About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

A Touch of Fall Bicycle Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 29, 2017 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 29, 2017

It felt like fall during the bike ride today. Although the temperature was 83 (70% humidity) when i started at 10:50 AM the NE 8 mph breeze had a coolness to it. Bicycling along the “New Caney – Roman Forest – Valley Ranch” route to the north the wind required extra effort to maintain a 17 to 19 mph speed. The sky was almost blue with some very thin clouds scattered around causing the weather station to call it mostly clear. The bike ride went 41.0 miles increasing the YTD to 6,052 miles and the month to 772 miles. With one riding day left this month I should reach 800+ miles for the third month this year.

Feeling good with the nice weather I rode with strong legs getting the overall average speed up to 14.6 mph and holding it there for a number of miles.

Biking through Roman Forest is a pleasant experience with light traffic and smooth streets though on Appian Way there is a section about 100 feet long where the road is full of potholes. I am not sure why this one section is so beat up. The other two lanes going the opposite direction do not have this problem. The school buses leaving nearby Dogwood Elementary School must rock and roll driving over this section.

Stopping at the Stripes station on FM 1314 and Valley Ranch Parkway I refilled my water bottle, grabbed a Greensheet and another advertisement newspaper and headed to the shade by the pumps. Looking through one of the papers the number of portable buildings for sale struck me by surprise. I didn’t know there was such a market for them. I ate two fruit and grain cereal bars and drank some ice water while resting for about 25 minute. I talked with the Stripes attendant who was emptying the trash containers when he came to the ones near me.

Leaving Stripes I enjoyed the mostly tailwind through Briar Tree, Oakhurst and Kingwood Place before heading east to Kings Manor and then into Kingwood. Riding east the wind wasn’t as friendly. I passed all of the schools before the dismissal traffic arrived finishing the bike ride at 2:14 PM. By then the temperature was 90 (humidity 60%) which felt more like summer.

I think I will start earlier than usual on tomorrow’s bike ride to catch the Bike Barn crowd. The weather should be much like today but the early morning version.

by Rick Diaz | www.krgv.com

WESLACO – Memorials placed at the sites of tragedies along streets are becoming a tradition in the Rio Grande Valley.
It’s a family’s last tribute to a loved one who died in a horrible accident.
The Texas Department of Transportation can authorize the memorials if a family member of the victim files a request.
“The Texas Department of Transportation will authorize memorial markers to be placed near the right of way,” TxDOT spokesperson Octavio Saenz said. “These markers do serve a great purpose, not only to memorialize the individual that was a victim of a …

EB Training Ride – Sunday, Oct 1 – Going the distance

Austin Bike | www.bikemojo.com

PLEASE NOTE, THIS IS A TRAINING RIDE, NOT A PRE-RIDE.
Pre-rides are to learn the trails, we have held one for each trail so far. This is a training ride to get people used to long mountain bike rides, because completing the EB is not as much about knowing the trails as it is being able to sit in the saddle for 10+ hours.
This ride will be at a moderate pace, we will occasionally stop and regroup, but they will be short regroups every few miles, not the more frequent ones from pre-rides. Everyone will be expected to keep up or self-drop.
Pack enough nutrition and water for the route, there is only one place to stop (at the bottom of Jester, 40+ miles in). Please make sure someone knows you will be out and can pick you up if things go sideways for you.
Here is the plan: …

Goal Busting Bicycle Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 27, 2017 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 27, 2017

I made the goal! Bicycling the “New Caney – Gene Campbell Road” route I rode 36.1 miles boosting my YTD to 6011 miles. This sets me up for my next goal of 7000 miles by the end of the year. October will be the month to ride the most miles with November and December trailing off as the weather and daylight move into winter. For September I am at 732 miles exceeding my 700 mile goal. With two more potential bicycling days left I can increase that.

Rolling out at 10:56 AM my legs felt good. The NE wind at 6 mph was not enough to be a problem and I improved the average speed all the way to when it hit 15.1 mph where I maintained it until I hit 32 miles entering Kingwood. The mostly cloudy sky kept the temperature in lower with 83 (80% humidity) at the start moving up to 89 (68% humidity) when I finished at 2:04 PM.

At 24.4 miles I stopped at the Valero station on FM 1314 and Sorters Road for a break. They were out of 32 oz. cups so I got a 44 oz one but didn’t fill it all the way to the top, $.79 for any size makes this an easy decision. I sat outside in the shade drinking the orange Gatorade while eating the two fruit and grain bars I brought. I stayed about 30 minutes, a little longer than I planned because I returned a phone call.

I tried something different with my cell phone. My Nexus 6P phone has a battery problem where it shuts down when the battery status shows anywhere from 40% to 25% without any warning. My spare phone is a Moto G4 using a Project Fi data SIM while the Nexus 6P uses a Project Fi regular cell SIM. I paired the Moto G4 with the Elemnt computer and everything works the same. Phones calls on the Moto G4 use the data network instead of the cell network. I have a replacement phone on order but it will not arrive for a week or more so I will use the Moto G4 until it arrives. Very smooth transition.

No biking tomorrow but should be back on Friday.
