About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

The Missing Cyclist and HR Monitor Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 10, 2018 by Rick AnkrumAugust 11, 2018

Back to my usual routes on today’s bike ride. I chose the “Atascocita South – Walden – Huffman” route for a little variety because it goes through a different section of Atascocita and is a mile or two longer than the other route to Huffman. I rode 32.93 miles starting at 9:59 am. By then it was 87 degrees under partly cloudy skies. Humidity was 75% causing sweat to form rather quickly after the start. The weather during the bike ride: start 87 (75% humidity), partly cloudy, wind SW 9 mph. Finish 92 (61% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind W 14 mph, gusts 17 mph.

When I first started my Tickr Fit heart rate monitor registered with the Elemnt computer but around 3/10 of mile into the ride I saw a N/A on the screen and stopped to see if I could fix it but after several attempts of pushing the only button it has, forgetting on the Elemnt and then pairing with the Elemnt noting happened. So no heart rate data during the bike ride. After I got home I think the battery was dead and it is charging now. Later I will see if that made a difference.

Biking through Walden I came to another cyclist going the opposite direction. The unusual part is the extra bike he was holding with his right hand as he rode along. He couldn’t wave but we exchanged hello as we passed. I wanted to ask if he knew he lost someone but held my tongue.

Bicycling to the east was easier with the wind and I made my way to Huffman. I stopped at the Chevron station for a short rest and to mess with the Tickr Fit again but no change. The ride summary when I stopped.

Wahoo Huffman Chevron Stop

My legs were tired and I knew I would be riding into the wind after leaving the station so I stayed about 30 minutes eating a Clif Bar and drinking a bottle of water. As I was getting ready to leave one of the store employees came out side and we talked about bikes and exercising. He lent his knife to cut a dangling thread from my rear tire that was coming from the bead. Not sure how that happens. Back on the bike I rode to the west and thought the wind was stronger than earlier. When I got home I saw that it was (see above in the ride weather).

It was better when I made the right turn onto Pinehurst Trail heading north among the trees and houses. My legs though didn’t have any reserve and I didn’t speed up much. I made my way back to Kingwood and finished the ride at 1:08 pm. There is a chance of rain this afternoon and I am glad I didn’t get caught if it happens.

Only 21.5 miles needed on Saturday’s bike ride to hit 200 miles for the week. The weather looks good early in the day and I hope to get an early start.

Tour de Tac: Bike Riders to Help Encourage Innovation and Church Planting

For more than ten years, I have been riding my bike across the Texas Conference for ministry causes. When Bishop Scott Jones, also a bike rider, and I began to talk about how to cast the vision for the creation of new faith communities, it was only natural that he and I would do this from our bikes! And to be honest, aren’t we all better when we are spending time exercising? Physically. Emotionally. And yes, even spiritually. The bike ride is …

SH 105 East, Flag Man, Chip and Seal Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 9, 2018 by Rick AnkrumAugust 9, 2018

Unusual bike ride today. I took our 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee to Martin Jeep in Cleveland, TX for a factory recall service. I figured while waiting for the service to be done a bike ride was in order. So I set out from the dealership. At first I was thinking of riding FM 1725 to the NW but when the service rep said it would only take an hour or two I went with my original route plan riding SH 105 east from Cleveland.

Starting at 8:11 am (I got up early today to be at the dealer by 8 am) I exited the dealer lot via the “back door” onto SH 105 and rode west to the bypass. I have never been on the bypass so I wasn’t sure what to expect. It is somewhat new and I hoped the shoulder would be smooth but it was chip’n seal except for the bridges over other roads. The bypass was about 5 miles long to where it rejoined SH 105 & SH 321. Lots of debris on the shoulder to go along with the roughness. Rolling roadway required extra effort at times but at least the wind was not coming from the east. At one overpass I stopped and took this photo with FM 1010 below.

Bike Ride SH105 East Cleveland

I can’t remember the last time I biked on FM 1010. Many years ago I biked from my home in New Caney north to Cleveland, east on SH 321 to Dayton and then west on FM 1960. I think it was about 80 miles. Back then I rode a Cannondale and SH 321 shoulder was chip’n seal for many miles. My teeth rattled so much from the jarring ride and my arms quivered it was a great relief to ride into Dayton and the smooth concrete streets.

Deciding to stay on SH 105 when the SH 321 split came I rode east. Wind was from behind and I didn’t notice a the time but the road tilted every so slightly down. I biked at 16 to 17 mph and got the average speed up to 15.1 mph. Setting the turnaround point at 22 miles into the ride at mile point 21.4 I came up road work with a flagger and made that the turn around point. Not looking at the map I thought SH 105 would pass nearby Liberty but after the ride I see that Moss Hill is the town I would have been closest to if I continued biking east. I stopped and talked with the flag man for a few minutes. His supervisor drove up and we talked some more with him offering me some water but I still had almost 3/4 of the bottle left so I didn’t take it. I should have. A photo of the stop and flag man.

Bike Ride SH105 East Liberty

Riding back to the west is when I discovered the up tilting road and the wind from the wind. Not far form the flag man’s station the road inclined steeply as it exited the river bed area and my pedaling slowed and effort increased. It took about a mile to get to the speed I had before riding up the riser. The shoulder was still chip’n seal although the main road was not most of the time. Traffic was heavy since this a major road to Beaumont and the passing traffic negated the wind some. When I arrived at the SH 321 junction I stopped at the Chevron station to refill my water bottle, rest for a few minutes, and eat a Clif Bar for energy. I guessed it was 7 to 8 miles from there to the Jeep dealer and I wasn’t too far off.

In the city limits of Cleveland the road was nice and smooth with freshly laid asphalt. Oh if the crew had worked on the road east of there. In downtown Cleveland I moved to the side streets to get positioned to ride to the dealer. SH 105 Business took me back to US59 and then to the dealer on the service road. I stopped the Elemnt computer at 11:07 am. Pulling in the shade I waited on the service rep to come outside which he did a few minutes later telling me the Jeep was ready to go. After he drove it around to me I loaded the Canyon bike, changed to a dry t-shirt and left to drive back home.

Back to the normal streets and roads for Friday’s bike ride. Weather continues to be hot and dry, dry at least when I am biking.
