About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

More Ice Water Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 6, 2018 by Rick AnkrumJune 6, 2018

It’s not quite summer yet but in June when you start a bike ride around noon expect it to be hot. I started today’s bike ride at 11:43 am biking the “New Caney – Gene Campbell Road” route for a total of 38.06 miles pushing June to 199.8 miles. I should’ve ridden another 2/10’s of mile to make it 200 miles. I am at 20% of my June mileage goal after 6 days. Looks my goal is not out of reach.

The weather during the bicycle ride: start 88 (58% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind S 5 mph. Finish 95 (45% humidity), partly cloudy, wind SE 9 mph.

It was hot and dry enough that I used three water bottles stopping twice to refill it. First refill was at the Shell station on FM 1314 just east of Gene Campbell Road. The second one was at the Valero (soon to be a Circle K according to a sign stuck in the ground at one of the entrances) on Northpark Drive at I-69/US59. I made a rest stop before the Valero station in Oakhurst at the pool/park. I was going to continue south on my usual route after the rest break but I wanted to get water and ice for the rest of the ride. Remembering my water and ice at the Shell in Kingwood not tasting good I changed the route to get to the Valero station.

I was hurrying to get back home since my wife wasn’t feeling too well so I tried keep a good pace. I built my average speed up to 14.5 mph by the time I reached the Grand Parkway overpass on FM 1314 and held it there until cycling through Oakhurst and the rest stop there. After that it dropped to 14.4 mph which I maintained until around 34.5 miles into the ride. This was back in Kingwood where riding is slower. When I finished at 2:50 pm it was 14.1 mph.

The refrigerator saga continues with the expected delivery date of June 7th now bumped to June 20th. The impact is manual ice making for our needs especially bike rides and my wife’s ice water consumption will continue for another 2 weeks. I will buy another ice cube tray to up the production, they are only $1.54 at WalMart. Summer is not a time to run out of ice.

More hot weather on Thursday but maybe I can leave earlier.

Kingwood bike shop Tailwind Bicycles keeps cyclists moving

Seven years ago, John Vondra discovered he had a passion for cycling, which led to him opening Tailwind Bicycles of Kingwood on W. Lake Houston Parkway last November.

“A lot of the enjoyment is from the social aspect, meeting people from all walks of life and learning from them,” Vondra said. “It also keeps me in shape, and it’s fun.” …

8 Mile Increments Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 5, 2018 by Rick AnkrumJune 5, 2018

With this month’s goal at 800 miles I am thinking of mileage in 8 mile increments as 1% of the goal. Today’s bike ride was 26.29 miles long which is 3% of the goal which puts me at 20% of my goal with 161.74 miles so far. I biked the “Atascocita – Walden – E. Lake Houston Parkway” route which was shorter than my typical bike ride of 32 miles. I have an afternoon appointment which made my route selection.

Starting at 9:33 am is earlier than usual which meant the weather had not fully blossomed yet. The weather during the bike ride: start 85 (73% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind SW 13 mph. Finish 90 (59% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind 6 mph.

With the shorter time window I tried to keep moving voiding stops if possible. Sometimes the speed wasn’t as high as I would like but I did get my average speed up to 14.2 mph for a while before it settled back to 14.1 and finally 13.9 when I finished the ride at 11:30 am.

I didn’t see any other cyclists along the route. I did see more wind damage from a fallen tree at Pinehurst Trail and FM 1960 to debris in the streets. The tree looked like it might have fallen onto FM 1960 and they cleared enough to open the lane.

More hot weather for Wednesday with a touch of rain possible later in the day. I hope to ride farther.
