About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Late Start, 98 Degrees Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 16, 2017 by Rick AnkrumJune 16, 2017

A late start on today’s bike ride (3:32 pm) and it was hot, 98 degrees. Sometimes plans do not come together. Yesterday was a scheduled rest day and I planned on bicycling today but yesterday when I took my wife to the medical center the treatment center forgot to order one of her drugs so we went back today for the treatment. I wanted to ride 200+ miles this week and if I didn’t ride today it would be very difficult to get that many miles. So after her treatment we stopped at McDonald’s in Kingwood and then I got ready to ride. Usually I am finished riding by now so I selected a route I thought would be 25 miles or more. Today’s route, “Kingwood-Community Drive-Valley Ranch”, turned out to be 27.3 miles long boosting this week to 154.6 miles. The last time I rode this route was 3/28/2012.

Riding through Woodridge Forest in  section under construction I took these pictures. I rode my Blue Norcross AL bike for variety and because the ride was shorter than normal.

6-16-2017 Woodridge Forest-2
6-16-2017 Woodridge Forest-1

The house are along the new streets added in the western end of Woodridge Forest creating the new exit from there. They don’t show up on my Elemnt computer when I look at the map screen. On a ride I need to write the street names down and add them to the maps. One name is Broad Turtle Drive.

Besides being hot the scattered clouds didn’t block out much sun, glad I wore sunscreen. I wore a new Primal Wear jersey, “Bike Print Red”, that I bought on clearance.

I bought two other jerseys and will rotate them into the wear cycle.

If I ride 35 miles tomorrow and 25  miles on Sunday I will reach my 200+ mile goal for the week. Now if that plan comes together June miles will be ahead of schedule for my goal. The weather will be hot and dry; maybe isolated showers.

SAN ANTONIO — Teaching kids to ride a bike isn’t always easy. Most parents we talked to succeeded with their kids around age 5.
But not Rachel Harris. She pulled it off when her son Adrian was just two and a half.

Cleburne celebrates ‘Alex Wilson Night’ after custom bike stolen

Todd Unger | www.wfaa.com

CLEBURNE, TEXAS – Alex Wilson has never used his cerebral palsy as an excuse. It’s one big reason the 24-year-old is a town favorite in Cleburne.
When his custom-made, $3,000 bike was stolen two weeks ago, the community decided to step up in a big way.
At a Cleburne Railroaders baseball game Tuesday night, Alex was presented with close to $4,000 for a new set of wheels he’ll be able to easily navigate to and from work. …

Staring at the Cobalt Blue Jeep Unlimited Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 14, 2017 by Rick AnkrumJune 14, 2017

I bonked on today’s bike ride. The wind took a hefty share of my energy after I exited Roman Forest Blvd. headed south on the I-69/US59 service road. At one point I shifted out my usual 34 x 12 gearing to 34 x 13 to get some relief for my legs. I stopped at the Mobil station in New Caney at FM 1485 and US59 to refill my water bottle with ice and water and lingered there a few minutes to get some energy to continue biking south. Glad I did and making the right hand turn onto Valley Ranch Parkway provided some relief but the left curve put me back against the wind.

The wind was from the south at 13 mph so it wasn’t gale force but to my tired legs it felt like it. When I reached the Stripes station on FM 1314 I had to take a break. I went inside and bought a 32 oz fruit punch PowerAde and slowly walked to the pumps and sat in the shade. The wind I battled now became somewhat of a friend as it cooled and dried up the perspiration. I rested at least 25 minutes slowly drinking the cold PowerAde thinking I should’ve brought some snack crackers or something to eat. Towards the end of my stay I spotted a cobalt blue Jeep Wrangler Unlimited moving slowly on FM 1314 getting ready to pull into Stripes. It had a trailer loaded with 4-wheelers and kayaks but what caught my attention most was the lift, big tires and black sloping rear soft top. I own a Jeep Wrangler Sport 2 door and I love to see modified Jeep Wranglers. I couldn’t help but stare as the driver maneuvered the rig close to the pump to gas up the 4-wheelers. Two teenage boys got out of the rear doors and the driver met them at the pump. Looked like they had a bunch of fun planned or were on the way back from fun.

Tearing myself away I got back on the Stradalli to battle the wind over the remaining 11+ miles to finish the bike ride.

The bike ride started later than I wanted (11:46 am) due to my side gig selling promotional products. I learned how to place electronic purchase orders this morning and had to fix some problems. By then the partly sky allowed the temperature to hit 92 degrees where it stayed for most of the ride.

My tired and exhausted legs got me to the end of the bike ride at 3:16 pm. I was ready for cool A/C and no wind.

Tomorrow is a badly needed rest and recovery day.
