About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) – Texas’s largest and most difficult mountain bike race took place around El Paso’s Franklin Mountains this weekend. This year, the 17th annual Puzzler MTB Race attracted over 400 participants from all over the U.S. and Mexico.

Organizers said this year, they wanted to provide more opportunities for beginners.

“This whole year… we’re going to focus on the beginner rides,” said Fernanda Graton, one of the directors for the Borderland Mountain Bike Association (BMBA). “And we saw the results this year.”

Graton said it was a record-breaking year for beginner enrollment. There were multiple races …

2024 Track Race Season Preview

Stuart Gardner, Program Director Greater Houston Cycling Foundation | shoutout.wix.com

While it’s hard to comprehend given the weather right now, the track season is approaching! Included in this email is info on this years race Calendar! Over the next few weeks I will talk about Track Intro Classes, our Lawson Craddock Youth Cycling League, training at Alkek, the Rider of the Year Competition, and the GHCF Race Team/Club. …

… Regional/State Championships

This year Alkek Velodrome will be hosting Regional Championships instead of State Championships. This is because other states nearby don’t have velodromes so riders from them will be eligible to win too! So these are for anyone who resides in Texas or any neighboring state (Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico). Events will take place over 3 weekend with Championship Titles for the following categories: …

Southern Tier El Paso to New Orleans

Day 4:Van Horn to Valentine: Prada, kindness, and the open road Tuesday January 16, 2024, 39 miles (63 km) – Total so far: 167 miles (269 km) Since our bodies aren’t used to Central time, we slept in unintentionally. Then we went to the cafe onsite at Van Horn RV Park for some coffee and breakfast. When we walked in our new friend Jack invited us to sit with him and he’d buy us breakfast. Absolutely not we said

We still chatted over a simple egg breakfast and talked with Dana our server. At the end of the meal, Dana wouldn’t bring us our check insisting it was on the house. So we grabbed Jacks bill and paid that. Grateful to meet both of them.

We hit Highway 90 at 11am with the wind coming from all directions. It was wide open views, a large shoulder, and very little traffic to Valentine. It was also …

Stage 3 Tour de Zwift: Makuri Islands Turf N Surf

Texbiker.net Posted on January 15, 2024 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 15, 2024

My second stage ride in the 2024 Tour de Zwift (missed stage 1). Today’s route for group B: Makuri Islands Turf N Surf route. 15.3 miles and 649 feet of climbing. I rode this route once before on December 12th, 2022. Two climbs after a downhill. first one starts around 9 miles and the taller one starts around 13.5 miles. The last half mile is mostly flat. Weather outside: 27 degrees, cloudy, wind N 16 mph gusts 26 mph. No way I would ride outdoors today.

Until the climbs I stayed with a small group. The climbs separated me from others as I expected. Today’s ride was faster than my previous one on this route. Strava confirmed that: PR on Turf N Surf (51:14). Other Strava results: 3rd fastest time on Alley Sprint (44s) and 3rd fastest time on Pain Cavern Climb (8:01).

Checking ZwiftPower.com I was 422 out of 449 riders in group B. The Zwift group board put me around 710 out of 840.

Racing groups cry foul at $1,200 fee EP Water wants for use of Lost Dog

by Elida S. Perez | elpasomatters.org

A new $1,200 administrative fee that El Paso Water is charging for outdoor racing events at the Lost Dog Trail Head is deterring some groups from wanting to use the open space.

At least two groups, one aiming to organize an outdoor trail running event and another trying to organize a mountain biking event on the land located in Northwest El Paso were told by an El Paso Water employee that they would have to pay a $1,200 administrative fee to get a permit to use the Lost Dog trail for their events.

Concerns over the new fee have …

Southern Tier El Paso to New Orleans

By Cortney O. | www.crazyguyonabike.com

Day 3:Sierra Blanca to Van Horn: A javelina, a move to Central time, and Youtubers Sunday January 14, 2024, 35 miles (56 km) – Total so far: 128 miles (206 km) We talked too long to too many people today. Luckily it was shorter miles and ten miles of downhill. Oh, and more of those lovely tailwinds. So we made it pretty early into Van Horn. Thought, shoot we should have pushed on to Valentine, but then I realized we lost an hour because of the time change.

We talked to Charles, the owner of the Sierra Blanca Lodge for over an hour this morning over coffee. He’s really a great guy, if you can stay at his property, we highly recommend it.

Then we grabbed breakfast burritos at Delfinas in town and as we were about to leave, we chatted with Mike. He is building an off the grid Atlantis and he is a YouTube personality. We talked to him entirely too long so we hit the road after 11. Oh, and we saw a javelina just strolling through town. No biggie.

The ride today was entirely on a frontage road and the last bit on Interstate 10. Not ideal. Really loud. But easy. So we …

Not As Flat As The Route Name Suggested: Zwift Greatest London Flat

Texbiker.net Posted on January 14, 2024 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 14, 2024

15.0 miles, 554 feet elevation gain. Lead-in is .3 miles. Ride the flat roads of the Greater London Loop, then out to Surrey via Deerfield to return to London proper. My last ride on this route was November 27, 2023. The climbing was spread out over the 15 miles with a threat of going up Box Hill that only partially materialized. My legs were grateful.
