About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Video: Major upgrades on the way for Katrina Park

by Sandra Garcia | valleycentral.com

One Hidalgo County community can expect some major upgrades to a local park.

In Penitas, Katrina Park is one of the few outdoor spaces where residents can get active despite some much-needed improvements.

Thanks to a $30,000 grant funded by The National Recreation and Park Association and the Walt Disney Company, the park will see those upgrades made to the playground and soccer fields, as well as the running trail that many frequent.

“We’re hoping to get that paved. So, it can be a lot safer for walkers, runners, mothers with strollers, or even cycling or bikes,” Andrea Valdez, with …

New TickrFit HR Monitor Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 21, 2018 by Rick AnkrumAugust 21, 2018

Today’s bike ride was on the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route heading south and east. Rollout time was 9:53 am. Weather during the bike ride: start 86 (75% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind W 9 mph. Finish 94 (57% humidity), partly cloudy, wind W 9 mph.

Ride distance was 33.52 miles bumping the week to 67.62 miles and August to 648.75 miles. I need to bicycle 152.25 miles to reach my goal for the month. At the rate I cycling I should reach my goal with some days to spare.

Yesterday I received the warranty replacement of the Wahoo TickrFit heart rate monitor and put it into service on today’s bike ride. It worked perfectly as you can see with the red chart line below in the SportTracks ride summary. Because this replaced another TickrFit I did a calibration on the PowerPod causing it to count up to 100 before it started recording the watts around 16.2 miles into the ride. I am going to check it later to see if it paired with the new TickrFit.

Nothing out of the usual during the bike ride. I stopped at the Huffman Chevron for water and ice not spending any extra time there. From there the headwind riding west was the hardest section of the ride. Near the west end of the FM 1960 causeway over Lake Houston I stopped and took these photos. You can see the summer sky and the water of Lake Houston. I like the first photo with the contrast of the Canyon red against the gray and black of the concrete wall.

Bike Ride Lake Houston

Bike Ride Lake Houston-2

After taking the photos I got back on the Canyon and continued to Atascocita Shores Drive to make my way back to W. Lake Houston Parkway and Kingwood finishing the ride at 12:28 pm. No problem with school traffic.

Wednesday could be 100 degrees so I plan on starting biking a little earlier than today.

Austin (KXAN)- – AUSTIN (KXAN) — More than 300 yellow dockless bikes are lined and stacked outside The Yellow Bike Project waiting for their future owner.

In order to make their dockless bicycles less prone to theft, Ofo equipped their bikes with non-standard equipment e.g. pentagonal axle nuts. In order to make …

School Daze Back In Session Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 20, 2018 by Rick AnkrumAugust 20, 2018

Began the week with a bike ride on the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route. Beautiful weather for biking. I rolled out at 9:53 am and cycled 34.3 miles. I am closing in on my goal for August with 615.44 miles of the 800 mile done so far.

Weather during the bike ride: start 90 (64% humidity), partly cloudy, wind SW 9 mph. Finish 95 (53% humidity), partly cloudy, wind SW 9 mph. The wind was challenging at times and I needed to produce 200+ watts to keep my speed at 16+ mph. The hardest section was in Valley Ranch with the headwind.

Today is the first day of school so I stopped and took these photos at the Tavola Elementary School. This morning when I got the newspaper the traffic was backed up on Northpark Drive probably becuase of the parents dropping children off at Kingwood Park High School.

Bike Ride Tavola School- Bike Ride Tavola School-2

As I rode the school before stopping to take the photos I heard the children yelling during their first recess of the school year. It brings back ancient memories.

After leaving Tavola I stopped at the Shell station on Roman Forest Blvd. to refill my water bottle for the ride back. This would hold me until I reached the Stripes station on FM 1314. When I got there I made a another quick stop for water and ice. Biking passed the two schools in Briar Tree I again heard children playing and the parking lot with staff cars.

I made my way back to Kings Manor and into Kingwood with my overall average speed at 14.2 mph but it wasn’t long before it decreased as the speed went down and the stops went up. I finished the ride at 12:31 pm.

More nice biking weather for Tuesday but a “cool” front might arrive with a slight increase in the chance of rain. With no pro bike races I should be able to start around the same time as today.
