About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Border Bike Trip, Day 18: In the World of Bicycle Tourism

By Grant Wishard | www.weeklystandard.com

After a whirlwind visit to Casas Grandes and Colonia Juarez on the Mexican side I crossed back into El Paso late Friday night to pick up my bike from the mechanic. I still had a few hours of daylight, so I set off immediately for Clint, Texas, a small farming town 20 miles outside El Paso. It was nerve-wracking to get back on the bike, five weeks after I fractured my elbow. Wounded stallions such as myself rarely make it off the racetrack, much less back to the starting gate for a second attempt. …

Day 26 – March 28 Wednesday – Rio Frio TX: Rest Day
Monday March 5, 2018
I’m better today, after feeling really crabby yesterday. There is very little to do here, and nowhere to go, so everyone slept in, had breakfast and is now piddling around and/or napping. We were all beat yesterday. We had some rain overnight, but the worst of the thunderstorms were off to the east. The forecast promises to be good for the next few days which will help.

We are staying in a four bed cabin. I’m bunking with …

“The way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain.” – Dolly Parton
You know you’re officially in the South when the hotel is serving grits for breakfast and puts out a carafe of sweet tea next to the coffee pots!

It was a cold, gloomy morning when we exited the hotel today. The worst of the storms had moved on and it looked like we would have a mostly dry ride.

We turned east on Hwy 36 toward Temple. The pavement was …

Captain’s Blog – 3/28/18 – SAG volunteers needed

by danitza | cycling.powweb.com

It happens to the best of us. You sign up to ride 30+miles on your first practice ride and reality reminds you that you have not ridden in a long time. You are starting to wonder what to do if your legs decide to quit on you, suddenly, you hear what sounds like music to your ears: “Are you doing OK?” It is the friendly SAG volunteer…God’s sent answer to prayer! It was 2015 for me, and I still remember the wonderful feeling of knowing that they were checking on me. That reassurance …

Day 44: Marfa-Marathon
Tuesday March 27, 2018, 57 miles (92 km) – Total so far: 1,234 miles (1,986 km)
Wind can be the most demoralizing thing on a fully loaded bike.
I woke up today feeling pretty good for a camping night’s rest. I did wake up twice at night, once to pee and once just because. The quality of sleep is increasing, but my legs still don’t quite have enough room to spread out to feel all that comfortable at night. I love my mummy bag, keeps me super warm, but the positions I can sleep in are quite limited. I’m excited for some warmer weather where I don’t need to zip it up all the way.

Anywho, I woke up at first light and beelined for the “lobby” at El Cosmico. They had …

California to Florida – across the USA

By Julian McCarthy | www.crazyguyonabike.com

Accommodation summary: This may be of help to others travelling the Southern Tier

… Day 16 & 17 El Paso – Gardner Hotel. http://www.gardnerhotel.com/home-us/ Also a hostel. Excellent choice and very central in old downtown. $30 for dorm bed but we took a triple at $90. Kitchen and lounge.

Day 18 Fort Hancock community church. By the High School. We got lucky and called Jerry on 915 525 1997. He arranged to unlock the church and we slept indoors with hot water, restrooms, kitchen (no shower). If you have to stay outside there is a tap on the second building back towards the main street (either library or technology centre, can’t remember.). Also power socket in a couple of places. You can camp there if not able to get indoors. We left a donation. Dinner and breakfast at Angie’s diner by freeway. Also the Catholic Church we spoke to on the phone, and although they were away also said we could camp out back (concrete and with a tap) http://www.elpasodiocese.org/santa-teresa-fort-hancock.html

Day 19 Van Horn Desert Willow RV – cheap, good showers. I think we paid $20 for 5 of us. Gravel and hard ground https://www.facebook.com/DesertWillowRV/

Joe’s Southern Tier Adventure

By Joe Athas | www.crazyguyonabike.com

Day 42: Sierra Blanca-Van horn
Sunday March 25, 2018, 35 miles (56 km) – Total so far: 1,103 miles (1,775 km)
Today I woke up at dawn in the park on my picnic table. Not a whole lot happened…
Had coffee at the Subway/gas station, bought a few rations, met a young lady named Christie who was very intrigued in my bike/gear. She is an avid backpacker and really liked the idea of bike touring.
I left for Van Horn, felt kinda icky, so I stopped for a …

Day 43: Van Horn-Marfa
Monday March 26, 2018, 74 miles (119 km) – Total so far: 1,177 miles (1,894 km)
Today I sacked in a bit, around 9 am. Of course the time zone change means the sun rises around 7:45 now. I went to the local grocery store and bought 3 bananas for $.76. I set off right away, the weather was perfect for cycling; overcast and 68ish degrees (with tailwinds all day). I made decent progress during the morning and put on 40 miles to Valentine. I had lunch at the Catholic Church steps which also had a water spicket out front. The menu was leftover salad from …

Houston Bike Share is a non-profit organization best known for operating Houston BCycle.

Early Spring on the Southern Tier

By Peter Gillott, Julian McCarthy and Poppy Holmes | www.crazyguyonabike.com

Day 18: El Paso to Fort Hancock
Friday March 16, 2018, 54 miles (87 km) – Total so far: 990 miles (1,593 km)
A pretty quiet day really except for the start. I was trying to make some scrambled eggs but had a self flipping pan so half of it ended up on the floor. It took 2 espressos for mental equilibrium to be restored. After that we set off for 15 miles of flat El Paso suburbs, much nicer than the hilly entrance we had had, then just pedalling through more pecan plantations. Weather was nicely overcast, so not too hot. We arrived at …

Day 19:Fort Hancock to Van Horn, Texas: 🎼Big wheel keep on turning🎼
Saturday March 17, 2018, 72 miles (116 km) – Total so far: 1,062 miles (1,709 km)
Stayed last night in The Community Church. Angie’s Cafe nearby so we headed there for breakfast. I had the huevos rancheros, something I’ve been wanting to try since arriving in Tex-Mex country. Eeeugh! Never again. ( I thought mine were great, eggs covered in salsa and melted cheese with retried beans, poppy) …

Day 20: Van Horn TX to Marfa TX: uphill all day and windy, mostly in our favour
Sunday March 18, 2018, 76 miles (122 km) – Total so far: 1,138 miles (1,831 km)
A pretty poor night’s sleep with strong winds whipping the tents, a bit of rain, and the noise every half hour of a train going through a couple of hundred metres away and for some reason sounding a horn 50 times which quite genuinely must be audible a couple of miles away.

I eventually got up at 0545 and packed up fast, planning to join Kathy and Dave for an early start. However both my Garmin watch and my phone had cleverly reset themselves for Mountain Time (at least 10 miles away) so in fact it was 0645 and I had to rush to not delay the others too much.

A very poor breakfast at Wendy’s and off onto a …

Day 21:Marfa to Marathon
Monday March 19, 2018, 56 miles (90 km) – Total so far: 1,194 miles (1,922 km)
Woke up in bright light ,in a large comfortable bed in a warm motel, Riata on edge of town, great to stretch out and not confined to …

Day 22:Marathon to Sanderson: 🎼Deep in the heart of Texas🎼
Tuesday March 20, 2018, 55 miles (89 km) – Total so far: 1,249 miles (2,010 km)
It was a bitterly cold night at the campsite in Marathon, a nice campsite but with little shelter from the cold wind. Poppy had bought a bag of ice to keep the milk cold and had left it on the deck on which I had pitched my tent. In the morning it was frozen to the deck!

But oh the stars! I was awoken by a train at about 1:00am and got up to visit the loo, as a gentleman of advanced years is disposed to do, and as I crossed the campsite I had to stop and gaze in awe at what must be the greatest show on earth. With absolutely no light pollution or cloud cover, I have surely never seen such a sight.

I got up early as I was so …

Day 24:Seminole State Park to Del Rio, Texas
Thursday March 22, 2018, 42 miles (68 km) – Total so far: 1,374 miles (2,211 km)
After the long hard slog to Seminole State Park and surviving th3 winds overnight it was gteat to get a sleep 8n till 8:15. Ian had filled out the registration slip for the camping fee $15 fo4 th3 site but had omitted the park entry fee of $5 each. He was already packed and away to Del Rio by the time I surfaced, thought I would go and sign Peter and myself up for the 10am tour of the canyon and rock art only to be met by a …

Day 27: Campwood to Lost maples State Park.
Sunday March 25, 2018, 41 miles (66 km) – Total so far: 1,496 miles (2,408 km)
After a very nice campground 3 sisters at Campwood we set of on the short 40 miles but hilly ride for today, the profile showed 4 steep climbs and they were pretty brutal, only 1.25 – 1.5 miles long but steep, speed down below 4mph/6kpm. The fourth hill did not materialise, we turned of into state park before the hill started so we have that first thing tomorrow. at the halfway point at …

Day 28 Lost Maples to Kerrville
Monday March 26, 2018, 50 miles (80 km) – Total so far: 1,546 miles (2,488 km)
A grey, overcast morning promised little in the way of sunshine for the morning, and we had reason to be thankful for straight out of the Lost Maples campsite we were faced with a 500 foot climb. Brutal on legs that had not yet warmed up. But we made it, as we always do.

Day 25 – Brackenville, TX to Concan, TX: Rainy day
Tuesday March 27, 2018, 74 miles (119 km) – Total so far: 1,421 miles (2,287 km)
Well, last night I was able to go back several days and post a lot more pictures. Today, I have weak WiFi, but I took no pictures today because it rained all day. …

Hamilton to Gatesville, TX: Racing the rain
Tuesday March 27, 2018, 35 miles (56 km) – Total so far: 244 miles (393 km)
“There was no money in the sport but we’d be out there day in, day out, rain or shine, doing it.”- Linford Christie

We were up before dawn this morning and immediately looked at the weather radar. Last night it looked iffy for any riding today so we were happy to see that it was dry outside and that we would have at least a couple of hours of riding before some scattered showers might hit us.

So we went ahead and packed up the bike, eating a quick breakfast of oatmeal cooked in our microwave. By 7:30 am we were rolling south on Hwy 281, hoping for the best.

As we went along I saw that there was …

Tour of Corsicana: the Time Penalties, the Crash, the… Comeback?

Pedal Prose | www.youtube.com

This is a brief look at the 2018 Tour of Corsicana. Unfortunately, the ability to build out the scripted video and cover the entirety of the races was cut short by a need for medical attention. However, it was still a good experience. The rider who crashed into me even messaged me to apologize, and I thought that showed quite a bit of class.

Dockless bike-share pilot development rolls forward

by Caleb Pritchard | www.austinmonitor.com

More than a year after an aborted attempt to move into Austin without permission, several dockless bike-sharing companies have switched gears and are now patiently working with the Transportation Department as it develops a pilot program that could put the smartphone-activated two-wheelers on city streets by this summer. …

Day 27 – Camp Wood TX to Lost Maples State Park TX
Sunday March 25, 2018
A great night’s sleep without any noise, and with no flysheet on, a lovely view of the moon and the stars. Warm enough to sleep on top of the sleeping bag most of the night too. The Los Rios campground is one of the best yet, and Ryan and his family deserve success.
I had a leisurely breakfast in the communal pavilion with a real coffee (thanks Poppy!) and typed up the summary of the accommodation we have stayed at. We have found it really useful to get tips from cyclists ahead as to where they stayed.

It was only 40 miles to Lost Maples and …

Day 23 – Sanderson, TX to Comstock, TX: Hills and headwinds
Sunday March 25, 2018, 84 miles (135 km) – Total so far: 1,273 miles (2,049 km)
What a difference a day makes! Started out this morning with relatively warm temperatures and an overcast sky. Immediately we started climbing. Then we went down and back up all day long straight down US 90 right into a headwind. The terrain has changed from flat desert surrounded by mountains to many low hills and valleys. Instead of cactus there is an abundance of low trees – mesquite, creosote, etc.
The ride today was hard on everybody because of the distance and bad roads. I think Texas counties compete with each other to see who can spend the least on road maintenance. The pavement of choice seems to be chip seal – a layer of tar covered by …

Day 24 – Comstock, TX to Brackenville, TX: More headwinds – again
Monday March 26, 2018, 74 miles (119 km) – Total so far: 1,347 miles (2,168 km)
The wind was howling all night at camp. This morning, we rode out onto the infamous chip seal road that is US 90 in this part of Texas. We went up and down low hills all day into a head wind. It was pretty much like yesterday. On the route we crossed over part of Amistad Reservoir, a huge impoundment near Del Rio on the Rio Grande. Lunch was in Del Rio where I had a Texas smoked brisket sandwich. That was THE highlight of the day. …

Day 23 – March 25 Sunday – Sanderson TX to Comstock TX: In nothing flat
Friday March 2, 2018, 82 miles (132 km) – Total so far: 1,259 miles (2,026 km)
We were worried about this day. It is a long day with a lot of climbing -2,200 feet. Even worse are the headwinds other years have experienced on this stretch. Two years ago, all but a handful of riders SAGed in, because the wind was too intense. We were ready for the worst, and it was a hard day, but the winds were very light. Of course, the heavy truck traffic, the lousy chipseal, and the hills all took their toll. We were tired enough at the end of a long day, but not totally spent. I expected Texas to be flat. But if you look at the elevation profile, you can see it was nothing but up and down all day. That got old. I miss Florida! …

Day 24 – March 26 Monday – Comstock TX to Ft. Clark Spring TX: I guess we are getting tough
Saturday March 3, 2018, 75 miles (121 km) – Total so far: 1,334 miles (2,147 km)
It was looking bad this morning. Rain moving in, grey skies, and wind! After a long day yesterday, we were pretty grumpy about today’s prospects. The first 20 miles or so didn’t disappoint. So many hills, so much wind, and a misty rain that covered my fairing and made it hard to see. I just put my head down, kept my stops short, and pushed on. I didn’t want to get to camp late again. And I didn’t get in late. I got here around 4:00. Folks kept coming in until 7:30. …

The Limo Bikes to Bayous and Beaches

By Marilyn Swett | www.crazyguyonabike.com

Stephenville to Hamilton, TX: A day in the country
Monday March 26, 2018, 42 miles (68 km) – Total so far: 209 miles (336 km)
“After climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb.” -Nelson Mandela
We did well getting up early this morning and were on the road before 8:00 am under cloudy skies. Our route took us north for a couple of miles before we turned south on FM Rd. 914 – a country back road.

For the first couple of miles we encountered rough milled pavement and a flurry of traffic. When we intersected another road going to Dublin, we lost most of the traffic and gained a smoother surface. There wasn’t much of a shoulder but that didn’t matter a whole lot as traffic was light.

We spent the morning and part of afternoon meandering up, down and …

March Wind Continues Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on March 26, 2018 by Rick AnkrumMarch 26, 2018

The wind will not let up. It was fairly easy pedaling to FM 1485 to the north thanks to the 21 mph SE wind. I chose the “New Caney – Gene Campbell Road” route riding to the north but I first thought of biking to the south. It would have been hard going into the headwind for 19 to 20 miles and then having a tailwind. My legs would have been spent so taking advantage of the tailwind would have been difficult I think. The wind got stronger as the ride progressed and biking SE on FM 1314 required extra energy. Before that turn from Gene Campbell Road onto FM 1314 I built up my average speed to 15.2 mph but as I rode on FM 1314 I could not maintain the speed and it slowly dropped. By the time I finished the bike ride it was 14.3 mph.

The ride started at 12:23 pm and finished at 3:05 pm. I narrowly missed the school traffic in Briar Tree, Kings Manor and Bear Branch.

Weather: start 80 (73% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind SE 21 mph. Finish 83 (66% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind SE 22 mph, gusts 29 mph.

No other cyclists spotted along the route. They were probably staying home out of the wind. In the summer the wind usually drops down and I might want some of this to cool things down some.

While I rode I noticed the Canyon Endurace needed a wash job so when I got home I got out the brush and soap. Here is the Canyon after the wash in the backyard.

The knock out roses are going crazy with blooms.

Probably no biking on Tuesday. Wednesday rain may arrive; we need it. My home weather station says .13″ of rain this month.
