This time of the year in southeast Texas you pay the price for starting a bike ride at 12:24 pm. I wasn’t planning on riding today but after Friday’s bike ride I only needed 18 miles to hit 200 for the week and to position me to ride 900+ for the month if I ride Monday and Tuesday. So I couldn’t pass the opportunity. It was 95 as I rolled out on the “Atascocita – Walden” route to ride at least 18 miles. By the time I finished at 2:04 pm it was 97 and I rode 22.26 miles putting the week at 204.48 miles and July at 842.92 miles.

Wind was light and didn’t pose a problem during the bike ride. Lots of sun and that equals lots of sweat. I appreciated riding in the shade whenever it came up. Trees hanging over the street are welcomed. More hot and dry on Monday and Tuesday which is why I wanted to shorten the miles needed to hit 900+ for July. No rain in sight for many days unless a stray shower happens.
SHRUGS go to … Garland-based VBikes, which couldn’t find all of the bicycles it had in Denton and simply abandoned them when company officials declined to apply for an operating permit. The city’s new bicycle-pedestrian coordinator, Marc Oliphant, took to social media for help rounding up the last of them, offering bike-friendly prizes such as T-shirts, helmets and bike lights for the trouble. VBikes are clearly marked, with silver frames and yellow wheels. Report abandoned bikes to Oliphant by calling 940-349-8954.

With cyclocross season fast approaching, one of the challenges for athletes is adding intensity to their training that prepares them for riding all-out for 30 to 60 minutes every weekend this fall. This July and August, Houston’s Bayou City Racing team came up with a way to help: short track mountain biking.
With the addition of short track to the UCI Mountain Bike World Cups, we have seen cyclocross stars shine in the short, intense races. Mathieu van der Poel seems to win every race, Ellen Noble podiumed at U.S. Mountain Bike Nationals and Pauline Ferrand-Prevot, Annika Langvad and Jolanda Neff have been regulars on the Women’s podiums. …

The goal for today’s bike was to ride at least 14.3 miles to put me at my 800 mile goal for July. I rode the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route and when I made the turn into Tavola my Elemnt computer showed 14.3 miles. Mission accomplished. The whole ride totaled 34.92 miles and the month is at 820.66 miles. To mark the moment I stopped and took these pictures.
Now I can add on to the month’s total going forward.
Weather during the bike ride: start 85 (64% humidity), a few clouds, wind W 9 mph. Finish 94 (42% humidity), a few clouds, wind 7 mph. 800 mile goal reached.
Ride started at 9:39 am and finished at 12:14 pm.
One stop at the Stripes on FM 1314 for ice and water and then back on the Canyon. Just before I arrived at Stripes a lady cyclist passed going north on Valley Ranch Parkway and we exchanged hello.
I decided to ride by the house where I had the dog chase earlier and the dog wasn’t outside. Now I can ride by there but be attentive.
Overall average speed was up 14.5 mph for most of the ride until Kings Manor and entering back into Kingwood.
No bike ride on Saturday, have another activity with my wife and relatives. Probably back biking on Monday.
