About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Large Yard Message Letters Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 20, 2018 by Rick AnkrumJune 20, 2018

Back on the bike today after some early morning rain. The rain kind of moved to the west though some dark clouds hung around in the distance. After waiting for the streets to dry off I rolled out at 12:41 pm to bike the “Atascocita – Walden – E. Lake Houston Parkway” route bicycling 29.41 miles. When I got up I was very optimistic about biking today. This is a bonus day since on Monday I figured no biking until Friday.

Weather during the bike ride: start 86 (75% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind SE 13 mph. Finish 86 (76% humidity), overcast, wind SE 16 mph. With all of the rain the humidity was thick enough you could almost cut it with a knife. Sweating didn’t do much to cool me down but my jersey must’ve held a couple of quarts of moisture by the end of the ride.

A couple of times I felt a few rain drops but they or me moved out of range.

While biking south on Pinehurst Trail I passed a house at one of the side streets with the large message letters in the front yard. The message: “Happy 65th Anniversary, Mom & Dad”. How nice that they were remembered.

On the return leg to Kingwood the streets were damp from rain before I got there but I still avoided the rain. Finished bicycling at 2:53 pm.

Yesterday since I could ride due to rain I lubricated the chain on the Canyon with No. 5 Chain-L oil. Strange name but the oil sticks to the chain. The chain was quiet now after squeaking and showing some rust after riding in the rain on Monday.

Next biking day will be Friday, weather permitting. According to the forecast we should be back to hot and dry June.

After Some Persistence, The Mystery Of The Missing Crosswalk Is Finally Solved

GAIL DELAUGHTER | www.houstonpublicmedia.org

We make a return visit to a challenging intersection where pedestrians had to take the long way around.

In May 2017 we went to check out an unusual situation in northwest Houston, at the intersection where Randon Road and Mangum Road meet West 43rd Street.

A neighbor told us the intersection was missing a crosswalk. That meant you had to walk all the way around just to get to the bus stop on the other side of the street. …

Road linking west side roads set to open after years of delays

by Simon Williams | kfoxtv.com

EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14) — A road linking heavily traveled west side roads is expected to open after years of delay.

Starting Tuesday, drivers will be able to head down Isela Rubalcava from Spur 16 to I-10 Gateway in one continuous span.

That’s a big change as the road used to turn to dirt a quarter mile before reaching Spur 16.

Canutillo Independent School District said that about 6,000 people use the road daily. The connection could speed things along for them.

In addition to connecting Spur 16 to I-10 Gateway, the project includes a four-lane roadway, bicycle lanes, …

Success and Failure Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 18, 2018 by Rick AnkrumJune 18, 2018

Today’s bike ride could be considered a failure or a success depending on how you look at. The failure view comes from not riding the route I planned (Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood) because I turned back at FM 1314 due to rain. This changed the route to “Kingwood – FM1314 – Kingwood” which is part of the success view. Success resulted from earlier today thinking I would not get to ride at all because of the rain in the forecast. I bicycled 18.32 miles when I planned for 0 miles.

I watched the weather and after a very short rain the sky cleared some and the radar showed the rain south of Interstate 10 about 25 miles south and well to the east. Getting ready I pulled of the driveway at 10:58 am thinking my original route was doable. But about 2 miles into the ride I saw dark clouds in the east and then to the south. By the time I got to Loop 494 the rain clouds were in the west as well. I almost turned back then but decided the blue sky peeking through all of the white clouds to the north meant the rain would be there. Wrong! Cycling north on the I-69/US59 service road the closer I got to Porter the rain fell a little harder. I made the u-turn under I-69/US59 at FM 1314 and the rain picked up some when I pulled into the Shipley Donut store and the shelter of their porch. The rain came down and I waited until it slowed down about 25 minutes later.

Still lightly raining I left the porch and headed south on the I-69/US59 service road. The road was wet but no puddles as long as I stayed a couple of feet from the curb. Thinking it might rain harder I thought of possible places for shelter but this wasn’t necessary when I made th next u-turn at Kingwood Drive for the ride through Kings Manor and into Kingwood. The light rain fell all the way to the finish at 12:49 pm. Before putting the Canyon away I hosed off the grit and grim.

I need to lubricate the Canyon’s chain once it dries. I haven’t done that since it arrived 3,058 miles ago.

More rain in the Tuesday forecast and I don’t know if I will bike then. Between the rain and other appointments biking might be spotty until Friday.
