About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Why are some Austin sidewalks red?

KUT 90.5 | By Nathan Bernier | www.kut.org

Red sidewalks are popping up around Austin. The unexpected splash of color has been catching eyes and raising curiosity. Why do sidewalks sometimes suddenly shift shades?

The mystery prompted North Austin resident Dale Ritzen to write into KUT’s ATXplained project, where we answer your questions about Austin’s people, places and culture.

“We kind of were curious,” Ritzen said. “We noticed them … at Allandale and Burnet Road, and also driving along Airport [Boulevard] near the Lamar [Boulevard] intersection.” …

One dangerous Dallas street will get a ‘road diet’ with federal funds

By Scott Friedman and Eva Parks | www.nbcdfw.com

Federal funds are on the way to help the city of Dallas address safety problems on one of the city’s most dangerous streets for pedestrians.

On Wednesday, The White House and the U.S. Department of Transportation announced a federal infrastructure grant of more than $21 million for improvements on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and a portion of the road where it becomes Cedar Crest Blvd.

The city plans to reshape the street stretching from Fair Park to the west of Interstate 45 by reducing the number of traffic lanes from five to four and using the extra space to carve out safer spaces for pedestrians and cyclists. …

Holiday season brings an uptick in pedestrian, cyclist deaths, Harris County officials say

Patricia Ortiz | www.houstonpublicmedia.org

The Harris County District Attorney’s office reminded residents that a law passed two years ago that could charge drivers with felonies charges if they injure or kill someone in a crosswalk.

Local officials say they’re seeing an uptick in pedestrian and cyclist deaths, which often occurs during the holiday season.

There have been a total of 60 pedestrian deaths related to auto-pedestrian collisions in the city this year, according to the Houston Police Department. Houston Police Chief Troy Finner said there were 53 auto-pedestrian-related deaths last year, and 48 auto-pedestrian deaths in 2021.

"The number of auto-pedestrian fatalities keeps increasing year after year, this is a …

From Zwift To Real, Biking Atascocita – Walden

Texbiker.net Posted on December 14, 2023 by Rick AnkrumDecember 14, 2023

I switched from three days of Zwift biking to real world riding today. I messed around until 2:13 PM when I started today’s bike ride. By then the temperature was around 71 degrees and sunny. Because of the late start I decided to ride the Atascocita – Walden route not crossing Lake Houston to Huffman. It was just over a year ago the last time I rode this route on December 6th, 2022. So far today’s 21.44 miles is the longest ride this week. I rode my Canyon Endurace CF 7 bike. The wind was light allowing me to wear shorts, a long sleeve jersey, and a short sleeve jersey. Once I warmed up I was comfortable. My legs were good getting my overall average speed up to 14.0 mph. I finished at 3:49 PM. Surprisingly I saw two other cyclists.

3+ Laps Zwift Makuri Islands Sleepless City Route

Texbiker.net Posted on December 13, 2023 by Rick AnkrumDecember 13, 2023

Back to the Zwift Makuri Islands for 3 laps of the Sleepless city route. It has been a long time since I rode last January 16th, 2022 and once before that. A lap is a little less than 6 miles plus a .1 mile lead in for the first lap. After 3 laps I made some random turns to see what was there. Each lap climbed 140 feet in elevation, not too much for me. My random turns added 75 feet in 2.2 miles. Outside the weather was cloudy and 54 degrees. Below my 60 degree threshold. Moved to level 32 in Zwift and set 2 PR on the Castle Park Sprint. Unlocked the Newsy Cap. I didn’t look at the upcoming events. Still no free rides in Scotland without creating a meetup.
