About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Bruce and Robert’s Southern Tier Adventure

By Bruce Cline and Robert Goss | www.crazyguyonabike.com

Day 20 Marathon to Sanderson, Texas: Zues Blew On Us Big Time Saturday March 16, 2019, 56 miles (90 km) – Total so far: 1,221 miles (1,965 km) Distance – 56. Climbing Descending. – But we never got to appreciate a descent

Song of the Day – Shout out to Claudia – Nathaniel’s got this right….SOB after this wind day.

The terrain had promise for a great ride, we even started out with no wind…lasted 10 miles, then headwinds, headwinds, headwinds all day. We had to scrape for every inch, all the way into town.

Started the day with a great breakfast at the V6, part of the Gage restaurant. Very good.

Great scenery across the desert and the terrain keeps changing. We wore three layers, face masks, full booties and that north wind was still cutting. All day. Great for duck hunting, not so much for touring with wide panniers. Nonetheless, it was a good ride. The ride had a significant net descent, but we never saw it. We pedaled to get 9 mph downhill all day. Fun stuff. The …

‘Something bigger than me’: Muralist’s art speaks to the public

By Marissa Alvarado | www.dentonrc.com

Dan Black should be a frazzled mess. On his way to his Denton studio, he suffers a flat tire, remaining stranded on the side of the road for nearly an hour. Once outside his studio, he locks his keys in his car, with his car still running and his dog Konde still inside. …

… New to Denton, Dan met Kevin Marshall, the owner of Bullseye Bike Shop, who saw him drawing at a coffee shop and commissioned him to paint his first Denton mural.

“I had a space that wasn’t being used and saw the potential for him to make something really awesome out of it,” Kevin says.

Through the years, Dan has done several murals for Kevin, including images of a skull wearing a bike helmet, a hidden Yeti and a rendition of the bike shop’s signature rat. …

Day 21: Derrider to Silsbee Saturday March 16, 2019, 74 miles (119 km) – Total so far: 1,087 miles (1,749 km) Today was unremarkable in terms of sights. Slowly Crossed My Temperature Threshold Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on March 16, 2019 by Rick AnkrumMarch 17, 2019

The weather slowly approached my low temperature threshold and I rolled out at 1:16 PM, not as early as I wanted but still allowing enough time to ride the “Kingwood- Community Drive-Valley Ranch” route for a total of 27.33 miles. The time limit revolved around the start time for the UC Bearcats basketball game at 4 PM in the semi-finals game against Wichita State in the American Athletic Conference tournament. I finished the ride at 3:16 PM so I should be good.

Weather during the bike ride: start 61 (35% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind E 10 mph. Finish 63 (31% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind NE 6 mph. To combat my getting cold I wore shorts, leg warmers, thermal long sleeve jersey, short sleeve jersey, and full finger gloves. Even with all of this I felt chilly for about 15 minutes into the ride. By then I generated enough body heat to not think about the wind chill too much.

I am reaping the benefits of the new rear 11-28T cassette gearing. My pedaling and effort seemed better matched. Today I was able to improve my average speed almost the entire ride getting to 14.0 mph just as I got back to Kings Manor and then Kingwood.

The Canyon now has 8101 miles since late February 2018. The Continental GatorSkin tires have about 6000 miles on them. I probably can go another 1000 to 1500 before replacing them.

Sunday it should warm up a few degrees so I plan on continuing the quest to reach 585 miles for March. At this point I am at 342.29 miles.

Bruce and Robert’s Southern Tier Adventure

Day 18 Van Horn to Alpine: Long Day to Stay In Front Of The East Wind Thursday March 14, 2019, 101 miles (163 km) – Total so far: 1,135 miles (1,827 km) Distance – 101. Climbing 1840′ Song of the Day – Shout out to our lovely wives. Here is a song for you fitting of the midway "town" on the route…

Short Report – Bruce is Tired Tonight after after a long ride today. We crossed into the Central time zone yesterday so it has us fouled up for early starts. We deviated from the ACA Route and rode Highway 90, rather than doing the Fort Davis route and climbs. Trying to stay on schedule, but more importantly ahead of the east winds. It appears they caught us and we will be east winding it for the next few days. This means working with the maps, looking at alternate lodging and camping options. This is not particularly easy as so many places are simply out of business or are reported to be downright crappy. It is crazy to see so many …
