About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Blue Norcross AL to Huffman Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on November 14, 2017 by Rick AnkrumNovember 14, 2017

Yesterday I thought I might not ride today but when I went out to get the newspaper the clear blue sky and warming temperature were too much to not ride. I set out on the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route at 11:36 AM riding the Blue Norcross AL bike for a different feel while biking. The early morning weather got even better by then with the temperature at 75 and the blue sky holding nothing back. Even though the it felt warm I decided to wear the short sleeve and long sleeve jersey combination. This was wise as I rode in the shade a lot during the first 7 or 8 miles. The wind showed as calm but when I was moving this wasn’t the case.

The Blue Norcross AL is different from the Stradalli in several areas: weight, tire width and gearing. Before starting the ride I aired the tires up to 80 psi to help the rolling resistance without making the ride too bumpy. I can tell the weight difference whenever a slight incline comes along but I think this is good to put a different weight load on my legs. It’s like running with ankle weights. When I get back on the Stradalli the weight difference helps me propel the bike faster and the inclines are not so hard.

No rest stop today. The Huffman Chevron will have to wait another day for me to visit.

More great weather until Sunday which should allow me to get closer to my November mileage goal. How I stand after today’s bike ride:

  • 70 miles so far this week
  • 283 miles for the month; 77 miles from my 360 mile goal
  • 7,103 miles YTD; 327 miles from my 7,430 mile goal

City poised to open streets to ‘dockless’ bike sharing

By Dug Begley | www.houstonchronicle.com

A rainbow of bicycles likely is coming to Houston sidewalks soon, so long as the yellow, green, orange and gray bikes do not get blacklisted by a skeptical City Council.

Houston officials are poised to open the city to at least six dockless bike-sharing companies that will distribute the readily-available cycles throughout the 11 council districts – something council members stressed is a …

Train, Warm Weather Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on November 13, 2017 by Rick AnkrumNovember 13, 2017

Before starting today’s bike ride I saw some comments on Nextdoor.com about Northpark Drive and a train stopped. I wasn’t sure I should bike the route I planned but I decided to go ahead and ride the “New Caney – Gene Campbell Road” route. When I got to the railroad crossing on Knox Road the train was gone so no problem. Later when I returned to Kings Manor no sign of any train mishap there.

After running a couple of errands I got started on the ride at 11:10 AM. The temperature was 75 with some sunshine. I almost opted for a short sleeve jersey only but sanity prevailed and I wore a long sleeve one and a short sleeve jersey. As long as I was in the sun I was just right but riding in the shade I was glad I wore the long sleeves.

After not biking on Sunday my legs were rested and I set a solid pace. The NE 6 mph wind wasn’t an issue either. I slowly built my overall aver speed up to 15.4 mph and held it there for several miles starting on Gene Campbell Blvd., FM 1314 and the side streets. Average watts got up to 109 but settled at 103 by the end of the ride.

With the cooler weather I didn’t stop to refill my water bottle and the ice water was still cold at the 1:44 Pm finish.

Mileage standings after today’s ride:

  • 250 miles in November, goal is 360 miles
  • 7,070 miles YTD, goal is 7,430 miles

More warm weather this week and I plan on taking advantage and ride.
