About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Gravel Guides bikepacking trip #1 was a success! Despite a less than an ideal weather forecast for the weekend we managed to dodge everything but a bit of headwind on Sunday.

Here are a few pics from Guide Extraordinaire, Jan Bennett. We will post more pics and video in the coming days as well as a full overview of the weekend. What a blast!

Monday March 25, 2019, 82 miles (132 km) – Total so far: 1,484 miles (2,388 km) One of Jo’s goals for this trip was to pedal every mile depending upon weather/wind conditions. That went out the window in a nanosecond when sister Judy offered a ride to Hondo, the halfway mark for today’s pedaling. Jo enjoyed a few extra hours of sister time at the Hondo Cafe while waiting for Happy. All was not smooth sailing for Happy as she dealt with a flat, a faulty tube stem and then a wire embedded in her tire from a …

First 2019 Spring Creek Greenway Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on March 25, 2019 by Rick AnkrumMarch 25, 2019

I set out at 11:51 AM to ride the Spring Creek Greenway for the first time in 2019. The last time I rode the greenway was October 30th 2018. I biked 47.65 miles which put me over my March goal by 35.3 miles at 620.30 miles. Now the rest of the month will be how much I go over.

Weather during while biking the greenway: start 74 (72% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind W 7 mph. Finish 86 (50% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind W 9 mph. I dressed like it would be 74 the whole ride and paid for over dressing. Attire: shorts, long sleeve jersey, and short sleeve jersey. If the greenway didn’t have as many trees as it does I would’ve been overheated by the time I exited at the US59 trailhead. The surface had damp places like it had rained before I got there with some puddles in low spots. I never felt any rain. When I checked the airport weather (not too fr from the greenway) it reported light rain, maybe the cause of the damp spots where there was an opening in the trees.

On the way to the US59 trailhead I rode through South Woodland Hills Village and saw two vintage cars which leads off the gallery of photos I took. The first one is a 1963 Ford Fairlane and the second is a 1955 Ford.

Last week at our city councilman’s town hall meeting I talked with the Houston Bike Plan people and they said a bike path along Hamblen Road is planned. The road is rough but it is only a short distance to the u-turn under I-69/US59 where I entered the Bevil Jarrell Bridge to get to the trailhead. The bridge once was US59 over the river.

I didn’t expect any major changes on the greenway but there were a couple. The first one is improved mile markers along the route. The second fixes the problem I had the first time I rode and got lost in Jesse Jones Park trying to find where the greenway went from the parking lot. A new asphalt path goes from the entrance west in Jesse Jones Park to the parking lot where it use to just disappear. Thank you!

I saw about 20 other cyclists, some of them multiple times as I rode west and passed them. Numerous walkers too which is great. The greenway is wide enough to accommodate both but sometimes coming around a corner you can be surprised. Around the 6 mile point going west a group of 6 horse riders came across the route and stopped at the water station. I have seen horses before but only one or two at a time.

After reaching the western terminus I took a couple of photos and noted this was south of the Rayford and Sawdust Roads exit on I-45 which I passed under. On the way back east I stopped at the Dennis Johnston Park to fill my water bottle and eat a quick snack.

By then it was heating up and I was glad for the shade to kind of keep me cool with the double jerseys.

Back at the I-69/US59 I rode back into Forest Cove and then Kingwood finishing the ride at 4:09 PM.

Tuesday weather forecast: sunny, high near 76, north wind 5 to 10 mph. Sounds like good bike riding.

Sunday March 24, 2019, 46 miles (74 km) – Total so far: 1,402 miles (2,256 km) We enjoyed our stays at Motel 6 in 2017 and were happy to find the lights still on for us in 2019. The birds continued squawking as we pedaled out after daybreak to head toward San Antonio. From Rt. 90, we exited about 30 miles out to begin jigging and jagging our way through the city. It was a day filled with urban riding. Happy did a great job of navigating us safely to our end destination, Jo’s sister, Judy’s home on the west side of San Antonio. …

Most Miles in a Week in 2019 Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on March 24, 2019 by Rick AnkrumMarch 24, 2019

Wrapping up the week biking I rode the “Oakhurst – Valley Ranch” route going 26.79 miles putting the week’s total at 230.47 miles, the most miles in a week so far this year. I now only need 13 more miles to reach my 585 mile for March.

Thank goodness the wind let up some from yesterday. Weather during the bike ride: start 73 (79% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind 7 mph. Finish 78 (72% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind S 10 mph. I still dressed to combat the wind chill with shorts, long sleeve jersey, and wind jacket. I felt comfortable once I warmed up and lowered the jacket zipper a little to let out the excess body hear.

Nothing out of the ordinary along the route. I started at 12:23 PM after getting home from church and finished at 2:28 PM.

Monday weather forecast calls for a high of 79, 40% Precip. / 0.03 in, PM Thunderstorms. Winds W at 5 to 10 mph. This should be good biking weather and I may try to ride the Spring Creek Greenway.
