About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Bikes everywhere! Dockless bikes up access, sometimes chaos

By: JAMIE STENGLE | www.wpxi.com

DALLAS (AP) – Shared bikes that can be left wherever the rider ends up are helping more people get access to the mode of transportation that reduces car traffic and increases exercise. But they are also producing some chaos – discarded bikes cluttering public spaces, blocking sidewalks and even placed in trees and lakes. …

City will be installing downtown bike lanes

By Trevor Hawes | www.mrt.com

The city of Midland is getting ready to install bicycle lanes downtown, as well as other pedestrian infrastructure improvements, after receiving a half million dollars from the federal government.

The city applied for and received $501,630 from the Federal Highway Administration’s Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside program (TASA). To qualify, the city had to match 20 percent of the funding, totaling $125,408. The total project cost is $627,038. …

PHOTOS: Tour of Corsicana Bike Race

www.corsicanadailysun.com

Many of downtown’s roads were closed off Saturday as hundreds of bikers zoomed down brick streets to compete in Corsicana’s biggest bike race of the year.

The seventh annual Tour of Corsicana was held March 24 and 25 in partnership with the Corsicana & Navarro County Chamber of Commerce.

Sunday was the queen stage of the Tour of Corsicana. Racers battled a grueling 22 mile loop across the Blackland prairies southwest of Corsicana.

Kountze to DeRidder, LA: 84.8 miles, 1034 ft
Sunday March 25, 2018, 85 miles (137 km) – Total so far: 1,853 miles (2,982 km)
Cloudy and humid as we left Kountze for our last day of riding in TX. Once again, a variety of roads, narrow two-lane straight roads, country, back roads , with loose dogs, though no damage, and a four lane road with a nice wide 8 foot shoulder.
We road almost 85 miles and climbed about 1000 ft and everybody was in by 2:45. …

Stephenville, TX to the other side of the street: Meditation, healing, and rerouting

“Rest and self-care are so important. When you take time to replenish your spirit, it allows you to serve others from the overflow. You cannot serve yourself from an empty vessel.” – Eleanor Brownn
Well, we’ve only been on the road for 4 days and already are taking an off day! The headwinds and constant pushing on the pedals really did a number on Don. He has some numbness and tingling on one foot so we decided to give it a day of rest to hopefully recover.

It also helped that we awoke to low hanging clouds – you could barely see across the road! That would not have been safe riding conditions. The wind had also shifted again and once more from the south. Oh joy, another headwind! …

Teacher disallows bike/car-free option in “plan your future” assignmnt

MichaelBluejay | bicycleaustin.info

My daughter (senior in high school) has an assignment in which she’s supposed to make a budget as though she were living alone and had to pay all her own expenses. The students weren’t allowed to plan to bike and be car-free, because (according to my daughter), the teacher said, “You might get a flat tire when you’re …

Short Sleeves With Wind Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on March 25, 2018 by Rick AnkrumMarch 25, 2018

Wrapping up the week I rode the “Oakhurst – Valley Ranch” route for a total of 25.9 miles. The weather was good: start 82 (72% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind S 10 mph gusts 18 mph. Finish 84 (67% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind S 16 mph gusts 22 mph.. The wind speeds was high but biking among trees and houses held it back at times.

In Okahurst I followed another cyclist for about a mile until he went straight and I turned left to enter Briar Tree. I tried to catch up and got closer for a short time but then he pulled away.

Today was a short sleeve jersey day with sunscreen.

For the week I biked 235.51 miles boosting March to 738.27 miles.

More favorable biking weather in the forecast for Monday.

Day 21 – March 23 Friday – Rest day and visit to Big Bend National Park: Plus some added drama
Wednesday February 28, 2018
Last night turned out to me much more eventful than I thought when I finished the journal. I’ll get to that, but first Big Bend National Park. I wasn’t sure I’d go. A lot of people weren’t, and it was going to be a long day. Still, I’d probably never be out here again, so I went. It was a long day. We left at 8:00 and didn’t get back till around 6:00. Bubba rented a few passenger vans to supplement his fleet. We all had plenty of room. Which was great because I had a whole bench seat to stretch out and sleep on.
The park was terrific. I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves. I have about a hundred more. There were so many beautiful views. I’d get kicked off this site if I tried to upload all the ones I think are good, so I just picked a few to give you the flavor. I was surprised at how many people were at the park. Some were …

Day 40:El Paso-San Eliziario
Friday March 23, 2018, 23 miles (37 km) – Total so far: 997 miles (1,605 km)
Friday in El Paso started pretty quiet. I said goodbye to Enrique around 6am, then persisted to sleep for an additional 3 hours. We shared a bathroom with the adjacent suite, so I had to wait for an opening to use the facilities. I checked out around 10:30 and headed to a local cafe/bike shop: Podium Finish. This place was really unique, it has a full espresso bar, as well as healthy breakfast/lunch options. Oh yeah, it’s a bike shop too. My kickstand broke off awkwardly and …

California to Florida – across the USA

By Julian McCarthy | www.crazyguyonabike.com

Day 26 – Del Rio TX to Camp Wood TX: relaxing day (for me!)
Saturday March 24, 2018
A fairly leisurely start, particularly for me. Peter and Poppy headed off, and I went to the car rental place to pick up my car. Sitting outside was Kris from Vermont who was attempting New Mexico to Florida at 160-190km per day, but feeling unwell so resorting to a car instead. He had a very lightweight bike-packing setup which put our rigs to shame. All the best mate!
I then spent a bewildering half hour in Walmart, about six times the size of a UK hypermarket, buying doughnuts for the team, and some cheap extra clothes, along with lunch.

The journey to Camp Wood was mildly undulating (from the inside of a car!) and …

Mineral Wells, TX to Stephenville, TX: Putting the fun back in a bicycle tour!
Saturday March 24, 2018, 48 miles (77 km) – Total so far: 165 miles (266 km)
“Come live with me and be my love, and we all the pleasures prove. That valleys, groves, hills and fields, woods or sleepy mountain yields.” – Christopher Marlowe
We slept in this morning – I guess we both needed the extra rest as I never heard the alarm, so we didn’t get an early start on our ride. After some research into several possible destinations for tonight, we opted to continue south on Hwy. 281 to Stephenville. Mainly because we had a tailwind – if you can believe it!!!

It would have been nicer taking some quieter back roads to a camping spot in Granbury, but that would have required some winding around on possibly steeper roads than the state highway – you never know what they will do in the Hill Country. …

Navasota to Cleveland: 74.2 miles, 2062 ft
Friday March 23, 2018, 74 miles (119 km) – Total so far: 1,768 miles (2,845 km)
Leaving Navasota, we passed a huge high school football complex, with a sign of the back of the scoreboard, “Where Champions Live”. Football is BIG in Texas.
Our travels today took us across Lake Conroe and through the small towns of Willis and Cut and Shoot. Seriously, I can’t make this up.
Lunch was in front of the Montgomery County Library. This group really puts down the food. Staying well nourished to continue on with our travels. …

Cleveland to Kountze: 54.1 miles, 557 ft
Saturday March 24, 2018
A later start today and an easier ride. 54 miles and very little change in elevation. The road was straight and in good shape, though shoulders were a little narrow. We crossed over the Trinity River and could see how the storm changed the riverbanks. Forests were thick and dense, kind of reminding me of the forests in NC. …

Take a look at that ride profile today. We had a 30 mile downhill. Not real steep. You needed to pedal, but a little effort gave you 20 MPH. It was fun. So was lunch at the Ranch House. Waitress with open carry sidearms. Are we in Texas or what?

Coast to Coast With Bubba

By Bobby Rone | www.crazyguyonabike.comDay 22 – Marathon, TX to Sanderson, TX: Easy day

Saturday March 24, 2018, 57 miles (92 km) – Total so far: 1,189 miles (1,913 km)
Left out at 0800 in 50 degree weather. Arrived at 1145 at 85 degrees. Today was a fast, easy ride down US 90 and following the Southern Pacific rail line. The terrain was a gentle down slope, and we had a mild quartering tail wind most of the day. Good roads, down slope, tail wind, no traffic = very nice ride! The scenery is much the same as it has been – mesas, hills, mountains – upland dry grassland.
The highlight of the day was arriving in Sanderson and having lunch at the Ranch House Restaurant. I think it is the only restaurant in Sanderson, but very good. The …

Stradalli Sold But Memories Remain Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on March 24, 2018 by Rick AnkrumMarch 24, 2018

I rode the “Atascocita South – Walden – Huffman” route today for a little variety. Left at 12:13 pm and finished at 2:47 pm. This route was 34.58 miles long.

The weather: start 77 (79% humidity), overcast, wind S 7 mph, gusts 18 mph. Finish 81 (71% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind S 11 mph, gusts 18 mph. Wind is a fact of life this time in March. My legs sure get a workout trying to pedal into the headwind. I can tell when the route gets behind a windbreak. The hardest spots are out in the open without anything to disrupt the wind like riding across Lake Houston on FM 1960. My wardrobe: shorts, long and short sleeve jerseys. The strong wind influenced the long sleeve jersey choice in case the wind was chilly.

No other cyclists along the route but I did see a couple of cars pass me with bikes on racks so maybe they rode somewhere else and drove back home.

Some mileage stats: 209.6 miles this week, 712.36 miles March to date, 1546.67 miles year to date. It is reasonable to reach 800+ miles in March. Last March I biked 676 .83 miles so I am ahead of that now. Over the last four weeks 3 have totaled 200+ miles. After the tough February weather March has been more bike ride friendly.

Sunday weather should be a repeat of today. I plan on biking but less miles.

Yesterday I sold my Stradalli Red Pro 14 bike. With the Canyon Endurace CF SLX my main bike since it arrive 2/26/18 it was time to let some else enjoy the Stradalli. Craigslist.org lead 3 people to express interest in the Stradalli.
