my legs got relief. This stayed with me until I finished at 1:29 PM.

Some physical data:

  • average heart rate 123 bps
  • max heart rate 151 bps
  • average power output 133 watts
  • max power output 482 watts

Wind on Wednesday is supposed to go down some. Good biking weather.

Eastside Taco Ride (May) REDUX

by Eastside Taco Ride | www.facebook.com

May 25 Saturday at 10:30 AM – 2:30 PM The LOT Dallas 7530 E Grand Ave, Dallas, Texas 75214 We opted not to brave the torrential rains on Saturday. We’ll make up for it next Saturday.

Here’s the description for the original event: Arepa TX. It’s at Royal and Preston and I can’t even count how many times I’ve ridden past it. Then I found out that it is owned by the aunt of one of our regular Taco-Riders! Well, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to bring the taco ride in and check out her offerings!

It is just over 10 miles to tacos this month, but worry not. We are absolutely a no-drop ride. We’ll take our time and rest when we need to. We will ride rain or shine. Here is the route we’ll be on. https://goo.gl/maps/8TSTWTKXteZYphQ88

We’ll start gathering at 10:30 with kickstands going up at 11:00.

On Shore Wind Flow: 29 MPH Gusts Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 20, 2019 by Rick AnkrumMay 20, 2019

I wanted to ride at least 40 miles today so I chose the “New Caney – Roman Forest – Valley Ranch” route and went 42.09 miles. May now totals 516.74 miles, 78% of the way to my 660 mile goal for the month.

Starting the ride at 10:47 AM the weather had warmed up and I dressed accordingly: shorts, short sleeve jersey, and arm sleeves. Weather during the bike ride: start 87 (73% humidity), partly cloudy, wind SE 22 mph. Finish 87 (70% humidity), partly cloudy, wind S 16 mph gusts 29 mph. The wind was a killer though.

  • Bike-Ride-Airport-Weather-Start
  • Bike-Ride-Airport-Weather-Finish

I knew the ride to Roman Forest wouldn’t be too difficult with the wind at my right rear quarter but on the way back I figured the headwind would be tough. While it was hard biking south I was able to keep my speed high enough to improve my average speed to 14.5 mph but I didn’t keep it there. Sometimes the wind and road direction were square in my face and when that happened the average speed dropped to 14.4 mph. I managed to keep that until mile 37 when I approached Kings Manor and it dropped to 14.3 mph and settled at 13.9 mph when I finished at 1:56 PM. The starts and stops in Kingwood eat away at my average speed.

Some physical data points:

  • average heart rate: 131 bps
  • max heart rate: 159 bps
  • average power: 140 watts
  • max power: 651 watts

Tuesday the Giro d’Italia resumes so my start time may be later. Weather looks to repeat today.

Long Beach, CA to St. Augustine, FL via the southern tier

By Tony Olague | www.crazyguyonabike.com

Austin to Bastrop TX Sunday May 19, 2019, 30 miles (48 km) – Total so far: 1,141 miles (1,836 km) It was an easy ride but a bit challenging for me. The plan was for me to meet Carlos at his hotel. His first day of riding so we planned on a short ride. About a mile from Carlos’ hotel I got my first of three flats for the day. The last flat was about ten miles from Bastrop. All in all it was a great day of riding on a warm humid day.
