About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Up Hill Into a Strong Headwind Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 1, 2019 by Rick AnkrumMay 1, 2019

Up hill into a strong headwind! What a way to start May bike rides. The ride started at 11:02 AM as I set out to ride the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route. Getting May off to a good start I rode 36.16 miles toward my 660 mile goal for May. Before the ride sitting at the breakfast table with my wife I put on my shoes and got ready to leave. I said to my wife, “Let me check the weather to see if it is windy outside”. Looking at the NWAA app on my phone I wasn’t shocked when I saw it was indeed very windy. Wind was from the S at 20 mph with 29 mph gusts. Fortunately the first 17 miles of the ride was to the north so I enjoyed a tailwind most of the way to Tavola.

Weather during the bike ride: Start 85 (71% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind S 20 mph gusts 29 mph. Finish 86 (69% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind S 16 mph gusts 27 mph. My attire was shorts, short sleeve jersey with sunscreen. I am finally starting to thaw out now that the temperature is in the 80’s.

Leaving Tavola on Roman Forest Blvd. I knew the headwind was waiting for me on the trip back to Kingwood. Once I truned onto the I-69/US59 south bound frontage road the wind whipped around but held back some by the tall trees on the east side of the highway. At the FM 1485 traffic light the trees are gone and from that point on the wind was stiff. Glancing down at the Elemnt computer I saw my watts jumping to 470 and on the chart it goes to 655 as my max. I held my average speed at 14.3 mph as I rode into the wind some how. That uphill headwind happened on Valley Ranch Parkway as I rode south of the Grand Parkway. The hill isn’t steep but the headwind made it seem like it was.

After the hill the road flattens out but when I turned left onto Azalea Blvd. to go back to the frontage road I got another blast of wind all the way and my legs struggled to get power to the pedals. On the frontage road riding south the wind let up some because of the change in direction and entering Auburn Trail I was back among trees and houses.

From there to Kings Manor I had a tailwind or a headwind depending on which direction I rode. I kept my average speed at 14.3 mph until the 31 mile point when the residential streets and stop signs took their toll. I finished the ride at 1:43 PM which avoided any school traffic.

Thursday’s weather looks like more of the same and I will be on the bike.

Austin’s Driveway Series thrives after careful and steady growth

Fred Dreier | www.velonews.com

Hundreds of cyclists of all ability levels turn out for Austin’s Driveway series, which has grown steadily and sustainably since 2010.

Editor’s note: This story is part of the 2019 USA Cycling Season Guide published in the January/February issue of VeloNews magazine.

There are times when Austin’s Driveway Series criterium races feel more like a party than a bike race. Stroll through the Driveway Motorsports track on a typical race evening in the summer and you will see beer and food tents and hear the thump of rock music. Banners for the series’s sponsors Lifetime Fitness, Castelli, and Muscle Monster, flap in the breeze. As the peloton speeds by on the racetrack, crowds of racers and their families cheer on the sidelines. …

April Blows Away With 37 MPH Gusts on Today’s Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 30, 2019 by Rick AnkrumApril 30, 2019

The wind won’t let up. April fades into my memory and windy bike rides is what I think of first. I headed out at 11:37 AM on the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route to the south. This put me into the 17 mph and 28 mph gusts wind. What a way to wrap April. I biked 32.09 miles which moved April to 817.7 miles, the most miles in a month since October 2018 when I rode 1054.53 miles.

Other than the wind today’s weather was great for biking: start 82 (75% humidity), overcast, wind S 17 mph gusts 28 mph. Finish 86 (65% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind S 23 mph gusts 37 mph. That’s right! The wind was gusting at 37 mph as I finished the bike ride at 2:05 PM. Clothing wise I wore shorts and a short sleeve jersey with sunscreen.

To see how wind April has been I checked my rides and found:

22 bike ride days
12 days with wind above 15 mph
10 days with wind gusts over 20 mph

Fighting the wind every time the route turned south slowed me down. The worst place was riding over Lake Houston on the FM 1960 causeway. Biking east wasn’t as bad as going west. East bound I was shielded some by the solid concrete guardrail but west bound the wind had a clear shot at me across 5 lanes of concrete. Although the wind was from the side the gusts as I headed west pushed me around a lot. Thank goodness I wasn’t riding my Stradalli with the 55mm rims which caught the wind a lot more than the 42mm rims on the Canyon Endurace CF SLX I ride now.

Once I got to the west side of the lake the route turned to the north and a tailwind prevailed among the houses and trees. This slide show has the weather screenshots and three photos of the white cap waves on the south side of the causeway.

Just because May starts tomorrow (Wednesday) I don’t think the wind will let up. The weather forecast still looks favorable for biking so I will get May going.
