About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Optimistic As I Trailed the Rain Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 28, 2018 by Rick AnkrumAugust 28, 2018

Punching the start button on the Elemnt at 10:11 am I rolled away to ride the “Atascocita South – Walden – Huffman” route. The weather forecast had the chance of rain around 50% but the sky in Kingwood was mostly blue though the view was restricted by all of the trees. As the trees thinned out some I saw the saw had lots of clouds to the south and east. But that wouldn’t stop me from biking 33.66 miles today.

Weather during the bike ride: start 89 (72% humidity), mostly cloudy, Wind S 7 mph. Finish 89 (66% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind 4 mph. during the bike ride: When I rode through Atascocita South and Walden the clouds to the east looked threatening but I continued riding. Once I got to Fairlake Drive east of Lake Houston the street showed signs of recent rain with damp spots where the shadows protruded over the road. Not enough to cause a spray from the tires. I was optimistic that the rain would not fall on me today. The clouds may be the reason the temperature didn’t get into the 90’s before I ended the ride. Not long after I was inside it did jump up to 94 so I dodged the heat but not the humidity.

A brief stop at the Huffman Chevron for water and ice and I was back on the bike. The ride west was easier with a slight tailwind. To the northwest as I rode over lake Houston the clouds looked like rain. My optimism held as I made the right turn onto Pinehurst Trail. Around mile 27 a light mist appeared for a few seconds but disappeared and I thought that was the last of the rain but back in Kingwood the streets were much wetter and the clean Canyon bike now got dirty from the spray. The wet streets ended about a mile from the finish allowing the Canyon to dry off by the time I reached the nde of the ride at 12:43 pm. After opening the garage door I returned to the bike and washed it off with water. So much for my optimism.

The rain may hang around for a few days but is not certain so I plan on biking.

‘Sharrows’ point motorists toward courtesy to cyclists

by Karl Richter | www.texarkanagazette.com

Symbols recently painted on downtown Texarkana, Texas, streets do not indicate dedicated bike lanes but instead signal that drivers and cyclists should share the road.

Called sharrows—a play on “share” and “arrows”—the symbols added during recent street work have caused confusion among some drivers unfamiliar with them. But the city and local cycling enthusiasts say sharrows better Texarkana by making it more bike-friendly. …

Video: Yellow Bike Project works to get bicycles rolling again

By Spectrum News Staff | spectrumlocalnews.com

AUSTIN, Texas — Cyclists gathered at the Yellow Bike Project in East Austin to begin the daunting task of fixing hundreds of donated bikes.

There are 300 to 500 bikes currently piled in the back of a building, which came from the rideshare Ofo that left Austin.

The unique bolts, made for security, have to be changed because they are a hindrance for new bike owners. The Yellow Bike Project had to get special …

Sheehan, Ganzar claim Hotter’N Hell overall omnium titles

Jonathan Hull | www.timesrecordnews.com

Meteor X Giordana is a cycling team made up of two men.

But what Michael Sheehan and Colin Strickland might lack in quantity, they make up for in quality. There was no better example of the quality of their combined skill than at Hotter’N Hell this weekend.

On the heels of Strickland winning the HHH 100-mile road race Saturday, Sheehan picked up a fourth-place finish in Sunday’s criterium race in front of the MPEC which was …

August Mileage Goal Reached Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 27, 2018 by Rick AnkrumAugust 27, 2018

The big news on today’s bike ride: I surpassed my goal for the month (800 miles) riding 34.71 miles today boosting the month to 820.35 miles. I did this biking on the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route. With 4 more potential biking days left I should add to that number. I rolled out at 9:53 am after watching stage 3 of the Vuelta a Espana up to 74km left and will resume watching shortly.

Weather during the bike ride: start 90 (69% humidity), a few clouds, wind SW 9 mph. Finish 90 (62% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind 5 mph. Unusual for the temperature to be the same at the start and finish of the ride but the cloud cover increased keeping the sun at bay. There is a chance of rain and I think I heard some distant thunder while I put the Canyon bike up after the ride. I see the temperatures in the forecast in the lower 90’s for the next several days. Maybe this means fall is closer?

The point where I reached my goal was in Tavola where I changed the route from entering on Via Parliament to riding to Roman Forest Blvd. and circling through Tavola. I stopped at the map to check what the streets will look like in the future since some new roads have been added lately.

Exiting Tavola I stopped at the Shell station on Roman Forest Blvd. for water and ice before riding back to I-69/US59. The wind was waiting for me when I turned south on the service road. I battled it all the way to Valley Ranch Parkway where the buildings and trees slowed it down some. Bicycling south on Valley Ranch Parkway another biker came towards me from the south and from the jersey I think it was Ronnie Clark who met on a ride a few days ago. To be safe I stopped at the Stripes station to top off my water and ice before heading out for the 11+ miles to the finish. As I rode through Briar Tree and Oakhurst I saw the clouds gather with some heavy spots and thought to pedal faster in case rain approached. I finished the bike ride at 12:26 pm without rain.

More good bicycling weather on Tuesday.

College Station council puts plans for biking loop on hold

www.theeagle.com

An exclusive biking facility has been on the wish lists of some local cyclists, but the College Station City Council decided Thursday that it’s a project that’s not a high priority.

Council members discussed cyclists’ requests for a veloway during Thursday’s workshop meeting. During a June council meeting, citizens expressed a need for a safer biking option. A veloway — a flat, outdoor loop that would be exclusive to cyclists — was the …

Sunday afternoon the high temperature didn’t quite reach 100. It stopped short at 99. But for the 43 cyclists who finished the day racing on downtown streets in the men’s professional category, gallons of Powerade aren’t enough.

And that was just one of the 13 races Sunday and dozens more Friday and Saturday as part of this year’s Hotter’N Hell.
