About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

85-year-old adds to cycling titles

By David Lee | www.augustachronicle.com

Frederic Schmid wrapped up his life to this point with a fitting set of words.

“It’s been a ride,” he said.

At 85, the Texan is not slowing down, both in life and on a bike. He travels with his wife, Suzanne, to cycling competitions around the country between mountain biking and road races, and he has two world championships to add to his haul of 29 total titles in various events.

He added his most recent championship jersey Sunday by winning the Men 85+ category in the criterium portion of …

In this clip, we have riders, no, people that are of all ages and abilities. People who love to ride their bikes for various reasons. We do this to make our cycling community visible, that is, we exist and we do ride and we demand that people in cars share the road.

— BiciDude (@robdeleonjr) June 18, 2018

I can’t help but laugh when people say people don’t ride their bikes in the #RGV or the @CityofMcAllen. We do, but not all of us will ride on bike lanes where cars are traveling 50+ mph. I’ll Take Some Gravel With That Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 16, 2018 by Rick AnkrumJune 16, 2018

Today’s bike ride may be the last one until Tuesday or Wednesday as rain is supposed to arrive on Sunday. I chose the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route and biked 31.67 miles to boost the week to 214.77 miles and June to 516.37 miles, 65% of the way to my 800 mile goal. This is the third week in a roll over 200 miles and seven out of the last eight weeks over 200 miles.

With a mid-morning start (9:45 am) I didn’t expect to see other cyclists but I saw 6 other cyclists along the route, most on or south of FM 1960 around Lake Houston.

Weather during the bike ride: start 83 (72% humidity), partly cloudy, wind S 12 mph. Finish 94 (45% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind S 7 mph. The wind made it feel cooler whenever I rode in shade.

While the wind wasn’t too strong I decided to take a rest break at the Huffman Chevron to eat a couple of granola bars and drink ice water. I stayed about 26 minutes before resuming the ride. Riding to the west the tailwind helped me along. While I was resting I thought I saw some dark clouds to the west but by the time I got back on the bike they no longer were there.

Traffic was not too heavy for a Saturday. My wife thought it was a good idea that I rode the Spring Creek Greenway on Friday rather than today because more people might be there today. I hadn’t thought of that.

Not planned for the ride but I rode on gravel (about 6 feet of it) while going north on the greenbelt trail along W. Lake Houston Parkway. Construction on a building along the trail caused them to remove park of the concrete for equipment to get in and the gravel fills in the void until they are finished. The Canyon bike handled it easily.

I finished the bike ride at 12:34 pm, early for my rides.

Sunday and Monday weather forecasts call for rain. If it happens no biking.
