About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Visit With Chris During the Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 20, 2017 by Rick AnkrumJuly 20, 2017

Today’s bike ride followed the “Atascocita South – Walden – Huffman” route though I made a slight change in Atascocita South where I stayed on Atasca S Drive instead of turning right onto Lonesome Woods Trail. I wondered how Atasca S Drive would connect to Long Trace Drive, the street I usually ride on. Changing the Elemnt computer to the map screen I saw when the streets turned and made my way to Long Trace Drive. This is the first time I used the map function on the Elemnt to navigate. With the slight route modification I biked 33.8 miles. This put less than 200 miles to reach the 800 mile goal for July.

Earlier while I was biking through Bear Branch Village in Kingwood I passed another cyclist and we exchanged waves. I think I saw him on other rides.

I managed to start riding at 10:27 and finished at 1:25. I took a rest stop at 12:05 pm at the 21.9 mile mark pulling into the Huffman Chevron. The 5 mph south breeze tried to cool me off and dry up some of the sweat while I stayed in the shade during the 25 minute stop. I refilled my water bottle twice while I was there and ate a Clif bar for energy to finish the ride.

Back on the road I continued west on FM 1960 to Pinehurst Trail and turned to the north. As I made my way north another cyclist pulled beside me and it was Chris who I know from the Houston Jeep People Meetup group and organized rides where our paths crossed. We rode together until he turned back to Atascocita at Kingwood Greens Drive and W. Lake Houston Parkway. It was great to chat and catch up. From there I rode to the finish.

Weather for today’s bike ride: partly cloudy sky, 91 to 97 degrees with 55% humidity. Typical July. More of the same tomorrow.

Five reasons to ride in Austin

by Leslie Kehmeier | dirtragmag.com

mountian bike biking
Austin, Texas? For mountain biking? The capital of the Lone Star State isn’t usually on the radar when it comes to destinations worthy of riding. However, when you think about the food, the vibe and the Hill Country terrain, it totally makes sense. Here are five reasons that Austin should be your next mountain bike trip.
#1) The Food
Tacos, barbecue, pizza, grilled cheese and kimchi fries. No matter what your heart desires, Austin is ready to serve up something to satisfy any craving, anywhere in the city. While a good chunk of the …

Oakhurst – Valley Ranch Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 19, 2017 by Rick AnkrumJuly 19, 2017

I like it when a plan comes together. I got to start somewhat earlier (9:46 am) and rode 27.1 miles on the “Oakhurst – Valley Ranch” route. I chose the Blue Norcross AL to ride to compensate for the shorter route by riding a heavier bike. The weather didn’t have a chance to reach full strength at the start but by the 11:52 finish it was 93 degrees and the sweat was rolling freely from my body. The partly cloudy sky and 4 mph west breeze made for nice weather to bike in.

Lots of construction along this route. Mainly homes and new streets for more new homes.

With today’s bike ride I need 230 miles to reach my July 800 mile goal and for the week I am at 111 miles.

At the start of the ride I caught up with a lady cyclist on Woodbridge Drive and said hello when I passed her just before turning left. Later I saw her again on Tree Lane.

Tomorrow’s weather looks to be a repeat and I plan on riding to the south.
