UT students biking through B-CS as part of 4K-mile ride to raise funds for cancer research

Twenty-one University of Texas students will pass through town Monday as part of a 4,000-mile international bike ride designed to raise money for cancer research and treatment.

The Texas 4000 supports three teams of UT students who ride across North America. For 70 days each summer, these nearly 100 total students will cross mountains and deserts on their bikes, raising about $5,000 each for charity.

Hundreds of Central Texas children were at Miller Park last month for a Safe Kids Day.

They had bicycle helmets properly fitted and made their way through a closely guarded obstacle course.

Whats That Dangling By My Nose? Bike Ride

Today’s bike ride got a late start (12:04 pm) due to my working with my church’s men’s group repairing items at two homes. By then the weather had time to heat up which it did. I decided to ride the “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden” route and rode 32.61 miles. This puts the week total at 180.16 miles and June at 67.15 miles, 8% of the way towards the 800 mile goal. It was kind of strange to clean up to go biking.

Weather during the bike ride: start 91 (62% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind S 10 mph. Finish 95 (47% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind S 7 mph.

As I rode along Kingwood Drive near the old HEB building a man riding a trike recumbent came towards me and we pass on the greenbelt trail. I had navigate heavy traffic at two village pools that had swim meets going on, Bear Branch and Kings River. I used to go to those but thankfully my time has passed. As I rode by some people had little rooms setup with fans and other devices to keep cool.

Arriving in Huffman I took a break at the Chevron station even though it was only 18.2 miles into the ride. I ate some Fig Newtons and drank ice water. It was restful sitting in the shade on the Dean Foods milk crate watching the traffic go by. After about 20 minutes I was back on the Canyon heading west.

Riding along FM 1960 I noticed something hanging down from the nose piece of my glasses. Not being near a shady place I waited until one came along on Pinehurst Trail. Removing the glasses I saw that part of the nose piece was torn and dangling which is what caught my attention. When I got home I applied some silicone sealant hoping that would glue the piece back where it belongs but that didn’t work.

Next I tried some Continental rim cement which does not appear to be working either. Maybe Gorilla glue? I will need to buy some. I have a backup pair so I will be wearing them until I figure out a fix.

Finishing the bike ride at 2:46 pm it felt good to be inside with the A/C cool air.

More heat and dry weather on Sunday. I plan on biking to get to 200+ miles for the week.

Cancer Research Encounter in Huffman Bike Ride

Until I met Dennis at the Huffman Chevron today’s bike ride was going to be routine for the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route. As I was getting ready to leave the station I noticed a bike standing behind me and then I spotted Dennis walking towards the doors. He was wearing a bright orange and blue jersey with big letters across the front about a bike challenge. I asked him about the challenge and he told it was for cancer research. He is raising $450 during the month of June. His goal is to bike every day and ride 450 miles during June. He told me his schedule might get in the way but he was going to still attempt. He also told me he is a little short of the fund raising goal.

Dennis lives in Indian Shores, a subdivision north of Huffman on FM 2100. I asked him where he rides and he said today he was going 30+ miles by biking south to Crosby, by the grass farms and then east over Lake Houston and back home. He stopped at the Chevron station to refill his water bottle and get a snack. I wished him success on his biking and goals as he went inside and I got ready to leave. A photo of his bike and if you look closely in the enlarged photo you can see Dennis inside the store.

My bike ride started at 10:27 am (the start time is creeping later) and the weather during the bike ride: start 89 (63% humidity), party cloudy, wind S 9 mph. Finish 95 (47% humidity), partly cloudy, wind S 6 mph. I need to start earlier to avoid some of the heat.

Skirting around a couple of schools early in the bike ride to avoid the final day dismissal traffic was a good idea but I got caught by the Kingwood High School traffic as I waited to cross Kingwood Drive on the way back home at 32.3 miles. School buses were running early too.

My legs out out decent power until I stopped at the Chevron station for a 15 minute break. After the break they just didn’t power the ride like before the break. Over training?? The legs brought me to the end of the bike ride at 1:26 pm but it wasn’t as fast as I preferred with my average speed dropping to 13.6 mph.

Later start on Saturday due to a morning commitment. Weather looks to be a repeat of today. I am still improvising ice cubes for the water bottle to start the bike ride. Last idea: fill the 3 oz. bath cups with water and freeze them. I think they will fit the water bottle opening and the cups are slick enough the ice will not stick.

My goal for June is 800 miles. That doesn’t allow many blank days.
