About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Mellow Temperature Blue Norcross AL Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 16, 2017 by Rick AnkrumJuly 16, 2017

Nothing out of the ordinary on today’s bike ride. Even the temperature mellowed out a few degrees coming in at 90 when I finished the ride at 1:55 pm. Biking 23.1 miles along the “Atascocita – Walden” route pushed the week’s total to 208.79 miles which got me to what I was shooting for. For July I am at 459 miles versus the 800 mile goal. With 15 potential biking days left I think the goal is doable and could exceed it. I biked 6 days out of 7 this week.

I rode my Blue Norcross AL bike which requires more effort than the Stradalli due to weight and slightly different gearing. Airing the tires to 60 psi before starting at 12:08 reduced the effort some and I could feel the difference whenever I rode over a bump in the pavement. No PowerPod readings with the Blue Norcross AL bike since I don’t have a mount installed.

Part of the route I rode the reverse direction along Kings River Drive, Atascocita Shores Drive and into Walden. No other cyclists spotted along the route.

More good biking weather on tap for Monday and with the TdF rest day I can start early.

Back in the saddle; A log of my 2017 bicycle races so far

By David Talley | www.wcmessenger.com

I wrote a column in January about plans to revisit bicycle racing this year after barely pedaling anywhere in 2016.
I raced a variety of events in college, hitting the road almost every weekend of both semesters to travel around the state for cycling events. But since then I’ve been off my bike more than in the saddle. Last year was the culmination of this, with only one race on the books last July.
But I wanted to make this year different. Despite not riding much, I’ve always loved reading race reports and cycling coverage. Reading other racers’ blogs is partly what inspired me to jump back on the bike, so I pledged to double from 2016 the number of days I spent …

National Bike Challenge Surprise Ranking Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 15, 2017 by Rick AnkrumJuly 15, 2017

The bike left home at 9:14 am, not quite as early as I wanted but not too bad. The route selected followed the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” streets and roads. The weather was warm with 86 degrees though it didn’t feel that hot at first while I rode the shady streets before getting to more open roads. I ended up biking 32.3 miles moving me to 185 miles for the week, within reach of getting 200 miles with a Sunday bike ride.

The Stradalli continues to ride silently thanks to the valve stem nuts installed earlier this week. Now if I can solve the new brake pads screeching against the carbon fiber rims!

It didn’t take long to spot other cyclists. At the Kings River Drive and W. lake Houston Parkway traffic light a group of 10 or so were stopped when I rode through the intersection on W. Lake Houston Parkway. I didn’t way because they probably couldn’t see me due to the esplanade shrubbery. Later along the route I would see more cyclists probably bringing the total to 30 plus. The last three cyclists I saw briefly as they zoomed by me was on Atascocita Shores Drive just before it turns into Kings River Dr. They were on their aero bars pedaling strong. I heard the wheels spinning in the air just before I realized they were on my left. This reminded me of a conversation during the post stage interview on NBC Sports Network after Marcel Kittel won the stage sprint. The question was how many watts Marcel generated in the sprint and the QuickStep manager paused and then said around 2100 watts. He said this was because of Marcel’s physical size and then said that Mark Cavendish generates around 1450 watts but has a different body type. This makes my watts pale in comparison but I am also much older than they are.

A quick stop at the Huffman Chevron for ice and water was in order with the heat and humidity. That was at the 20.5 mile point. From there I rode 11+ miles to the end of the ride which I finished at 11:43 am, much earlier than yesterday’s ride. It was 89 at the finish but I think the sun was behind some clouds for a few minutes because it jumped to 92 after I was inside.

The plan is to ride 20+ miles tomorrow (Sunday) reach 200+ for the week.

I got a surprise when I checked the National Bike Challenge dashboard after the ride: number 2 in Houston! This was the first time I saw a Houston ranking.
